| quick question i have a quick question about vaccines. davinci got his 3rd puppy shot on Feb 21 when he was 13.5 weeks old. and then got his rabies shot on March 14th when he was 16.5 weeks old. he is now 19 weeks old (turned 19 weeks today) does he need another puppy shot? i was told that he needs another puppy shot (HDPP) is that right? why? i thought they should only get 3 puppy shots? thanks!!!

| He need one 2-3 weeks ago. Now it has been more than four weeks, so you could titer and try to avoid, could give one more and titer, or could give two more sets four weeks apart. DHPP needs to be given three to four weeks apart ending no sooner than 16 weeks...preferably 18 weeks. Does that help?

i am confused. how many puppy shots is a puppy supposed to get? when should they start and when should they end? if they need to have a shot every 3-4 weeks, then that seems like a lot of puppy shots.

| Some may give the pup shots 2 weeks apart instead. I think I had read that. It isn't really standard though. It isn't the number of rounds that is important. It is the date of start and stop that is. A pup that starts at 6 weeks (way too young) will need at least 4 sets to end up at 16 weeks (if they are given four weeks apart). A very popular schedule is 8, 12, and 16 weeks. Research is showing that ending at 18 weeks is better. Starting later than 6 weeks, esp. for a small dog is a good idea. I like 10, 14, and 18 weeks. Then maybe rabies at 16 weeks (which I'd beg vet to put off til 6 months...). Even two sets at, say, 14 and 18 weeks would probably be just fine as long as pup could be protected that long by owner. Since he is older now, it is probably possible to just give one more. I'd be nervous about doing that, but maybe just titer after?

| i just called the breeder because i couldn't find davinci's paperwork. he had puppy shots at 7 weeks old, 10 weeks old, and i was supposed to give him two more puppy shots at 13 weeks old and another one after that. the breeder didn't want me to give the rabies shot until around 6 months old, or whenever the 2nd set of teeth come in. i got confused because MY VET told me it was time for his rabies shot. that's why it's all messed up now. i am upset with myself for not being more informed. are the vets supposed to give rabies shot that early? when is the best time to give rabies shot? my breeder thinks when the 2nd set of teeth come in.

| It is a confusing topic. Rabies has to be given when your state or county law says it has to be given. It is probably 4 months in CA. Some vets will hold off anyway. It was your vet's responsibility to inform you that waiting from 13 to 19 weeks was too long for DHPP.

| thank you for your help. i am so upset right now. i know i should not listen to anything the vet says. i don't think the vet knows enough about the pet's health, i mean, they know enough to keep pets alive... i never get enough time to ask the vets all my questions. i like him as a person, he is very nice and caring, but... everytime i am in his office, i get to talk to him about 10-15 min. and he says that he always spends too much time with me because he likes me but he gets in trouble with the staff because now his schedule is super behind... ok, i guess this is not the end of the world, but it's just so sad because i thought for sure i would be doing things right with the second dog after having milu and learning through all the mistakes i made with her. nope, i still messed up... now i think i need to look at milu's shot record, maybe she never had the correct shots either...(i already know that my vet gave her the corona virus, he thinks corona virus is fine for small dogs...)

After 8 years I still make mistakes with Ellie constantly. It's okay. Liking your vet as a person is awesome, but if he isn't able to take the time that you need, then maybe somebody else around you is? Ten minutes is pretty average, but it is nearly impossible to have a couple 10 minutes appointments a year and have a great client/patient/vet relationship... Maybe he will let you email him questions and he can answer them at a better time?

i don't take my dogs to get the shots in my vets office anymore because he does not offer puppy shots without the corona virus. so i have to get davinci his shots else where. but i just feel like they are always so busy at my vet's office, i never get to feel comfortable knowing i got the right info. they are constantly distracted by phone calls and the vet is just so booked everyday.

i just don'e understand how 10-15 minutes is enough time, and like i said, that is him spending a lot of time with us. my friend goes to him, and he spends about 5 min with her. that is just crazy. and i know that his staff really guards his time. they always tell me to make an appt with him if i have questions... do vets really give out their email addy?

And some give it to their best clients even if they don't give it to everyone. The same goes for personal phone number, etc. I don't see how there could be any good convo in 5 minutes! But some have appt. every 10 minutes and that includes paperwork, being the pharmacist, etc.

Yen, it was really stressful, in many ways, to move on to a new vet - even when my gut and head knew I wasn't getting the care I wanted -- but once I finally found someone good - it was such a relief.

i guess i am just too worried about it. i feel like if the vet is comfortable giving me his email he would have offered it. but i should stop being a pussy and just ask for his email. lol.
