Just Had A 1-hr Consult w/ an Animal Nutritionist!!! She was SO great. She works for a holistic vet in California and consults for pets w/ cancer as well. She has a Masters, an MBA, and is a CCN (certified clinical nutritionist). We had a phone consult about Marcel. As some of you know, I've been struggling ever since he had his 2 bouts w/ giardia - with mushy/mucousy/jelly stools. She said she couldn't count how many dogs she sees w/ ibd/ibs/colitis who had giardia as puppies, then come to her 5 years later with a chronic history of mushy stools. I've tried everything, am homecooking presently w/ premium kibble for grazing. Well, she's putting Marcel on a hypoallergenic home cooked diet w/ NO kibble whatsoever. I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOO excited after talking with her and am finally hopeful for a solution for my little guy. It will be a whitefish-based diet, eventually adding in salmon, but not yet. And, 2 new supplements for his gut. From there, we will add things to his diet if he does well. One of the MOST INTERESTING things she mentioned was that, when your dog is sick w/ diarrhea, soft stools, and/or nausea - one the WORST things you can give is BOILED CHICKEN AND RICE. She said that chicken is one of the most highly allergenic foods she encounters in dogs - and that brown rice is allergenic as well. She is constantly educating vets about trying to stop the myth of giving boiled chicken and rice. Anyway, just had to share. If anyone has issues that are turning chronic and needs an expert in nutrition (bc vets are generally not experts there), I highly recommend her, she is very sharp. GO MARCEL! GO MARCEL'S POO! |
I agree about the chicken. I never give mine poultry, but if I could hunt some good healthy phesant or grouse in South Dakota then I'd give that to them. :D I'm not sure I can agree about not giving rice when they are sick. I've done it many, many times with fosters and it has worked beautifully. I'm sure she knows her stuff, but be very careful about buying the vitamins and such from her. Remember, they make a lot of money selling items that you could get much cheaper elsewhere, and they may not even need some of those vitamins..........it's a "won't hurt" type of thing. Good luck getting your baby straightened out once and for all. |

I bet your babies love that fresh pheasant! |
Wow, sounds very interesting-------please keep us posted!:) |
oh i'm so happy for you!! so glad you will be able to get things sorted out with Mr. Marcel. Let us know how he does on his new diet. |
Do you have her info that you can give me? I just started vet school and I really want to learn more about nutrition for dogs and cats because you just don't learn much about it in vet school. I would love to talk to her sometime. |
Fantastic! Sounds great. Yes its not great to give boiled chicken and rice when they are sick. To be honest most vets know squat about nutrition. A few months ago a nutritionist advised me to give live yogurt, banana and digestive enzymes when they have runny poo. It works fantastically and makes sense as it restores the good bacteria in their tummies. |
That's so great, Wylie's mom!! I'm thinking about doing this for Miko for his liver condition in the future, but I was considering using Susan Lauten at University of Tennessee...Fortunately, the homemade diet that I have now is working beautifully for him, but I might want another one to possibly alternate between... Was it a phone consultation or did you meet her? Does she deal with liver compromised dogs too? |
That's great. I may need to find her info out. Cali scratches all the time on a lamb and brown rice diet. Is there a certain prepareed food or do you hav eto home cook the white fish? |

Oh and with chicken being bad.....do eggs have the same ill effects? |
For those asking for more info - her name is Susan Davis and her website is here: http://www.askariel.com/. I did a phone consult, but I sure wish I could've met her in person. She is just lovely and smart and caring! A portion of any profits go to charity. MyFairLacy - I'm sure she'd be THRILLED to talk to a soon-to-be vet! YorkieLuv - Yes, she mentions MVD and shunts on her site - if you click on the "specific illnesses" tab, there is more info there :D Patti - she doesn't recommend prepared food; her choice is home cooked (she also supports raw in some cases) - she suggests, for ibd and even allergies in general (which are so related to ibd), whitefish like tilapia/cod/trout/sole - then adding salmon in (bc they need fat) after a couple weeks if they're doing well. (plus there is more to the entire recipe, but fish is the protein) She has seen miracles..and I'm hoping for one. I paid $75 for the consult, and I feel it was very well spent! |
Diggers - she is a big proponent of the canned pumpkin for diarrhea! She also said just the diet I'm putting Marcel on "rests" the entire digestive system bc there are no allergens in it. SO, I would think for your friend's pup - white fish and pumpkin and a little potato would be the prescription. Susan did not mention eggs - except that she likes the eggshell version of calcium supplementing OVER the bone meal - so I'm starting that as well! Geesh! Tell her to PM me too if she'd like. |
