| Buying 2yr old had Kidney Stone Surgery Hi! I met a darling Yorkie today & the people selling her. She had kidney stone surgery a week ago. Her scar seems long but healed. She had 2 puppies 5 mos ago & spends alot of time in a kennel. That will change when I get her, as will a healthy preventative diet, etc. I wondered thio, she was still on pain pills when we met her today, surgery was over a week ago. She didn't fuss when held BUT do you think the pain meds made her a mellow quite sweet dog? I hope her great personality remans after meds gone & we buy her next week? What do you think? I am a first time owner & want to give her the healthiest life ever. Any other comments to prevent these stones from ever occurring are grately appreciated. I was suprised she was still on pain pills! Thank you for any advice you can provide :-) |

| I had a foster who had kidney stone surgery. Two weeks after she was still finishing up her meds and still had her staples in but she was acting fine. In fact, the next day after surgery she was acting fine, as I'm sure whatever discomfort she had from the incision was much less than having the stones! She was being fed Beneful which I believe contributed to her health issues. Avoid any foods that don't list a specific type of meat such as beef, chicken, salmon, duck; for example they will just put "meat". And avoid any that have by-products of any type. First ingredient should be a type of protein. Why are the people selling her? Sounds like they used her as a puppy factory and now she's too old and getting rid of her? Those people don't deserve her. She should be in a loving home and not in a crate all day.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and welcome to YT ! I too am wondering what they're telling you as to why they're rehoming her...? Sounds like a sad situation and I so hope she finds her furever home soon. Hopefully 107barney will see this thread as she's dealt extensively w/ stones too and would probably have some thoughts on prevention...

| I hope I am replying right..new here! Thank you capt_noonie& Wylie's Mom !! We met doggie & spent a couple of hours with her. She is well trained & the owner did take on the expense of surgery. They want her in a home where she not in kennel anymore. Her scar had under desolving stitches. & yes I will follow the proper feeding "rules" as they did not! Long story but trusted them more than any other rehoming buy & drop or ship place. Let's hope I dont make a mistake. She very good from what we say...but I'm nervous. 1st time dog owner. Need you folks advice...thank you soo much. This yorkie will be in a quiet free roam home & fed the appropriate diet!! Just gotta make sure me do the right thing for us both! |

| I would suggest you get a baby gate or an ex pen to confine her to the spaces you want her to stay in for at least the first few months. I've found that rehomed dogs usually take a few weeks to get attached to you, and in the meantime will wander off in the house doing god knows what. It's better for potty training and in general for them to be near you so you can keep an eye on them. Another thing I would really consider is to feed on a schedule. That way you know if she has eaten. If they haven't eaten in a day or so they may not be feeling well. Also that will mean they will usually need to go to the bathroom around the same time each day as well. Go for walks at the same time each day. Dogs love schedules and look forward to them.

| capt_noonie Thank You! I am OCD to a fault & love schedules & will be changing her diet to new food as they give her food that is bad for her health-especially to prevent further kidney stones.! I have designated my kitchen for her & will buy her the same pet pen that she had but can leave her door open & she will be safe at night. I am home all day & will absolutely keep my eye on her. She was very well mannered & trained BUT she will need to be used to a new home...& thankfully not in a caged pen all day...poor girl! I do worry about her chewing on my many extension cords etc & I have small & huge plants (some are 25 yrs old-those were my babies before) BUT i researched all the food to do & not & the plants! Of course my plants are on the no-no list. Some say wait & keep my eyes on her & she may have no interest. My mom had dogs & houseplants & they never had eaten the leaves (1 just furniture oppsie). And if you don't mind sharing more wisdom..I have allergies. I posted a q about that too! I hope to get as much advise as possible before adding this sweet dog into my life...fur-ever :-) kim |

| I posted on your other threads too. I don't think the extension cords will be an issue. Like I said, she's not a puppy that is teething. That is when they get in the most trouble. I like plants too and I'd have a really hard time getting rid of the plants when she may or may not even notice them.

