So what's the secret to a beautiful smile? Is it the raw meaty bones in particular that provides a dental workout - or the whole raw diet for all around health?

.......I'm sure it's both.........but the raw meaty bones really give their teeth a workout ...the pulling and tearing of the meat off the bone, the chewing and grinding of the raw bones....some (esp pet food companies) want you to think kibble is hard enough to clean teeth but it only adds to the tartar build up.....and when vets give a teeth cleaning it's only cosmetic meaning the real problem lies in the bacteria that goes below the surface and effects the general health ....dogs LOVE and CRAVE raw bones...............pet food companies know this........why else would they make most of their treats in the shape of a bone....as if our dogs really care about the shape!!!........they want the REAL THING!

Fantastic! It's great for me to have that incentive since I have Kalina on the raw diet.

My question: My niece adopted a retired Greyhound with very bad teeth and the Vet said it's because she was fed raw meat all the time. Do you think some Vets just don't believe in the raw diet?

Absolutly, they are paid alot of money to promote certain brands of dog food so its not in their interest to say anything good about raw.

Its the whole thing but mainly the RMB's as its the action of ripping and tearing the meat off and crunching through the bones

Yep, know what you mean. When I switched vets a couple of years ago, my Mozart (mixed Shih-tzu/Maltest/Silky) was eleven. The vet looked at him and guestimated him to be seven! Then, when she looked in his mouth, words like: "Awesome" and "Amazing" sprang forth. Then, I told her he was RAW fed (three years, at that time). Of course, RAW isn't a miracle cure for all ails; but, it does improve a lot of things: teeth, allergies, skin, coat and, (yes) even arthritis. Before the RAW diet, Mo was throwing up every dog food we tried, and dragging his left hind leg. Now, he might get tummy upsets every frew weeks; but, not every day like before. And, moves a lot better - no more dragging his hind quarter from pain.

That's very exciting that your 9-year-old is so healthy! You should be very proud. I'm one of those who is afraid of the raw diet. While there are a lot of testimonials like yours on the Web, there's no research saying it's safe. As you admit, your dog is a "guineau pig." I'm not willing to do that with my dogs. I hope you're right. Thanks for trying to ecucate me!

How time consuming is feeding the raw diet? Also how expensive is it? I would love to switch mine over to it once I move, I would love to do it now, but my mom says NO WAY, so I have to wait til december. My pitbull has horrible allergies and shedding and I think the raw would help her immensely. SHe already gets a RMB once a month and loves it!

There are two books by Tom Lonsdale, 'Work Wonders' is the more simple one, providing the knowledge of how to do it and the benefits, this one is better for beginners. 'Raw Meaty Bones' deals with the more political side of raw feeding and is more of a debate rather than a guide of how to feed raw.

Obviously the researching before you start, reading on the internet and reading books is very time consuming however once you start it doesn't take that long, about 20 minutes a day, if that. My dogs are worth it. The cost entirely depends on where you source your supplies from. If you can get a deal going with a local butcher or meat supplier it can be very cost effective.
