| Barking when alone...HELP! Hi all, I am a brand new yorkie owner. I got my baby boy, Hunter, yesterday and he is 10 weeks old. A true sweetie. We have been bonding and he seems to be adjusting. The only problem is he barks when left alone. We are doing confinement training to paper train him. When I leave him alone to shower or do other things in the house he barks the entire time. His first night he was actually able to sleep the entire night from 1030pm till 6am. Tonight, however, he will not stop barking. I dont want to reenforce the behavior but I am not sure what to do. And it is not only at night, it is also during the day! I dont mind having him with me all the time but I want him to learn to be ok with being alone! Also, him being with me all the time is not feasible because he is not paper trained yet! PLEASE HELP! Any advice would be appreciated. |

Another suggestion would be to get a play pen or an xpen. That way, he has his own area and is not confined. Hope you get it under control!

| When you are not at home, can you put the radio on to a talk station, that way your pup will hear people speaking. I used to do that with my beagle and I do it with Sammy too. Good luck! |

| Would you consider trying something like this with his pee pads on one side. Give him lots of toys, his bed , food and water and put on a radio or tv. This should really help! Amazon.com: Orange Pet Dog Tent Puppy Playpen... I think these are better then crates , JMHO

| maybe if you put this in your room at night it will help with the barking, he is very young , likely scared. He is probablly missing his litter mates

| I just got a 10 week old as well. I haven't had a puppy for a couple of years now and forget this stage. He is a whiner at night too. We bought him a tiny crate (he is only a pound or so) and put it on the night stand (yes it is that small) so he can kind of see us. Or next to the other dog's crates so he can see them. When he whines we clap our hands together really loud. Never letting him see us do this, nor speaking as so he doesn't know we are doing this. We try putting him in the crate during the day for short periods and only taking him out once he's stopped crying. We are on day 5 of having him and he is adjusting well. I sort of feel like the breeder took him away from mommy a little tooo soon, but that's just my personal opinion. Good luck I hope I helped. |

| My little guy turned 16 weeks today and my little girl will be 14 weeks on wednesday. Abby does great when I leave, Max, ahh, he fusses on and off until I return. On the weekends I have been putting them in their area for a few hours while I do some stuff around the house. Abby goes to her little bed and naps, Max splits his time between his bed and the gate, fussing on and off the entire time. Their puppy space is the master bathroom and they can see me when I go to bed. After the first week, they have been sleeping pretty well during the night. We have been waking up at 4:45 every day to play before I go to work. The first few nights I went into the bathroom for about 30 minutes every two hours and sat with them (now I have a flat butt!). I thought Abby would be the fussy one since she was younger, but I was so wrong. When I got my other Yorkie she was younger, just over 8 weeks, and had some issues being alone at night. I ended up making a pallet on the floor and we slept together for the first few weeks. Poppy used to crawl up on the pillow and curl up so she was touching me. She blossomed into a wonderfully self-confident little dog. Good luck with your little guy. I am sure he will settle in soon. |

| I got Riley a snuggle puppy. It has a red plastic heart that has a heartbeat with an on/off button.... he would whine for maybe two minutes then would lay on top of it and go fast to sleep.... Even now....1-year later, He carries it with him from room to room. |

| I agree w the above posts. He is still a very young pup and is missing his littermates. I would get a play pen type pen w bed, pee pads, and a snuggle pup or stuffed toy that reminds him of his litter mates. I use SeaBreeze Petite Pens that are collapsable and portable, but I know a lot of ppl like x-pens. Mine liked the tv left on when they were little.

| When I first got her, ZoE would cry whenever I was out of her sight & or if she just couldn't get to me. She'd cry entire time I was in the shower. After a few weeks, she was ok if we were separated, as long as she could see me, but if I was out of her line of sight, it was non-stop crying. Then about 15 weeks old, she was ok for a little while, but if I was gone too long she'd cry. By 20 weeks old, I could come & go & she was completely fine. Your puppy is still young. He's been taken away from what was familiar to him and he's a little insecure. He'll soon learn that you go, but you come back. It's just gonna take a lil time.

| When a puppy is brought home you have to remember that that pup is used to having mom or and or siblings to play with and sleep with. Suddenly puppy is in a strange land with no mom and no siblings. We put them in a crate and expect them to accept this change with no problem. Just because we gave them a soft bed does not mean that is a big comfort to a lonely confused puppy. Sorry but puppy is going to cry. I know everyone teaches crate training for puppies but I have always let my babies sleep with me. I am not a real sound sleeper and if the puppy got up I would put it on the pee pad. Gracie was wonderful about sleeping though the night. She just wanted a warm body to sleep with. Making a large enough confined area for puppy during the day is important. The baby needs a place to potty and room to walk around and a place to rest on. Toys to distract are necessary. |
