| whelping Lots of questions here... Ahia i am sure is pregnant. i have been looking at lots of web sites in order to educate my self as much as possible before the time arrives to deliver. some sites say to let them eat the afterbirth. some say no because it gives them nasty diarreha. what is best (in you all's opinion). and dewclaws. what is the purpose of clipping this? and .... (oh guish i dont' ever want to go thru this again. my nerves are rattled.) how long after giving birth can we spay. oh and is it necessary to clamp before we tie the cord? can i do without that expense? those things are expensive. but if i need them i will gladly get them. any thing i need to get me and her thru this. and since she is so young (just over 10 mo.) how will she be with the puppies? will she try to run with them like she does her little teddy bear? and the teddy bear has a squeekie in the tummy..will she try to squeek the puppy and kill it?

| The after birth I dont know I still haven't decided Lilli is do in 3 weeks so I better get on the ball but I still dont know if she is pregnant or not she is showing all of signs but gaining no weight so I am wanting to take her to the vet on the 5th to have a x ray done. But the dewclaws it a good idea because they can be torn by catching it on furniture and alot of other stuff the only reason they would need it is for hunting so if you are not going to use them for hunting then I would go ahead and cut them off. If you have never docked a tail then it might be to hard on you the first time. I do mine so I dont have to take them to the vet a get them exposed to any diseases because the best time to dock and remove declaws is at 3 days old.Hope this helps. Kristi |

| I have heard alot of breeders say that they let their females eat just one afterbirth which is enough to get the milk going. Some do not let their girls eat any at all and have no problems, I personally would just allow her to eat the first one. How much does your girl weigh? Have you had any x-rays done to see how many puppies to expect and to see the size just to make sure your girl will be able to deliver them safely.. Since this is her first litter I would do the x-rays they can be done after 56 days. My vet charges 46.00 for the x-rays and about the same for ultrasound. I would also get dewclaws done for the same reasons Kristi mentioned. I think the procedure shouldn't cost much I got my pups tail and dewclaws done for 8.50 per puppy. (not as bad as I thought) I don't think she will treat it like a toy since her motherly instinct should kick in once puppies are here, make sure you have her with u 24/7 close to her due date just to make sure she does good. KristiC question I saw you do your own dewclaws/tail can you please let me know how you do it. I have seen it done but know people do it differntly. My e-mail is jcavazos25@rgv.rr.com if you prefer to discuss this through e-mail? |

| Oh my goodness. WOW! Idenise, I have been following your thread from before of "thinking that Ahia might be pregnant", so now you got confirmation did you? Oh wow - Now this is one area that I have not a clue on. I in the beginning decided that I never wanted to breed Schatzie so never read up on it. Now I wish I did, ha ha... Well, I really wish you and Ahia a happy healthy go of it. I can only imagine how nervous you may be. Please keep us posted throughout this all - I am quite interested in following Ahia's story of her first litter.

| WOW PUPPIES, YOUR SO LUCKY.. I LOVE THE LITTLE ONES BUT ON A SERIOUS NOTE. I WISH THE BEST FOR YOU & HER, I HOPE EVERYTHING GOES SMOOTH, I MYSELF WOULD TAKE HER TO THE VET TO DO ULTRASOUND , TO KIND OF HAVE AN IDEA OF HOW MANY PUPPIES TO EXPECT, I WOULD ALSO TAKE THEM TO VET TO GET TAILS DOCK & DEW CLAWS REMOVE, I WOULD BE AFRAID TO HURT THEM, BUT PLEASE DON'T LET ME BEEN A CHICKEN DISCOURAGE YOU FROM DOING IT YOUR SELF, IF YOU CAN KEEP THEM AT HOME Instead OF TAKING THEM OUT, THEM I'M SURE IS BETTER FOR THEM. GOOD LUCK KEEP US POSTED .. |

| thanks guys for the advice and encouragement. i haven't been back to the vet for the conformation yet. the appointment is next monday. but i can feel she has something in there. she weighed 8.4 lbs last monday at the vets office. this whole thing is scaring the livin' daylights out of me. I wasn't this rattled when i had my own. this was all a pure accident. i dont know when it happened. we were so careful. (had to have been when my husband had them). so......... i am going to go by the time she came out of her heat cycle. which would be the first of feb. all the docking and cutting will be done by the vet (i'm a bigger chicken). i think i have to bite the cord.....oh no that is her that does that .... i am so rattled about this whole thing.

| no , what they do to the ears is shave the hair off of them. so they will have strength to stand. Ahia's ears had a hard time standing. they were heavy and i kept taking the hair off of them. they are just not comming around to our way of thinking. when they look you in the eyes with that yorkie kind of look you really don't care if they stand or not.

| Oh no not the ears lol no way!!! I don't think a ultrasound would do you any good, well it would tell you if the puppies are alive. As for the x-rays I would wait until it's almost time doing it too early wouldn't give you a good count since the skulls would not show too good on the x-rays and you wouldn't want to expose your pups to too many x-rays. Do you have any pictures of the mommy to be? Hope everything goes great for you both!!! Good Luck and keep us posted!!! Smiles, Myra |

| KristC: please advise on how to dock tail and remove dew claws... what is your technique and how much to take off the tail??? I heard that if you just tie rubber band around their tail that it would eventually fall off. Is this true???? |

| The rubberband thing is true but would expose the puppies to infection. They told me not to cut into the black you should leave a little brown on the tip, but people have different opinions about length. Kristi has a good method. I have seen it done where they tie finger bandage around the tail the use forcepts to clamp and twist it off. I guess I prefer my vet get that taken care off I am a big chicken when it comes to things like that.... Smiles, Myra |