| capt_noonie u are so nice! Thank you...I am making sure (overly) that she is safe & I am prepared for the wonderful changes having a companion will bring. I will post her picture once I am her new mom! She isn't photogenic & I want to have her groomed, but am going to wait & let her settle in her new home first... & we just git our first winter possible snow & cold out. It will give us time to bond at home together. Any other thoughts you may have, I am happy to learn..fast ;-) kim |

If she does start chewing on anything which I don't think she will given that she is not a puppy, you can buy Bitter Apple spray and spray on the cords etc.

| THANK YOU EVERYONE! Happy New Year! I have learned so much from ALL & am still not sure about this girl. I only have a phone & it wouldn't upload her photo. She does not look like the healthy fluffy Yorkies here or I've seen, but more like a rescue dog that has been thru alot. I might be able to test babysit her as the owners go out of town this weekend. Between her health questions & my allergies & I never owned a dog (but learned so much from this experience) I an hesitant. I would take her for the weekend, if they let me, then take her for a vet check. She is a scraggly girl but sweet. I shall update again. I hope I am posting this right, so those that have helped me DO see my..."Thank you All & Have a Happy Ner Year!" |

| Scraggly hair, oh that sucks. Just like my girl. All the more reason she shouldn't have been bred, and all the better reason for her not to be with these people any longer. That's probably why it's hard for them to "sell" her. Usually if it's a great looking dog, people are fighting over who gets to "adopt" one. But one that doesn't look that great, it's hard to give them away for free. Which are where the rescues sometimes come in. Take strongly into consideration everything, which I know you are. I would advise against taking her IF in a few months you think it's not working out and uprooting her again. On the other hand, animals do adapt quickly. If you are not 100% sure, or you are not the type of person to give up things for an animal, I would not take her. But let me tell you, I have fostered many, and many have not looked good. They all are absolute love bugs no matter what they looked like. There's just something about this breed that is so special. Honestly I don't know if the weekend babysitting would be beneficial or not. It takes a few weeks usually for the dog to get comfortable. Toto took almost a year!

| oh yes Captain! capt_noonie is that toto in your photo? Adorable...Storm has less to fluff & my friend was concerned as her ears had little hair. Toto...I live in Kansas! Storm is not a very girl name but I doubt I could change it at 2+yrs. She connected to me immediatly. They aren't shopping her around as I have dragged my feet on many dogs. I don't care if she isn't the yorkie that looks like the rest. I care about her health. She had a litter at 2nd heat & only 2 pups, one didn't make it, then the kidney stone. They paid for her surgery & her scar looked good. The vet check will tell me more if she does become mine. The weekend idea was to test my allergies, her behavior, I want to see her play, bark, they trained her well (supposedly) tricks, & just so sweet. I would not get her then turn around & sell her. It's not fair to her. Well tomorrow I will know if I get to test having a dog or then just let another take her. I hope they do as much research as I did & she heals & gets a good life. They want $400 for a no papers not well not yorkie fluffy...perhaps a grooming or diet change. I fell for her bonding to me right away...but then I started wondering about her health & if I could take a dog that had such a rough road. Thanks for writing "always" :-) Tell tToto hello from Dorothy (Kim) in Kansas! |

Anyway, you CAN change their name even after years and years. It helps if you start with something that sound similar, or rhymes, but really if you just start calling them by a new name, eventually they get it. Like for Toto, that is his "official" name but he also calls when we call "Turtle" which kind of sounds like Toto. We also call him Little Man bc he's barely 5 lbs which is totally small to me. Uni goes by Nunez, which doesn't sound like Uni at all but she knows all her nicknames. Now if she comes or not when called is dependent of her mood.

| No doggie but Thank You! Thank you all once again. I did "Not" get the yorkie girl I asked q's about. She had to many questionable health problems for me (a first time owner) to take on. Her owners do seem very particular as to where her next home will be. I'm sure she will be fine & believe it was the best decision. Thank you for all your time responding & helping me! I will pass this Yorkie Chat group to them & hope they join in....Til the next time a yorkie comes my way....Kim :-) |
