Animal Smiley 049 How to tell a yorkie is pregnant

Hi
I wanted to know how you can tell a yorkie is expecting. I don't own a yorkie but my neighbor does, she has two male and female, She thinks that her girl is expecting but isnt sure, if she is she should be due sometime this month. I like to visit with the doggies and have asked her ( since I am looking for a yorkie) to let me know once they are born. Since I have seen this dog almost everyday or every few days she doesnt look like she is expecting. Is there any way I can tell just by looking at her quick glances and petting her? The owner doesnt seem to know if she is expecting or not either or if they even tied, i think that is right word from what I have been reading. Anyway I thought I would ask you guys since you all are very knowledgeable...
Thanks

Well I dont have a lot of experience but my girl is definatly pregnant. In September we went through asking exactly the same questions you are asking now. We did know exactly when Coc and Tiffany tied so we did know there was a good chance that she was pregnant. The answer is: without seeing the vet and getting tests done you couldn't tell for sure Tiff was pregnant untill almost 2 months had gone by. The Vet just said it could easily be a false pregnancy.Just before we were going to get the x-rays taken to confirm pregnancy. (day 56 from the 1st chance of conception) we began to feel the pups move. It was as big a shock to us as it was to Tiffany! We are all just holding our breath, waiting for her to go into labour. The suspense is killing us! I hope this helps and good luck!

well it helps a little, congrats on expecting, did you get the x-ray after all to see about how many she will be having? How exciting!
my nieghbor doesnt know when the tie took place, or if it even took place, but she seems to think that it did. I have asked her if she is showing any signs she says she is getting bigger but i guess since I don't live with the dog I cant tell when I see her, and she is such a cute little dog...

For us, we could barely see and even feel movement in our Maya's little belly as early as Day 45 after conception. We didn't actually hear heartbeats for another week, though I've heard you can hear them at Day 40. Maybe it's because our stethoscope is cheap??? Who knows...lol. But I definitely knew my Maya was pregnant about six weeks in, as I could tell her tummy was growing (and she's only having two puppies, btw). Our x-ray was done this past Monday, which is Day 58, to confirm the number of puppies. They recommend having an x-ray done later in the pregnancy, as the puppies don't develop bone structure until late. I don't know if your neighbor cares to do an ultrasound to find out for ascertainty, but an ultrasound would be your best option at this point. Here's hoping she's pregnant and all goes well.

I've been waiting to find out and its been killing me, I swear its like this dog is mine, lol... I havent even asked her if she has taken her dog to the vet, or anything like that. I don't think she has though... I hate to say this but I don't think she takes very good care of her yorkies. I guess b/c l spoil my doxies and I know if I had a yorkie it wouldnt look like hers does, idk, I just hope she is and that DH will let me get one when they are ready to go ... the suspense is killing me. I think she is getting tired of me asking her "no puppies yet?" lol... if she isnt expecting then I have some breeders lined up but if that is the case then i will have to wait a little longer then anticipated but that will just give me more time to prepare.

If she has a single in there she might not even show at all. Best thing she could do is see her vet.

Hmmm, I just read what you wrote and it got me thinking some more. You say she probably doesn't take good care of her pets (well, at least not the way you take care of yours, it seems), so are you completely sure that she will take excellent care of the puppies? Are you sure you want a puppy from your neighbor afterall? I completely understand the draw of being able to have the puppy and the pup's mother near eachother for visits, and having the breeder next door to answer questions you may have in the future, etc.. I totally get that this could be a neat thing, knowing who you got your puppy from, but have you tried looking at this from another angle? Let's say there is something wrong with the puppy you take from her (hypothetically); and there are a number of things that a puppy can get, whether it's genetic or something the puppy picked up. Are you willing to put a strain on your relationship with your neighbor if a problem becomes an issue that isn't resolved properly? Just make sure that there is definitely a contract written out before considering a puppy from your neighbor- health guarantees, guarantee against particular genetic defects, and also get a record of shots and dewormings. Just a thought, I hope this has given you something to think about.

Good points, sort of like buying a car from a relative.

However it could also cause a strain on the relationship if you buy one from someone else. She might be offended.

Good point JeanieK, I hadn't thought of that. Yep, that's something to think about, as well.

The easiest way to tell if she is pregnant is to stand her up on her hind legs and see if her belly is bulging. Even if she is carrying one pup she will still have a little bulge unless she is a large framed bitch. You can usually start feeling movement about 7 to 10 days before the pups are born. The vulva should be soft and enlarged and the female would have a clear gooey discharge. Her breast were most likely be enlarged also. Do you know how much this female and the sire weights? Breeding these little dogs can be really risky and your neighbor could easily lose her female if she is pregnant and has complications during delivery or after delivery. Please tell your neighbor that she needs to get the little girl to the vet if she thinks she is pregnant. Momma yorkies need lots of help and special care during the whelping and the rearing of the pups. If you neighbors finds out that her yorkie is pregnant then she needs a crash course in whelping pups. Is your neighbor home during the day? If the yorkie is pregnant then she should not be left alone when she is getting close to delivery. Right now your utmost concern should be for the welfare of the expectant momma so please try to do your best to encourage her to get help. You can always consider later if you want a pup if there are any pups and if they survive. Please keep us posted.

I totally understand what you are saying I actually felt bad about looking for a breeder when I did start looking, but she kept telling me that she wasn't sure if she is expecting and I do want a puppy so I went ahead and looked anyway. I hadnt thought about all that, I guess because I was excited, but that is a good point, I will have to think about that and to be honest I would be probably better off going with a breeder, this is the first time for her. I guess b/c I saw how she had the two dogs, where they were sleeping or staying while she was gone, in a kennel that fit the both of them enough to move but there was poopie and I am sure pee in it so it grossed me out, i have mine in a kennel only when we leave but they dont go potty there you know what I mean.

I really havent looked to study her as far as that goes I didnt want to get to personal with it since she isnt mine, the dogs are really little, the female is about 3lbs and the male 5lbs and from what i have read I know that isn't good, I read something about that last night so I am also worried about the female being too small to have the babies she more then likely will only have one but I do understand that she should not have bred her being so small, she is 2yrs old a the male is 1yr I believe. How would I bring up the subject of care w/ her though, I would feel kinda rude to just ask her how she is going to take care of her. she doesnt even know when she should be having the puppy/puppies.

You could say something like "Wow, I just found out that small yorkies are a lot more likely to have complications when delivering puppies and their uterus can even rupture. Are you going to get your female checked by a vet? I would hate for you to lose her. Is there anything I can do to help?"

I do pray that the little dog is not pregnant. If possible please encourage her to get her spayed.

I never saw or felt a puppy move when Kalina was pregnant. She didn't get big at all.

Wow! She sounds incredibly irresponsible, this lady has NO idea what she's doing. 3 lbs.?!? And top that off with a 5 lb. male!?! Good luck with that one. This is more than a little disburbing to me. And also the fact that she doesn't know when to expect puppies indicates that these "ties" or suspected "ties" weren't supervised. And yes, talking about the care of her animals, even if you try to say it nicely, will no doubt offend her. Soooo...I don't know. I'd say look elsewhere for another puppy.
