| Spay questions and freaking out Lola is getting spayed on Thursday. I'm freaking out about it, my cousin's dog is the last one who had anesthesia for anything (dental) and she nearly died because the vet ODed her on pain medicine, didn't have the reversal meds, and didn't tell us what was going on (O idk why she's not waking up, give her more time) after an hour we decided to rush her to the ER vet. ER vet told us about the OD, the vet who did it still won't admit they did anything wrong and it took my cousin 6 months to get them to write off the dental bill (dental was around $1,000 and so was the ER vet). Her dog is close to 40lbs, Lola wouldn't have survived that type of situation. I've been with my vet for about 15 years, he spayed my poodles and removed a lipoma on one of them. I trust him but I'm still freaking out. I told him about the OD and he was horrified, he said he can't guarantee much but he can guarantee he won't OD her. My questions: 1. WWYD? The vet wants Lola to stay over night, they close at night for 12 hours. A vet tech stays in an apartment over the vet's office and checks on the animals periodically. I don't want to leave Lola, the vet said I can sign a paper saying I took her against medical advisement, I want to do it but my mom is insisting it's a bad idea. (Lola is my dog, I'm paying for the spay and I'm an adult) One of my concerns with leaving her is she's really weird about going to the bathroom, she won't go in front of people including me. She can and has held it for over 12 hours. There's a possibility she'll go in the cage after they leave and I'm afraid of her laying in it. 2. How drugged will she be the first night? 3. I know a lot of you use onesies to keep them from licking, this won't really work for me because I don't know when she goes to the bathroom. Are there any other good alternatives? Long t-shirt? Belly band? |

| first you can get the name of the anesthesia your vet uses to make sure it is a quality brand. what i have read is if they cheap out on that kind of product can also lead to issues as well as not administering the correct dosage. that did help ease my fears when i was having cedric neutered as I was very very nervous my first small breed. take a deep breath and try to relax as it is best if your baby is spayed for her health and so on so you really have to go through with it. the more you work yourself up the worse it will be for you both and she may sense that. did you explain to them about her potty preference of not going in front of anyone? you are the adult and your mother's advice is nice to have but in the end it is your decision. when cedric was neutered he did not stay overnight. but boys and girls are different in the whole scenario. a cone......her size will be best it sounds like to keep her from licking and she may not but better safe than sorry. wishing you and Lola the best.......for her to have a safe and successful procedure.

| If you trust your vet them I would go by his recommendation of an overnight stay. They might like to monitor afterward and knowing a vet tech is right there seems very reasonable to me. A spay while more invasive than a neuter is still pretty routine as is a dental. It's inexcusable that your cousins dog almost died from a dental! How could her vet not had the reversal drugs available! The first night after a spay they are still pretty out of it because the drugs are still being metabolized by the liver. But that's not a bad thing since it will help keep her quiet and relaxed. The vet tech can monitor her temperature, check respiration etc and relay any concerns or issues to your vet. Instead of worrying about bringing her home try to take comfort in the fact that she will be well monitored. Personally, I like the idea of the vet wanting an overnight stay As for the onsie idea don't worry yourself too much. I don't think that a belly and would be comfortable on an incision. Plus the fresh air is good for healing. Just keep an eye on her and limit her jumping. Sounds like you have a great vet and put her care in his hand, follow his directions for aftercare.

| It sounds like the tech is sleeping upstairs. No better than having somebody come check at midnight. I would bring mine home. Ecollar if you can't do a onesie.. The time it takes to recover from the meds is highly variable based on what is used.

| Make sure you get the pre surgery blood work. As long as there is no complications there is no reason she needs to stay over night. This collar works great The Kiss-E Collar. Sammy had to barrow Callie's for a few weeks and he could do all normal things with it and was still a happy little guy.

| The anastesia he uses is one listed on the sticky thread, I don't remember which. I haven't told them about her potty issues, I will when I drop her off. My issue with her staying over night is I don't think she'll be closely monitored. She'll probably just be checked before they leave, before the tech goes to bed, and when they open, maybe one other time during the night. She had the prespay blood work and the yearly wellness blood work (like heartworm), everything came back good. Thanks everyone |

| I would talk to the vet about taking her home. I would think if they do the spay early enough in the am, she'd be awake enough to go home in the evening so you could keep an eye on her there. If you do take her home early, you may want to request pain meds for her. |

| The vet's office where Max was neutered wanted to keep him overnight. They did not have anyone right there monitoring the dogs. I refused and the vet insisted. I planned to show up before they closed and demand my pup. However, Max screamed his way out of there by 4 pm. I think the primary concern is keeping the pet quiet when they come home. I would also have an emergency vet number and directions handy if needed.

| Sorry, I see Jodi and others detailed why the vets like to keep them overnight. I wanted to add relative to potty concerns, Max believed that the only place he could potty was his pad at home. That is why he was screaming. He needed to go. When we got home, he peed a lake. Then he was fine.

| I took mine home when she was spayed. She was very young and timid and she went right to sleep. My boys also did well when neutered. I had it easy I suppose.

Lola will pee in places other than her potty pad at home, but only if she's desperate and no one is around. That's why I think she might pee in the cage when no one is around. There are 2 ER vets within 15 minutes, including the one we had to take my cousin's dog to. Quote:

I would be ok with leaving her if someone were really going to watch her. The tech will be sleeping upstairs, so she'll probably only check on the dogs a few times. They're going to call tomorrow to give me details, so I'll ask again how much care they get over night. | |||

| I talked to someone at the vet's office. They're checked 2-3 times at night, it's up to the tech. Walked once before they leave and once in the morning, she didn't know what to say about Lola's pee issue. She should be almost completely back to normal before they leave at 8. They don't feed them anything (so Lola would go about 36hrs without food, that makes me nervous, she's done it before and gets noticeably weaker). I really think I'm going to pick her up. I bought a kong inflatable cone. |

| Zoey came home in a onesie the same day. I set up an enclosure for us, yes us, to sleep in. It was harder on me then on her. She was was back to herself in a couple of days. Best of luck to you and your little one.
