When a puppy is brought home you have to remember that that pup is used to having mom or and or siblings to play with and sleep with. Suddenly puppy is in a strange land with no mom and no siblings. We put them in a crate and expect them to accept this change with no problem. Just because we gave them a soft bed does not mean that is a big comfort to a lonely confused puppy. Sorry but puppy is going to cry.
I know everyone teaches crate training for puppies but I have always let my babies sleep with me. I am not a real sound sleeper and if the puppy got up I would put it on the pee pad. Gracie was wonderful about sleeping though the night. She just wanted a warm body to sleep with.
Making a large enough confined area for puppy during the day is important. The baby needs a place to potty and room to walk around and a place to rest on. Toys to distract are necessary.
