The weird thing about homecooking is it's not quite as easy as "the basic food groups", which is why I think people get turned off by it. There are a gazillion opinions - and then I think you have to decide where you land in the midst of all those opinions, that's the hard part. I'm of the belief that dogs don't need grains (they're just filler) and veggies, though somewhat beneficial, are debatable. I also think high protein is just fine, in fact better, as long as the dog isn't liver or kidney or otherwise compromised. BUT, if you seriously wanted to go for it, I'd be willing to draw up a few recommendations for you - I'd probably want to put it in a word document or something you can print. BTW, MARCELS POOS TURNED FIRM 1.5 DAYS AFTER BEING ON HIS NEW DIET...UN-FREAKING-BELIEVABLE!!!!!! Plus, oddly, his poos don't really smell anymore...neither do Wylie's.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Thank you!!!! And, I'm just now realizing the non-smelly poop as a good indicator for a healthy, absorbable diet, fascinating!

| Yep it makes sense as the smell of the poop is down to the undigested food in it. When they are on a very good diet that really suits them they should be able to digest almost all if not all of it. |

| Well we're off chicken and on flounder. Both my 2 peanuts had a tummy problem this week and I had been giving them boiled chicken and rice with some steamed veggies. After reading this they got flounder, steamed veggies and oops had to give them a little rice tonight for got to get potatoes (I don't usually eat them). Later I will give them some chopped up bananas with their yogurt.....boy are they loving this!!!! Tina |

| This thread is very interesting. The part about chicken being bad makes no sense to me but I'm not a nutritionist. I am kind of in a spot with Ellie. Chicken is the meat she tolerates best (probably has to do with her liver). I don't want to be hurting her but she gets itchy from lamb, beef isn't good for suspected liver problems, fish has too many purines with UTI problems.... So I guess we stick with chicken. I'm not happy to know that it isn't the best thing for her though.

| I have been giving Zoey boiled chicken and carrot twice a day... She has never had a single runny stool in her life. She has an iron stomach. I could change her food every day and still perfect firm poo every time. I am wondering about something for variety tho. Do I need to add fish or lamb? Do I need to be mixing it up, or can she do well on chicken alone. I sup with missing link and bone meal + pet tab vit everyday.

| I am in NO WAY an expert on the nutrition subject but my gut tells me that a diet of just chicken and carrot is just not covering the nutritional pyramid for doggies. I think you did mention vitamins although I myself would prefer to have them get all their nutrients from their food. But as I said before I am sure that others on the list know much more than I as far as what is acceptable and healthy. I myself generally feed my 2 a premium quality dry dog food for the most part and some times cook for them. Hope I helped even a little. Tina Last edited by tinav; 09-12-2007 at 07:50 AM. |

That was also why she does not like chicken/rice for sick dogs - bc they're already compromised, and with chicken being allergenic, it might exacerbate the symptoms. Again, chicken NOT bad, just allergenic. Does that help clear it up?

| Oh I'm so glad to hear you found something for Marcel. Cross our fingers that this does it. I am going to call/email her for a consultation for Zoe's diet, who too has major food allergies to basic things like peas and carrots which is found on EVERY food list. So maybe she can put together a well balanced menu for homecooking for us. It drives us nuts (we feel so bad for her) to see her scratching all day long so I'm sure we completely understand you. Hollistic is the way to go! I'm so glad you posted about this, thank you very much for her contact info. |
