I wanted to add one more think to watch for while you are looking for your puppy. Make sure that you visit the home and see the parents of the puppies too. When I was looking for a puppy several years ago I was drawn to an ad that I saw in Kajiji for yorkie puppies. They were located in Bolingbrook, IL, had a cute website and even had pictures of their teenage daughters who was part of their business taking care of the puppies. It wasn't until I called and spoke to the husband that I started to question what was really going on with the puppies they were selling. He told me that about once a month he drove to Missouri and picked up puppies from a breeder (puppymill) and brought them back to IL to sell. She was "wonderful" and that although he currently didn't have any puppies he would be traveling there within the next 2 weeks once the current litter was old enough to leave their mom AND she usually had at least one litter a month! They were puppy brokers! Thank god I was smart enough to see the red flags and run in the other direction.

I'd like to also add that he mentioned that there were several others in the area that also brought puppies back from her and several other breeders to sell in IL. So please be very careful.

That is why when I travel to pick up the next pup, I will pack a suitcase and live with the breeder for a week to 10 days!

Now what say you if the breeder comes live with you? What a great way to assist you in aclimating your pup to it's new home.

We would welcome that for sure. Plenty of space, her own bedroom and bath, good food, plenty of hospitality and a few trips downtown or sporting event!

We found a breeder in the local newspaper and we're going to check her puppies out tomorrow. We asked her all of the standard questions, but a red flag raised when she said she only has the father and that the mother is with her daughter. How do I know that she is telling us the truth? I tried googling her online and I see that she used to show german shephards in the late 90's and is a part of the skye terriers club of america national rescue chair. I've also noticed that her name has been in the paper consistently for the past 3 weeks with new litters each time. Am I just being overly cautious here? What are everyone's thoughts?

Sounds like a broker. Stay away is my opinion.

Forget the newspaper route.....if you have to, wait for a YTCA breeder to have a litter and approve you. Would you buy a mate thru the paper?

What this statement is telling you is with anything else. Do your homework.
A contract is between the breeder and the buyer. Not with the buyer and the YTCA.

You might be receiving PMs from YT members offering you puppies. My suggestion to you would be to make sure that you screen all offers very carefully. There are many members that only come to the forum to offer puppies for sale and that does not make them reputable. If you are looking for a well bred yorkie the YTCA is an excellent starting point in your search. Illinois has many members of this breed club and speaking from a fellow IL resident this is where I would start my search now that I know more about how to purchase a puppy. I can remember being in the same dilemma as you are checking newspaper ads and being very confused.

Although Breezeaway makes a valid point in saying that the YTCA does not endorse any of the breeders, this type of disclaimer is used for legal purposes in all aspects of business as I am sure you are aware.
Members have an obligation to hold themselves to a higher standard of breeding, many raise puppies for the show ring and look to better the breed. There is more to breeding than just putting 2 dogs together to make a puppy. Some of the things reputable breeders consider when deciding on a breeding would be to eliminate faults and breed a Yorkie that is recognized as what the breed should like regarding size, colors, good temperament etc.

The list with the YTCA gives you a nice launching pad of breeders that have been judged by their peers for the quality of their breeding program that produces puppies.

Breeze, thanks so much for posting that and pointing out that it is Caveat Emptor, and the buyer needs to be smart, visit, references, buy the standard Yorkie, and deal with the best. Glad to see that the YTCA is honest and tells it like it is. Have a great day.
