Coconut Oil
 
I've been reading a little about Coconut Oil and its benetifs.
What are you thoughts on coconut oil... good and bad?
If you use it, what do you use it for and what brand?
Where could I get some if I decide to?

I heard that coconut oil does wonder for hair growth and maintaining healthy hair. I got a perm which killed my hair and needed to cut few inches so i scoued the contry to find some (very hard to get them in korea...) and i used it for few months until it mysteriously disappeared...(my theory is that my mom came to visit me and threw it ou t thinking its old because it turns to thick white milky substance when its cold)

From my experience i dont know if it did anything for the hhair growth but it definately made my hair feel silkier... Much better than what olive oil did.

I also heard of health benefits as well.... I didnt drink or ut it in my food because i wanted to use it on my hair... I plan on getting back to it when iamback in canada since its cheaper and easier to get

Riley has been on Clavamox since last Tues. night... His ears/top part....get a teeny bit red and blotchy inside... it comes and goes. It feels a little hot....I was wondering if maybe it would soothe them if I rubbed some cocunut oil on them. I have an appt. to take him in for a re-check.

I see that They sell Nutiva at GNC... I have a GNC 1-block from me, here at work.

Nutiva is a great brand, it is what I use. It is organic and cold pressed which is what you want. I give my two about 1/4 t. on their morning kibble. I have also used it as a deep conditioning treatment on their coats. It is supposed to be really good for hotspots and skin ailments. I bet it would make Riley's ears feel better. I also read on your thread about Riley's ear problems where someone used it in the ears. I am going to start doing that too, just to keep on top of things (Bogie my biewer is prone to ear infections)

I buy EV Coconut oil that I cook with from Whole Foods. It has been helpful in managing active symptoms of Daisy's IBD so I will add it to her food when she is flaring. I have not thought of using it for a hotspot, but Barney is getting the beginnings of one as he does every spring so I will give it a try.

I use Nutiva coconut oil topically. Teddy had strange bug bites on his chest last year and the coconut oil cleared them up in 2 days. More recently, Max had a little "road rash" on his hind quarters (from sitting when we stop on our walks) and the coconut oil cleared it up overnight.

If used orally, exercise caution. It is a fat and probably should not be used for dogs with pancreatitis or other conditions that require a low fat diet.

I use it for to calm down Lily's skin irritations. I also use it on (my) Riley's cracked pads. I ordered it from Amazon.

Cocotherapy is made for dogs, I've had good results from customers that have bought it.

They sell both an oil and chips.

We love Coconut Oil. Our Rocco:aimeeyork has skin issues and I use it topically on him. I give both dogs about 1/4t daily. While Marlee :aimeeyorkwas pregnant I would rub her belly with it...she loves her tummy rubbed! I had also heard it helps to prevent fleas, but I did not find that to be true.

I have used it topically on both my girls, esp during the winter to condition their hair. I have also been giving 1tsp daily on Charlee's food, as she is on a low fat (raw) diet, and I wanted to add some additional fat back in. According to my holistic vet, plant based fats are good for dogs with pancreatitis...it is the animal fats that you want to avoid. I have heard that you can gradually increase the amount you give until the dog begins having loose bowels...then back off to the previous dose.

I went and got the Nutiva Coconut Oil from GNC......

I had rubbed a little on his upper/outter ears night before last but last night, I sat in the bathroom and cleaned Riley's ears out with it..... with a cotton ball. - He Looooooooooooooved it!!!! :thumbup: :thumbup:
After I brought him back into the living room, he actually went back into the bathroom and sat there whining for me to do it some more!!

What a Huuuge switch from just a week ago, when he would not let me go near his ears!!!! =)

They still look pink inside though...one ear moreso than the other.
He is on Clavamox until next Tuesday..... and he is supposed to go back for a "Re-Check" next week.

I was advised not to use coconut oil on foot pads because it would soften the pads and make them more tender, susceptible to injury.

I have used extra virgin coconut oil internally for yeast and it helped. It wasn't a miracle cure but it worked. I am not a fan of greasy stuff externally, as it attracts dirt.

My one pup could not digest chips... came out looking the same way they went in, not as white though, lol! (almost caused a blockage:eek:)
