I hurt my baby :( I was trying to cut JoJo's nails and on the very first one I cut too far. He screamed and it was gushing blood! I was so worried because I've never done that before, or knew how much it would bleed if it ever happened. Poor baby. :( So now he only has one short nail, and he won't even come near me now. I put styptic powder on it and so far it has stopped bleeding. I'm still in shock over how much blood there was. Please tell me he won't be in pain for too long. :cry8: |
My very first attempt years ago to clip my Mandy's nails I did the same thing. I rushed to the vet and he comforted me as I was crying. He said it would be OK and not to be too hard on myself. Just watch it for a few days to make sure it is Ok. I now do lots of dogs and am careful but once and a while it does get close. Don't worry your baby will be fine and forgive you soon. ;) |
It took me a long time to be comfortable cutting my babies nails... You have to be very careful... if the nails are black, you have to be ultra careful not to hit the quick!... It can make your baby bleed to death or even get infections... not to scare you or nothing, just be very careful! We put the cornstarch on it if we cut too short, but I havent in years. BETTER TO CUT TOO LONG THAN TOO SHORT!!! Thats what I say. If you are ever in doubt if you cant see the quick, just clip the tip. Other than that, he will be fine... just give him a bit, and he will make up to you. Talk in a sweet voice and give him lots of cuddles. He will forgive you, they always do, and deep down, they know your heart. Ive never had one "gush" though... so I hope you didnt cut it too short, just keep checking to MAKE SURE he isnt still bleeding. If you did cut the quick too short... he might be in pain for a bit, but it will go away. I think the lady who had Lexi might have cut hers way too short, and I am hoping that it grows back, the poor things nail is all cut up way too short... I am sure your baby will be fine though, just keep checking on it, and try making him feel better, and he will love you again in no time. |
Yeah, don't feel bad. He'll get over it pretty quickly. That's unfortunate but not uncommon. Go back to gaining his trust by just holding his paws and not clipping him. Massage them. Later, you can try just cutting off the tips. Better to do that once a week than trying to take too much off. |
Aww poor baby, I've never done that cause I've never actually clipped a dogs nails before, the vet usually does it for me; however we bought a pedipaw trimmer to hopefully prevent things like that. I'm not sure how it works yet, haven't used it but when I do I'll use it on my bigger dog first since she isn't as brittle as our yorkies are. I'm sure he'll forgive you soon, dogs are very forgiving!!;) |

Thanks everyone for making me feel better about it! I actually do have the ones with the guard, but he hates getting his nails cut and he jerked (just like with you, bonbon). And yes, they do forgive quickly...a few minutes later he was in my lap giving me kisses. I think he knew how bad I felt! But I still felt guilty so I ran to PetSmart and bought him a new toy. :p |

Aww, thanks bonbon. :) But it's funny because I swear I never leave the house without coming back with something for him! No matter what store I go to, I ALWAYS have to go down the pet aisle and can't help but buy something lol. He even has his own closet lol! :p |
