| My yorkie puppy has diarrhea w/blood and mucous. HELP! I got Sophie about 3 weeks ago and have been to the vet 3 times already. The first time was for hypoglicemia, the vet did a fecal test, and the test came back negative. She had no parasites or anything, she was doing well once they got her to eat the food from the vet,(ID) they gave me a few cans and informed me she would have watery bowels while eating it.( about 2 1/2 weeks ago) She liked this food very much for a few days, then she stopped eating it, the pet store I bought her from told me to start feeding her boiled chicken and rice, I came home boiled some chicken and fed it to her, she ate it up right away, she ate it again once more and wouldn't eat it again so i made white rice, once again she only ate it twice then she wouldn't eat it anymore. (At this point she had not touched her dry food, and maybe ate her canned food the pet store recommended once) I took her back to the vet about a week after her hypoglicemic attack to get her vaccines and to get her checked out, the pet store seemed to think she had kennel cough (although aside from a sneeze here or there she wasn't showing any signs, pet store told me they were convinced it was kennel cough and to even lie and say she had been coughing) I told the vet ( she had gained a lb in a week) to check her out for kennel cough there were no signs so they said it could be a bacterial infection and they gave me 5 days worth of metronidizol (sp?) and they gave me another kind of dog food called AD that was suppose to make her bowels harden up, at this point it was just diarrhea no mucus or blood, with no surprise she wouldn't touch the ad, but started eating the boiled chicken, then the next day she stopped eating completely, she had been on antibiotics for a day, i called the vet they said to give her baby food or boiled hamburger meat. She loved the baby food and she ate that for a few days then i got her back on the boiled chicken, she has been eating the boiled chicken for about a week now and finished her antibiotics about 5 days ago, she was back to being a puppy, chewing on everything etc, but aside from one hard stool, her stool has been either diarrhea or very soft. Last night she started having chronic diarrhea with mucus and blood, very foul smelling i took her out about 4 times. I read on here that the chicken could be the culprit, so i ran out this morning to find pure canned pumpkin which is nowhere in this area, (to harden the stool, apparently a shortage happened about a yr ago, and it won't be here untill end of this month) the only thing i could find was pumpkin pie filling which i did not give her b/c it says on here not to, but i switched her to boiled hamburger meat for today. She has been acting normal, eating, drinking, chewing etc, her belly is very full now maybe even bloated? I gave her nutri cal this morning and have been giving her pedialyte mixed with water as well, she is resting now, but I'm not sure if she's dehydrated or not. I have no idea what to do, and am at my witts end. I don't know if she has some type of virus or it's just the inconsistent diet I have been forced to give her in fear of another hypo attack. Has anyone else had this problem??? Any advice?? |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | First, welcome to YT . What is her age? In addition to the possible bloating, is her tummy making gurgly, squishy noises? Did the vet check for giardia in the fecal? You may want do yet another fecal, and check again for giardia -- giardia is notorious for hiding under the scope, and it's not uncommon to need 2 fecals to find giardia. If she is a puppy, I'd recommend you bring her back in to the vet ASAP - bc puppies will act/play/seem fine - and then can go down *very* fast due to dehydration w/ diarrhea. I would also (no matter the issue) pick up Benebac Paste from PetCo (Petsmart doesn't carry it). Benebac is a high-potency probiotic paste that can be helpful in re-populating the sm intestine w/ necessary probiotics. I get the 'small animal/ferret' size, and keep Benebac in my ER kit, for the doggies, at all times. Personally, I'd be very cautious about giving any vaccines until this issue is resolved. Most vets won't give vaccines to a dog who is having diarrhea.

| Oh I am so sorry that you have been going through all of this with your new puppy. PLEASE~Do NOT believe anything that a Pet Shop tells you to do! They are horrible places that sell puppies from mills and your little one is no exception. She could have any number of illnesses that have been missed at your vet. Kennel Cough does not cause bloody foul smelling diarrhea! If she had been having blood and mucus in her poop since yesterday this is an emergency and you need to take her to the ER vet now. I have no idea what is going on with her but it seems to me that you are not getting the answers that you need to have a health puppy. Please take her immediately to your nearest ER for treatment. Once she is on the road to recovery I would demand a refund from the pet shop and payment of all medical bills.

| Did she have any vaccinations before the pet store sold her? How old is she. Don't mix the pedialyte with water. With all the different foods you have thrown at her could very well have set up one heck of a gastro upset. It should be boiled chicken very small amount and RICE large amount of rice. Fecal screening at the VEt most of the time don't find parasites but there could very well be that they missed it. Ask about the wormer Panacur. Having bought her from a pet store she came from a puppymill. Who knows what her problems may be or what she may have brought with her to the pet store or what virus she may have picked up there. Check around your area for a good Vet very familiar with Yorkies in particular. They do have breed specific problems. |

| First, welcome . Wow, this sure is a mess isn't it? The changes of diet, stress , and all other factors can contribute to the stools problems . The fact that she is a pet store puppy does not help it either but it sounds like you did not know any better before getting her. You need to read more and catch up on a lot of good information here. It may be other parasites, such as coccidia or gyardia , these also cause mucous diarrhea and may not show up on a regular stool sample. Unfortunately your best bet may be taking her back to the vets once again since you may endanger your puppy trying to treat her at home. If she is dehydrated , her skin will be "tacky" and so will be her gums. If she is dehydrated she will need not only oral liquids , but she may need some injected fluids or subcutaneous as well. But one thing that concerns me a lot is the fact that you are a very inexperienced owner and puppies dehydrate and decline so fast . Please consider taking her back to the vet, or to another vet from a hospital that can run more tests and give you a sure answer. I wish you all the best. I know other members will be answering here and you will learn a lot from being a part of YT . XOXO

| She was born Jun 28 2010, she had been vaccinated heres a list of her vaccines dpv 8/6 bordatella 8/2 da2ppvcv 8/16 parvo 7/26 and then i got her vaccinated a week and half ago with the distemper 3 wk (that is what the vet receipt says.... I think it was 4 vaccines in one, ddvp? I can't find the information right now. She seems to be very hungry, I just gave her a little more meat. She won't touch the rice, she only ate the rice once and that was about 2 weeks ago. Should i just feed her water? I thought pedialyte was good to help dehydration? Also yesterday I added a bit of green beans bc i was worried she was getting too much protien and she ate them, could that have added to the problem? |

| Also would the Metronidazole that the vet perscribed and she took take care of the giardia, if she had it? |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Sorry you are having so many problems with your new baby. I got Cali from a back yard breeder and she was so sick the first 6 months. She had several hypoglycemic attacks, coccidia, kennel cough and many trips to er vet and regular vet. She was a terrible eater. I had to hand feed her every 3-4 hours at first. Now at the age of 5 she will eat anything. The main thing is to make sure she is eating and drinking and to get her to the vets right away if she isn't. I agree she needs another fecal test. The metronidazole can be used to treat Giardia. The foster pup I had had giardia and the shelter put her on Panacur but it didn't seem to work so they switched her to metronidazole and it cleared up pretty quick. I would try and limit her diet to avoid tummy upsets from the switching of foods. I would get her rechecked as soon as possible. Please keep us posted.

| Thanks for the replies everyone, I just spoke to the er vet and it seems like she may have a parasite, maybe that would explain her bloated belly and being so hungry. Im going to take her to the vet first thing in the morning for a fecal test. Before I got Sophie I wasn't aware of the pet store situation, this pet store swears to be different, and say they have personal relationships with their breeders? Although the vet still has found nothing wrong with her so I can't completely blame them yet. |

Once she is better and if you are curious about where she came from you can post her breeder information and there are a few members that will be able to help. But that is not the important issue going on now. Hopefully you will get some answers today. Please let us know how she is doing and what they say. Oh and I forgot yesterday Welcome to YT!

| Sophie and I just got back from the vet. She said she was maybe boarderline dehydrated, which was a good thing so the fluid under the skin wasn't neccesary. They are doing another fecal test (I will get the results tomorrow) and gave me a dewormer (Panacur liquid) and Tylosin powder to add to her meals. The vet wants me to start feeding Sophie dog food, since the dog food the pet store got me to buy has garlic in it (that she won't eat anyway) and I was told that garlic can be toxic to dogs, so I stopped giving it to her awhile ago. I am thinking about trying wellness I hear great things about that brand and want to start gradually incorporating it into her diet. Sophie is still acting like herself, biting, chewing running around, peeing everywhere. The breeder is from Arkansas, it's called Elite Puppies. Anyone heard of them? |

| glad that she's better; you can feed her a bland diet for now chicken and rice or turkey and oatmeal; and eventually switch to a wet food first since it's easier to digest; wellness has a simple solution line; with duck, salmon or lamb and rice. it should be good for dogs with sensitive stomachs. they also have it in dry; so later on you can add that to the wet food. always use probiotic to help the GI system; animal essential plant enzymes and probiotics. good luck

| hello. i am so very sorry to hear of all these problems you're having with your little baby. nika had similar problems as a little baby. (she was around 12 weeks old) it took 3 different vet's offices and 5 different doctors to discover she had coccidea detectable by fecal exam. (we had fecal test before and it was negative but a couple days later another one tested positive) later in her life she had this problem and it turned out to be pancreatitis, detectable by bloodwork. hopefully the doctor has ruled these out. good luck with your little baby! i will keep you both in my thoughts and prayers and hope this all works out! ~ hugs ~
