| Many years ago I had a Pekinese that herniated a disk in her back by jumping up on the couch to get in my lap (something she had done coutless times over many years). She was paralized from the shoulders back and was so pitiful. At the time treatment was limited (as were my finances) and we had to have her euthanized. I was hysterical for a week. Since I knew that Yorkies sometimes have similar problems, along with knee problems, I bought some "pet steps". These steps allow my Kodi to get on and off the couch or bed without jumping. Even though he is bigger now and could probably get down by himself, I encourage him to ALWAYS use the stairs.

Hi, Bakerlady & Bakerman. Just read this thread about your little Sedrick. I am so happy he received the correct diagnosis, and is doing so well. I am in the process of adopting a rescue Yorkie puppy that had surgery for Atlanto Axial Subluxation, 3 weeks ago. Has your neurologist had any thoughts about whether this will cause Sedrick problems in the future, as he gets older? I know just how you feel about Sedrick, I have two little Yorkies and they are the joy of my life. Sheila

Amanda, I am so sorry that you lost your little Tonka. I know that had to break your heart. I am in the process of adopting a rescue puppy that had this surgery 3 weeks ago. Could you please tell me what kind of problems your vet felt that Tonka would have, later in life, as a result of the surgery? Again, my heart goes out to you. Sheila

Hello Sheila thank you as to your reply. The Vets say that Sedrick may have some Arthritis in his older years but the that should be expected. Congradulations on your new addition. We are talking about adding another one as well but I think it will be in 6 months to a year from now. Isn't it amazing how easy it is to get attached to a yorkie they just dig their way into your heart. Bakery Lady

Hi, Baker Lady. Thank you so much for replying. I haven't gotten my little rescue yet. She still needs to recover further from the surgery, and she needs a liver biopsy, but I am waiting and praying for my little one. She's been such a fighter! I am owned by two other little Yorkie girls, Sydney, who is 9, and Kia, who is 6. Oh yes, they do own our hearts amazingly fast! Well, arthritis can be managed with exercise and meds later in life. I'm so happy you were able to act so quickly on little Sedricks behalf! Sheila

Hi Sheila How was the puppy diagnosed with AAS? Did she present with trauma like Sedrick did or was it found through xray? We are very fortunate with Sedrick because the extent of the trauma should have killed him. We had a great team of surgeons in Saskatoon who went above and beyond anything to make sure that everything was done right and we were able to take him home five days after surgery. The prognosis for recovery is guarded but good. Sedrick was completely paralyzed for the 1st 3 weeks and then gradually regained purposeful movement in all 4 legs. He now runs around and chases the cats and the only time you would know that he had a severe injury is when he is tired...his left back leg drags a tiny bit. I am waiting to hear today from the surgeons after they look at his 8 week cast xray and I will let you know what they say - he as been cast free since July 4th (co-incidently Independent day!!) One other thing I forgot to mention was did they give your puppy any steroid therapy after surgery? If they did please remember that these meds can cause gastrointestinal problems (ulcers, colitis) so please be careful not to feed the puppy anything but good quality dog food. Lorraine

Hi, Lorraine. The puppy had lost the ability to walk after a period of time in rescue, so she was diagnosed with AAS through an ex ray. Yes, indeed, you were so very fortunate with little Sedrick. He is blessed to have such loving parents. I will pray that the surgeons have a good report regarding his 8 week ex ray. I don't 'think' they have given the puppy any steroids. She has an undiagnosed liver disease and is on a low protein prescription diet. When she recovers from her surgery, she will have a liver biopsy. I imagine you will always regard the 4th of July, as "Sedrick's Independence Day". Sheila

Hi, Lorraine. Just wondering if the surgeons gave you a report after they looked at little Sedrick's 8 week ex rays? I hope it was very encouraging news. Sheila

Hi Sheila Unfortunately Sedricks vet and his surgeon are playing telephone tag. If I don't get a response on Monday maybe I will have to join their game!! I'll let you know as soon as I hear. By the way, what is the puppy's name you are going to adopt and do you have a picture of him/her? Lorraine

Hi, Lorraine. Oh, I've experienced the vets playing phone tag. They keep us on pins and needles.I have pictures of Mini that her foster mom sent to me in e-mails, but I don't know how to post from an e-mail. If you go to www.puppymillrescue.com and click on any of the dogs, Mini Mouse's page will come up first. She is so precious. Sheila
