| I saw this thread and bought coconut oil. I love it, but I was wondering if yorkies could be allergic to it?? It's organic and I've used VERY little on Carmel and my bf is telling me to stop using weird stuff on him.

| Maybe use the peanut oil instead in his food. It's very good for the skin and coat.

| My sister got some of the Nutiva coconut oil from GNC for her boyfriend's old hound dog. She is having some Major skin issues. He wiped it all over her a couple of weeks ago and my sister told me today that her skin is already looking better. |

Coconut Oil has been around and in use for centuries. Just bc BF doesn't know about it doesn't make it weird... lol.

| My opinion won't be popular, but it wouldn't be the first time. ![]() It's a food, so in moderation there shouldn't be an issue. MCTs may be great, but that is no reason to overuse it. It is still a saturated fat (animal or not). There are still a lot of questions surrounding its use. There are many vets and veterinary nutritionists that don't recommend it. Ellie gets it daily...but only because it's an ingredient in her kibble. Her veterinary nutritionist did not tell me to add this to her diet when feeding homecooked, even knowing that Ellie is a pancreatitis patient, and she would know much more about it than most people online. If it is being given orally, particularly to dogs with health issues, only a vet or veterinary nutritionist should make that decision. It's still an oil and the people/sites recommending it online are not veterinary nutritionists. There is still a potential for damage and a licensed professional should be consulted before using it. Even adding a little bit to food for healthy pups isn't something everybody should just start to do. Kibble and canned food have fat in them already. Adding another fat source, animal or plant, is still increasing fat content. When doing that, it is "always" best to talk to your pup's vet about whether or not this is advisable. Putting it on cuts and such, hey, if that's what a pup's vet tells an owner to do, it shouldn't be a problem. As long as it has been approved by a pup's vet for that particular dog. Just because one vet might say it online doesn't make it right... I have talked to my pup's vet about what to use on those types of things because IMO that is a call that a vet should make. They are trained in controlling infections, not me. We use Neosporin here. All that to say - ask your vet, especially if there is an underlying health condition because it very likely is NOT okay in a lot of cases.

| I do not rinse my boys with a mixture of water and coconut oil. I will grease them down full strength like a massage about two hours before I bathe them. Then they get a bath with Mane and Tail shampoo and conditioner that is in a green label bottle. They are gorgeous afterwards, and I do not have any tangle issues once they are dry. This has taken care of their skin conditions that they had when I got them. They are also on a flea and tick once a month preventative, but every once in a while I will find one on them when we get back from walks. If you touch a little bit of CO to the flea it is dead instantly! No need to chase the flea all over one of them. |

| A fiend of mine made Banana Foster, and sauteed the bananas in coconut oil. OMG!!! It was really good ...the bananas with the Kahlua over greek yogurt. (She used yogurt for me; everyone else had it over icecream.)

| Yorkie Yakker | It was recommended for yeast infection and also for any skin problems. I give mine a 1/4 t. twice and day in her food, it really seems to help. We got Jarrow Extra Virgin Organic Coconut Oil from out pet store. |

| Nice! I was just goint to bump this thread to share a story. Uni itches a lot, esp on her shoulders. I have been parting her hair there, and rubbing in a bit of CO. It made her red spots go away overnight, but she is still itching. Anyway, it makes her a bit greasy looking, but I don't mind. A kid came in the shop and said, "is she dirty? bc she looks dirty but she smells really good." I LOL's and told him its CO, and he's like, "oh ok. That's ok then."As for me, adding it to some of my foods, but not trying very hard to eliminate all other fats from my diet, I think I have gained weight.

| I'm a major CocoTherapy coconut oil person! They are the best tasting (and I've tasted many other brands). The coconut oil comes from their own farm, their own manufacturing facility -- not like other private label brands. Their reviews on thier facebook page is ALL 5 stars -- check it out: CocoTherapy? - Reviews | Facebook Check out thier difference here: CocoTherapy - The CocoTherapy Difference Sorry for being such a fanatic, but I don't settle for less when it comes to my babies! |
