| Vet instructions Am I the only one that sometimes finds it hard to follow vet instructions? ZoE vomited four times this morning. She was retching bad. So I called the vet to give him a heads up, just incase things went south fast. He said to monitor her, withhold food for 24 hours, feed her a small meal in the morning and if she doesn't keep it down, to bring her in. Well, tonight ZoE is looking for food. She's drinking water and peeing and then coming to me and kicking her legs back on the rug to let me know she went pee. She is used to getting a treat for any good potty, so she is whining and barking at me so I look at her, and then she 's kicking her legs back again to keep telling me she pottied. I know she won't starve going without food for a day, but gosh its hard to do, especially when she knows I take care of her and is looking at me like "why aren't you feeding me?" with those big brown eyes.

| I don't always take their word as gospel but in this case I would. Vomiting 4x would concern me enough that I would withhold food as your vet suggested.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | To be totally honest, I have never been one to withhold food - it just bothers me too much. Mine haven't really been super sick w/ vomiting, but when they did have a couple episodes I'd usually give them straight carby things like soda crackers and little pieces of bread. Carbs are helpful bc they provide energy, are easily digested, and can also absorb nauseous juices which could help settle the stomach. I've always had good luck giving simple carbs if/when they're sick. Hope your kiddo feels better soon!

| 24 hours seems so long mine only says 12. When Callie was having her IBD issues they said with hold food and water for 12 hours and I could not with hold the water it felt cruel. I just didn't let her drink to much at one time.

| Okay, I have recently went through this so maybe I can offer you some help. Chloe randomly started vomiting last week and it was the middle of the night when my vet was closed so I called an emergency vet hospital. Their instructions were to give her 1/4 tablet of Pepcid AC for her body weight of 3 pounds. I followed these instructions and her vomiting stopped immediately, she didn't vomit again afterwards. The next day though, she got diarrhea. My vet told me it is okay to feed rice with boiled chicken or potato and boiled chicken. I personally can't starve Chloe, I feel extremely guilty. She didn't want to eat but when she did, I gave her small amounts. She also gave me Flagyl and her diarrhea went away right after the first dose. I continued giving her Benebac probiotic for the next couple days and now everything is okay. I hope your baby feels better soon.

| ZoE had a bad bout of gastroenteritis last year with vomiting and bloody diarrhea. I couldn't believe how quickly she went downhill. I took her to the emergency vet late at night because I was terrified I'd wake to a dead dog if I waited until the morning for her vet to open. Even after treatment at the ER she still needed IV fluids at the follow up appt the next day with her vet. With that experience in mind, when her vet says to withhold food for 24 hours and let her stomach settle, I'm doing it! It's just difficult because she doesn't understand why she's not being fed & treated as usual, she just thinks shes being punished and gives me a sad look with those eyes. Im happy to report that Zo had a tiny meal at 7am and kept it down, so received another tiny meal around noon, and now she'll be getting dinner in a few minutes!

| an upset tummy is often not immediately distinguishable from pancreatitis. In cases of pancreatitis it can be life threatening and withholding food allows the pancreas to rest. Withholding food for a meal or two isn't cruel, and in fact it is often the best treatment to make the dog feel better.

| Just seeing this now, and I am very happy to read that ZoE is improving, keeping a little food down. I know what you mean about withholding food being hard when those big, sweet eyes are looking at you. We had to fast Teddy for a day twice because of ailments. It took a lot of distractions to keep him happy (and we had to feed Max out of his sight).

| Also, I hate withholding breakfast and water on surgery days. That is the worst!

| My pups have been fasted many times for tummy troubles. They get over it. Not my favorite thing to do, but it is hecessary, esp. for Ellie. ETA: I do not follow my vet's every word and thought. But once you have a pup with severe tummy trouble or pancreatitis...you stop feeling too guilty and just do it.

| After three bouts of pancreatitis I take Zoey in immediately if she barfs more than two times. We just went through this last week. Dr said we caught it very early and she didn't suffer too much. She was on IV both fri and again on sat. By mom she was back to normal. I had been giving her NOFAT treats and he said no more. I asked about Cherrios since she gets a treat if she comes when called. He said that was ok. So now she is on RC Gastro Low fat canned/kibble. I had been giving her Hills canned at 3.5% since she was tired of eating RC. Dr said she had me trained running around trying to find something she wouldn't turn up her nose to. He was so right. Now, I am in charge. Eat the RC or wait until dinner.

They both picked up a weird virus once that made them vomit for 24 hours, first Teddy and then Max a day later. They couldn't even keep water down, but they were running around like nothing was wrong. Glad it only lasted a day, but that was one time when it was best to give their tummies a rest.
