How to tell a yorkie is pregnant Hi I wanted to know how you can tell a yorkie is expecting. I don't own a yorkie but my neighbor does, she has two male and female, She thinks that her girl is expecting but isnt sure, if she is she should be due sometime this month. I like to visit with the doggies and have asked her ( since I am looking for a yorkie) to let me know once they are born. Since I have seen this dog almost everyday or every few days she doesnt look like she is expecting. Is there any way I can tell just by looking at her quick glances and petting her? The owner doesnt seem to know if she is expecting or not either or if they even tied, i think that is right word from what I have been reading. Anyway I thought I would ask you guys since you all are very knowledgeable... Thanks |
Well I dont have a lot of experience but my girl is definatly pregnant. In September we went through asking exactly the same questions you are asking now. We did know exactly when Coc and Tiffany tied so we did know there was a good chance that she was pregnant. The answer is: without seeing the vet and getting tests done you couldn't tell for sure Tiff was pregnant untill almost 2 months had gone by. The Vet just said it could easily be a false pregnancy.Just before we were going to get the x-rays taken to confirm pregnancy. (day 56 from the 1st chance of conception) we began to feel the pups move. It was as big a shock to us as it was to Tiffany! We are all just holding our breath, waiting for her to go into labour. The suspense is killing us! I hope this helps and good luck! |
well it helps a little, congrats on expecting, did you get the x-ray after all to see about how many she will be having? How exciting! my nieghbor doesnt know when the tie took place, or if it even took place, but she seems to think that it did. I have asked her if she is showing any signs she says she is getting bigger but i guess since I don't live with the dog I cant tell when I see her, and she is such a cute little dog... |
For us, we could barely see and even feel movement in our Maya's little belly as early as Day 45 after conception. We didn't actually hear heartbeats for another week, though I've heard you can hear them at Day 40. Maybe it's because our stethoscope is cheap??? Who knows...lol. But I definitely knew my Maya was pregnant about six weeks in, as I could tell her tummy was growing (and she's only having two puppies, btw). Our x-ray was done this past Monday, which is Day 58, to confirm the number of puppies. They recommend having an x-ray done later in the pregnancy, as the puppies don't develop bone structure until late. I don't know if your neighbor cares to do an ultrasound to find out for ascertainty, but an ultrasound would be your best option at this point. Here's hoping she's pregnant and all goes well.:) |
I've been waiting to find out and its been killing me, I swear its like this dog is mine, lol... I havent even asked her if she has taken her dog to the vet, or anything like that. I don't think she has though... I hate to say this but I don't think she takes very good care of her yorkies. I guess b/c l spoil my doxies and I know if I had a yorkie it wouldnt look like hers does, idk, I just hope she is and that DH will let me get one when they are ready to go ... the suspense is killing me. I think she is getting tired of me asking her "no puppies yet?" lol... if she isnt expecting then I have some breeders lined up but if that is the case then i will have to wait a little longer then anticipated but that will just give me more time to prepare. ;) |
If she has a single in there she might not even show at all. Best thing she could do is see her vet. |

However it could also cause a strain on the relationship if you buy one from someone else. She might be offended. |
Good point JeanieK, I hadn't thought of that. Yep, that's something to think about, as well. |

You could say something like "Wow, I just found out that small yorkies are a lot more likely to have complications when delivering puppies and their uterus can even rupture. Are you going to get your female checked by a vet? I would hate for you to lose her. Is there anything I can do to help?" I do pray that the little dog is not pregnant. If possible please encourage her to get her spayed. |
I never saw or felt a puppy move when Kalina was pregnant. She didn't get big at all. |
