Hi Sheila
How was the puppy diagnosed with AAS? Did she present with trauma like Sedrick did or was it found through xray? We are very fortunate with Sedrick because the extent of the trauma should have killed him. We had a great team of surgeons in Saskatoon who went above and beyond anything to make sure that everything was done right and we were able to take him home five days after surgery. The prognosis for recovery is guarded but good. Sedrick was completely paralyzed for the 1st 3 weeks and then gradually regained purposeful movement in all 4 legs. He now runs around and chases the cats and the only time you would know that he had a severe injury is when he is tired...his left back leg drags a tiny bit. I am waiting to hear today from the surgeons after they look at his 8 week cast xray and I will let you know what they say - he as been cast free since July 4th (co-incidently Independent day!!)
One other thing I forgot to mention was did they give your puppy any steroid therapy after surgery? If they did please remember that these meds can cause gastrointestinal problems (ulcers, colitis) so please be careful not to feed the puppy anything but good quality dog food.
