| frustrated with housetraining... yes i know many people have problems with housetraining (and many don't) and i've been reading up in previous posts. Unfortunately i know i can only blame myself for the most part because my husband and i both work crazy hours so consistency isn't so much. anyway, p-nut was doing pretty well with the pads, sometime he would be half and half. well i thought if i got him a litter box then there would be no risk of missing. so we set it up in the same spot where his pads usually are in hopes that would intrigue him to go. he has no problem getting in and out of the box, however he only does this to try and eat the litter and is peeing right next to the box! so a few questions/opinions...1) do you think that putting a pee soaked pad under the litter will help him? 2)also do you think i should put one pad half under the pad or would that be too confusing? 3) how do i get him to stop trying to eat the litter? i don't want to yell at him because i want him to go in the box, ya know sorry for the vent i really want this to work |

| Have you tried just putting a pee ped in the litter box? I know that some people on here have done that so there's no worry about eating the litter.

| I have no experience with "indoor" training a dog, so take this advice with that in mind. First, you are totally right. If your dog is eating the litter, DON'T YELL AT HIM! We made the mistake of telling our pup "no" when he rang the bell to go outside and we knew he had just been out and didn't need to go. It has been about a month since we stopped doing that, and he is just now starting to occasionally ring the bell again when he actually does need to go out. If you are worried about the box scooting and scaring him, maybe you could try a flat cement block in the box and under the pad? You know, the kind you would use to make a small walkway through a yard. I don't know, just an idea. If my pup had litter in a box, I have no doubt he would think of it as his snack box instead of his pee box, lol. Lauren & Nikko |

| Patience and repetition seem to be best for me. I use potty pads and I put him on the pad after every nap or play time and say, "potty". He seems to be getting the hang of it. But it is going to take awhile before he has it perfected. If he is eating the litter I definitely would get rid of it. Not good for them to eat. Check Dr. Fosters website, I do believe they have potty trays especially for dogs potty pads. The more time you spend training your puppy now, the less time you will spend "re-training" him later. Best of luck to you......... |

Senior Yorkie Talker | Tara is well potty trained, I have always put her on the pad or took her outside and told her go potty, when she did it I yelled happily good potty, good girl and gave her a treat! I would only give her a short walk and said go potty when she was on the grass, give her 5 minutes and if she did nothing go right back. If she did potty, I would let her out longer. This must be consistent for them to learn it and not become confused. She would also go half half on the pad sometimes, but you just put up a new pad, sometimes they won't go on pad that has already been too soiled as they don't like to step into it. Just wipe it put him in a middle of the new pad say go potty here sometimes let him sit on it for a few minutes and then let him go. When he does ok give him again lots of praise good potty good boy/girl and treat immediately. If you treat 10 seconds later he doesn't know what it is for. Must be right after he did it for him this to become a good habit. If he does it anywhere else, tell him off straight away bad potty! and put where you want him to go, on a pad or outside. Tara was potty trained by 16 weeks with occasional mistake. But again need to be strict and consistent and try to prevent mistakes. Don't give him full run of the house until he is potty trained. There's also diapers for doggies, but they are quite costly. I have used them on Tara in our bed when she was small now she uses them when she comes into season. I have only bought one pack and still got some for emergencies. Best is to take him out, Tara would sleep in the kitchen and so I would leave pad for her for the night but during the day I would take her out in regular intervals, it started 9 times a day and went down to 5 times a day by the time she was 5 months old. I hope this helps.

| SUCCESS!!! after a few days and a few different tactics p-nut has successfully peed in the box twice! i'm so happy! we went back to being more strict with his crate training and kept placing him in the box as soon as he came out, and i guess it finally just clicked. and i think he was just as excited as i was when he did it, haha. he came running over to me like a maniac. i took some ideas from a few yt'ers, i took an oversized pad, folded it and placed it on top of a small layer of litter in the box. this way the box is weighted down enough for him but he doesn't have open access to the litter (which by the way, he has pretty much no interest in eating anymore, he kept putting some in his mouth and then spitting right out when he realized it wasn't food). thank you sooo much for everyones ideas and tips! i realize he may still have some accidents but this is a huge step in the right direction |
