I have a few questions that I hope someone will take the time to answer. Please bear with me, as I am totally not trying to start anything - I just love to go to dog shows and am trying to become more knowledgeable.
1. What do you mean (can't remember who said it) that it is too hard for the newbies now?
2. What does it mean that "the next five years will be so hard"?
3. Also, if the puppy were DQd because it was too light, doesn't it stand to reason that it will get even lighter as it gets older?
4. Where can I find the old standard and the new standard so that I can compare the two?
All the information about too light, too dark, thumbprints, etc. -- it's really just too much. I am totally confused.

I need to clarify that the DQ'd dogs had 2 different owners. After I read my post it sounded like I was talking about one owner. The dog Dq'd for not blue enough was an open dog and the one for too light was a 12-18 mo. bitch.

The standard cannot be changed again for 5 years. (Now it is 4 years)
3. Also, if the puppy were DQd because it was too light, doesn't it stand to reason that it will get even lighter as it gets older?
The reason for the new DQ's was to stop parti-colored Yorkeis from showing but because of the wording it affected the light and dark spectrums of our breed.
4. Where can I find the old standard and the new standard so that I can compare the two?
When reading the new standard, just remove the last portion of the standard that deals with the DQ and you have the old standard.

I knew she had a puppy dog is that the one she had in bred by or is the one that got DQ'ed the other one? Who was the bitch that got DQ'ed? I guess I didn't know that owner? Do you know how old the male was that was DQ'd? I didn't pay attention on the show results. Yes, you are correct with the way our standard is written they are within in their rights to DQ. I don't have a problem with a light yorkie being DQ'd but I do have one that is when we know it's going to break but again as you said the judges are within their rights

The open dog is the one that was DQ'd. He is Riverwalk breeding. He was born in April of 2006, so he is nearly 3. The bred-by wasn't a puppy, he was the one she showed at the specialty in Dallas and I believe he got RWD the first day in Denver.

The bitch was owned by a new exhibitor and she was very upset. She was a real trooper and came back the next day. Her dog was a Gold Dust/Durrer breeding.

I have a question that I am curious about. I keep hearing about the different color enhancements that can be used to make the yorkie's steel blue look darker. I think it is called Black Rage and there may be other products out there. Also I heard just the other day about something you can spray on the gold of the light dogs to make the roots look darker. I also heard a while back where a judge asked an exhibitor if their dog was dyed, which it was not. So I am wondering if a yorkie has been enhanced to look darker than it really it will a judge DQ that dog if he thinks it has been enhanced and have any of you ever been questioned by a judge about the color of your dog?

Yes, that is what I have found out. So why would an exhibitor show a light dog if they can just enhance it and not worry about getting DQ'ed? I guess if they were a novice that could explain it.

If a judge dq's a dog for being dyed it is a EX for a foreign substance in the coat and leads to a suspension from AKC. I can tell you that I believe that there was at least 1 dog being shown that I could tell was dyed and the judge did not DQ. I may be wrong, but it looked dyed to me. In my opinion the judge knows the circumstances of the dyed dq and was being nice by not dqing...

You are correct it would be an EX and not a DQ because if a judge thinks the color is enhanced it's called a foreign substance so that is an EX not a DQ. Most experienced judges know when a dog is enhanced...I was talking to a judge once and was commenting on the color that came off on her hands after going over the yorkies one time LOL...Sometimes you can tell a yorkie is enhanced and sometimes you can't just depends on how well someone can do it LOL! A good portion of the specials are dyed. I saw on a website that offers color enhancing products on their website LOL...

One thing I notice when I was looking at the pictures of the dogs at Westminster is that many of them looked really dark and the gold looked more like a tan on many of them. Was it just the pictures or were there a lot of darker yorkies there? I sure would loved to have been there.

You also have to remember in pictures and TV the lighting with flashes and the lighting in the building pictures are taken in can and will affect color. Some dogs will appear lighter than normal or darker depending on the lightening.

The one that was DQ in Orlando...

I know the breeder personally (for a long, long time) and she has some Very, very nice dogs. She has been showing for about 25 years and knows the standard and has had quite a few champions over the years. The one that was DQ for being dark is only 1.5 years old. She will probably clear and will hold a nice blue. For a bitch - I would rather them break later than earl. Her sire had some great wins too. Yes, she took 1/W/BB/BW just the day before and I believe also has other wins.
