| I have cut the quik on dogs that I owned before, but so far not my yorkie girls *crossing fingers* I just clip the very tips of their nails off once a week. That way I don't have to guess where the quik is. I agree with what the other poster said, it's better to cut off too little. I just did Missy's today actually. Both the girls stand very nicely for me. I put them up on the counter and they stand very nice and still. I started them the first week they came home. Don't feel bad. You were just being a good Mommy and keeping up with the grooming.

| aww...poor little thing...I've done this to both my boys, and it makes you feel SO badly! I know you feel terrible, but they will forgive you I will hold a tissue on it, with pressure, then I stick my boys' feet in flour when it happens, and it typically stops the bleeding pretty quickly. They do cry, but generally they'll stop hurting soon. I haven't ever had one "gush", but I have had them bleed all over my carpet when they're running around playing after nail trims...was it more of a squirt, or just a constant flow? Just be sure to give your baby lots of cuddles and loves, and they'll be back to normal in no time good luck!

| oh, and it will get better with practice! you'll eventually learn exactly where you need to cut in order to miss the quick, but not have to trim nails every 3 days...I typically will trim about once every 3 to 4 weeks.

| Thanks everyone. I do usually try to cut just the tips off but usually I have someone help me hold him down while I do it because he's so strong, but yesterday I tried to do it on my own. I'm so jealous of those whose yorkies sit nice and still! He freaks out over everything...brushing/combing, teeth brushing (I tried a vibrating toothbrush once...BIG mistake lol), nail clipping. My groomer has to work on him in 10 minute increments because he gets so worked up. He's been like that since puppyhood and no matter what I've tried he is just a spazz.

| I'm sure Jo Jo's nails will be fine and try not to worry. I use a small pair of cat trimmers so I can really see the nail well before I trim them. I try to clip just a little bit off every time I give the girls a bath. Last edited by cory; 03-12-2010 at 09:29 PM. |
