| Cushing's Disease?? :( Hi everyone, I was hoping that someone can help me with an issue my yorkie is having. A couple of months ago, I noticed a hard little bump on his back right above his back legs...it doesn't seem to hurt him or bother him at all so I didn't think anything of it. Then I noticed a really dry spot on his stomach which I thought may be due to the fact that it is now winter here. After a few weeks, I noticed that the spot was getting darker and also, more spots were starting to show up and they're all really dry. He KEEPS licking it...I try to stop him whenever I see him but I'm not with him every second of every day so he probably still does it. Now the spots are pretty much black...I have been trying to research this nonstop because my vet is out of town. At first I thought it was hot spots and I bought a medicated shampoo online (Amazon ) I've only used it twice but it hasn't seemed to make any difference yet. So I kept researching and I think it may be Cushing's Disease I was wondering if anyone knows any natural cures for this because I don't like forcing him to take a bunch of drugs with chemicals I can't even pronounce. I found this online, has anyone heard of it? http://www.petwellbeing.com/products...glands#reviews It said that Cushing's Disease usually starts around 6 years old and up and he just turned 6 last month. I will attach a picture of his stomach to show the spots I'm talking about...I'm hoping some of you really knowledgable yorkie owners can help me out!!! http://i62.tinypic.com/bf19br.jpg <-- Picture |

| Your photo did not come up for me. I would not assume that it is Cushings. Could be a number of things, including a staph infection unrelated to another illness. Max had black spots on his undercarriage that required an antibiotic to clear up. See your vet. Wylie's Mom has experience with Cushings and allergies. I'm sure she will comment tomorrow.

| My girl (now past) got Cushing's Disease at age 10 y/o. When she was diagnosed as having cushing's there were no spots, however, at age 14 y/o she started to get round sores on her back, 7 of them, and was loosing hair where the sores were. She had patches of bald spots, poor sweet baby looked like a mess. My vet said it was related to cushings. She was given meds, she / I were very lucky, the sores cleared up with-in 4 months and her hair grew back. These sores were not on her stomach, only on her back and both sides. As maximo stated it could be a staph infection, my past pups had staph infections and it was on their stomach. When your vet goes out of town do they not have an alternate vet that can be used? In any case, you need to have a vet check this out.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Wondering why this skin issue is making you think of Cushings - are there other symptoms or something? It could just be pyoderma (staph intermedius), which is treated w/ oral Simplicef, usually for up to 30 days. You'd need to go the vet and get a skin smear. The skin issue in and of itself doesn't sound like Cushings to me. Btw, Cushings can start even earlier than 6...my Wylie got it around 4 or so. Are there any other symptoms like hair loss, frequent drinking/peeing, weight gain/pot belly, hind leg weakness, "old eyes" appearance, recurrent ear/skin issues, lethargy, heat intolerance....etc...?

| It looks like a staph infection, in which case he'll need a course of antibiotics, or possibly a yeast infection, in which case he'll need a fungicide. Either way, he is uncomfortable and suffering. Take him to the vet! If your vet is out of town, take him to another vet. For initial relief of his discomfort, this should not be an expensive vet visit.

A vet is a specialist in health care and just because we cannot pronounce the names of certain drugs does not mean they are bad for us. Please take your dog to the vet. Your are not forcing him to take chemicals. You, as a responsible pet owner, are showing your love to him by getting a professional opinion and professional treatment. If it's a cost issue, then do some research and you will find assistance via some shelters, vet surgeries, etc. We must not let our pride or ignorance stand in the way of our pets health. Please come back and let us know what the vet says as we here at YT are not vets. | |
