| I think if they are neutered the chances of them marking is lower. My male is neutered and he doesnt mark. Humping on the other hand is something you will have to contend with. It is common and all male dogs do it. My male has been neutered and he still humps a teddybear. Get a stuffed animal that is his size to hump and that will keep him from humping legs. Also get the stuffed animal when he is still young because they are usually very young when they start it. Good luck these are just the more trying things you go through when you own a male.

| You still can get "in the mood" if you're "fixed" unfortunately, but sometimes humping has nothing to do with sex, it's completely a dominance thing. If males are neutered before they learn to lift their leg, chances are they never will, if no one else teaches them how.

| i read the article and i thought it made me reconsider spaying my lil girl by 6 months =/ i have a year old male yorkie and i got him neutered by 6 months and he has no health problems, but did notice that he's a bit taller and he had a lot of growth spurts. im not sure if it was because of him being neutered, but i knew he was going to be bigger since he was a big pup. there were some things that i can relate to in the article. anyone else can relate? i really want to prevent my lil girl from all the cancers that she can get if she doesn't get spayed, but if i do wait 14 months her chances of getting them are even higher!! ooOOoOOOooh man, im a worried mommy !! |

| Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | For a female dog there is no reason at all to not have her spayed at 6 months is she is not going to bred. That article was one vet's opinion, and i personally found alot of it to conflict with and/or be just the opposite of what i've learned from vets i've worked with over the years. While it was interesting to read what he said i didn't agree with a good portion of it. THere are more health risks related to not having a dog fixed at 6 months then there are to having it fixed at 6 months, especially with females. With the first heat the chances of the dog getting breast cancer later in life goes up by 50%. the second heat brings it up another 20-25%. I haven't seen conclusive evidence that dogs get "taller" when they are fixed younger then a year. In fact the dogs are usually smaller then unneutered dogs. Let's look at male dogs. Neutered males are generally smaller and more femine then unneutered males. Unneutered males get bigger and stockier and have a bigger/wider head and shoulders. With females i haven't seen as big of a size difference as there is in males. |

| I'm a female and I own a male yorkie and for sure I wont get him fixed and yes that's cruel in my opinion . Plus I asked the opinion of one the top vet in Canada and he reassured me that a small size dog doesn't need to be neutered and chances od developpng cancers are small . I will be going to Paris France and will ask a vet over there for his opinion but im sure he will give me the same answer . Quote:

| It's cruel because you are depriving your dog from his natural behavior . Would I go and remove my ovaries or breast to avoid getting cancer ? no . so its same thing for my dog . Quote:

| I've got to ask that same question, HOW is it cruel? It's actually a pretty darn simple procedure, most of my boys have come back w/ surgical glue even rather than stitches, a few glances in that direction as a farewell I suppose and they go on back to normal life..LOL Cruel to me (not saying you'd let this happen with him) is the thousands and thousands of unwanted, unloved, neglected, starving, abandoned puppies and dogs in this world that will only see their fate change in death. Had their "producers" (not calling them breeders!) only spayed/neutered their animals, they would never even be here to suffer...IMHO, THAT is cruel. It just takes one time to get loose, and meet up with some stray "pretty girl dog" to produce some pups that are going to have a terrible existance, had the male only been neutered (and the female spayed!) that would have never happened.

| That's funny you should mention that! There are actually trials and research going on now (and some insurance companies are covering this!) for removing breast tissue from women who are highly at risk for breast cancer BEFORE they get it, and putting in nice big "falsies" instead. I am at high risk for Breast Cancer, so I have actually been following this, and considering it for myself in the future...so I am really totally not "getting" what you're saying...but everyone has the right to their opinion and disagreeing is only human. ![]() Quote:
