Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | Kicking water about and not eating much. Hi everyone, hope you are all having a good week! I have two things I hope you can help me with. 1. Poppy has started to kick about and paddle in her water bowel. She uses one paw and kicks the water out ... I have wood floors and the water is just getting EVERYWHERE. When I see or hear her start to do it I say LEAVE IT! in a deep voice and she does. But the second Im out the room she goes swimming again! I was thinking of using one of those water bottles for rabbits and attaching it to the side of her pen, but would she get enough water from it? I dont know what to do... Its not like I can take it from her because I dont want her to get dehydrated! 2. For the past few days she hasnt been eating much.. she is her normal self and has given me no reason to think she is ill. She will try to eat my other dogs food but wont eat her own. My other dog is 13 yo and is on senior food, will this harm her in any way? I havnt changed her food but for some reason she just wont eat it. I got the same food as my other dog is on (not the senior version) and mixed a little bit into her puppy food to try and get her to eat it, its kinda worked but shes still not eating 4 meals a day like she should be. Its not that she isnt hungry either, because I tried her with some treats and she ate those.. I also tried her with some cheese which she ate so Im confused. Is there anything you can suggest? Thanks!

| Bilbo does the kicking water thing too. I think he does it because either he's hot or because he thinks there is something at the bottom of the bowl or because he just wants to play in the water. I keep the dish on a tray with a raised side (like a cafeteria tray) which makes it easier to clean up. He does the same thing with his kibble sometimes. They have water dishes with a jug that dispense into a small bowl, although I don't know if a rabbit waterer with a tube would work for a dog. I wouldn't worry too much about the not eating thing, as long as Poppy doesn't seem sick. If you are too concerned, her checked at the vet. But I think they go through spurts where they don't eat. Maybe she's developing into a picky eater. I don't think the senior food would be good for an active dog, since it may not have enough calories or protein. What I would suggest is: go to the vet, if she gets a clean bill of health, either wait her out or change food. If you free feed, maybe change that for awhile until Poppy gets back on her food. | Is Poppy trying to put water in her food? When I was growing up, I had a terrier mix do this. We realized to add water to her food and she was quite happy.

I had a thought... maybe she can see her reflection in the water and thats what she is pawing at? Im not sure.. I dont give her the senior food what I ment is sometimes I catch her eating it from my other dogs bowel (I do stop her when I catch her) I dont usually leave food in her pen over night but I did last night and it was nearly all gone this morning, so I will see what she is like tomorrow and if shes not eating any better I will make an appointment with the vet. Thanks again.

I mix her dry food with some wet food also. I had a thought that maybe she could see her reflection in the water and that is what she is pawing at.. what do you think? Thanks for responding!

| Get one of the dog water bottles that attach to the wire crate and she will only be able to lick the water out when she needs it. The only solution I have with meal time for her and for your older dog is home cooking. Cook up some ground red meat and add cooked brown rice or wild rice & finely chopped, either snow peas, snap peas or green beans, and carrots. I even add bok-choy. I make up a very large batch of food and freeze in containers. Each container large enough to feed my five for five days. You won't have any problems at all getting them to enjoy meal time I promise!

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | She could be doing it just because it's FUN and cool on her feet. My doxie used to do it, I resorted to having to pick the water up and only giving it to him at certain times a day until he out grew the behavior. If you want to have water out at all times, you might want to see if a raised dish will minimize the behavior, since she won't be able to get her paws in to it quite so easily.

| Dudley USED to this when he was younger...there is a cute little puppy face on the bottom of his water dish, maybe he was trying to get it. THEN after having him in the pool (during this time) we come to realize this.... He loves biting at bubbles, so we noticed when he paws at his water it creates bubbles for him and next thing you know, it's all over I have his bowls on a place mat w/ a rubber back on our wood floor, works great

| Copper has been doing this lately...pawing out water. It is very hot here right now, but it seems as if he does it when I leave for a while. It is almost as if he is either bored or throwing a temper tantrum! Today I had to run to the store and when I came back he had kibble everywhere. Maybe your dog is sending you a message!

Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | Her bowel has a princess crown inside but I didnt think much of it seen as this is the bowel she has always used for her water and she has only started pawing at it the past few days. Anyhoo after mopping the floor twice this morning I thought it may be the crown she was trying to get out.. So I gave her water in a plain bowel, oooh she HATED it! She glared at the boring old plain bowel then ran over and flipped it over Supose she likes her princess bowel LOL For now I have just started unplugging all electrical sockets until I can figure out how to get her to stop... Im also putting a towel under the bowels. Thanks for everyones help!
