| IMO, it depends what you have tried and how bad the problem is. Many people don't have a problem feeding SD and that's fine. I use it for Ellie when I have to. But in a lot of cases it is not necessary a different food could work just as well. Is it complete and balanced? Yes Is it going to negatively affect your dog? I don't know, but it will likely be fine. Are there better foods out there that maybe should be looked at first? IMO, yes.

I can't recommend a canned food because they all seem to have problems (manufacturer, ingredients, quality control) and I'm not keeping up on dog food companies right now. Some kibbles may also work though and you would have a bigger selection. But if I/D is all your pup does well on, then there is really no reason not to feed it. A word on homecooking...I don't normally recommend it because of the time and commitment involved. And I don't have the desire to slave in the kitchen for Ellie and now I don't have the time either, but hey, it's what she does well on, so it's what she gets. Natural Balance could work but I think they are manufacturing at Diamond now...

| I'm going to jump in here and voice my opinion also. I truly believe that most of the medical problems dogs are having are in fact due to commercial dog food, commercial treats, over inoculating and flea and tic meds. Having said that, if someone points out how bad a dog food really is, (and if you look at the ingredients on any bag of science diet you will see the big no-no....BY_PRODUCTS, and if you don't know what that is, look it up!) then do your own research. Also if there is an all natural, SAFE way to help your dog, then why would you even "want" to feed your dog any pet food that is below sub-standard and potentially harmful? If you haven't read any of these (below)...........I strongly suggest you do. If you have read these, and continue to feed sub-standard food to your beloved pet, then your "positive" opinion on this pet food is definately not one that has your pet best interest in mind. When someone just wants to help by giving an honest opinion, I don't see where the negative response represents intelligence. | To Yorkiedaze, Thank-you. I read the Dead Cats and Dogs Used to Make Pet Food. I even run a copy off to read again. It opened my eyes. I am not surprised though. I do read the ingredients list on package but I checked it out again. Thanks again.

My vet recommends the chicken and rice diet as well. I know their are dogs that have to eat I/D but my guys don't like it and this way I get to pamper them with a little home cooking when they are not feeling well.

Then there are the added vitamins that the can shows, so that is what you couldn't put into the food you cook for them. True

Chicken is the main ingredient i many dog foods- so to say that is it not good for our dogs- doesn't make a lot of sense. The meat I am feeding my dog is fit for human consumption. The meat that is in many dog food is by-product- the left over meat that is not fit for human consumption (feet, heads, cartilage, blood) what you feed is your business and as long as you are happy feeding it- that's all that matters. But I just want people to know that there are other options and home cooking is a difficult option but a great one. I didn't really understand what you said in the last sentence but you do have to supplement when you home cook.

| I didn't really understand what you said in the last sentence but you do have to supplement when you home cook. I meant, how can you add those ingredients like Copper Sulfate, Ferrous Sulfate, Folic Acid and etc that you see on the ingredients on the can~? I myself would never cook for him since I am vegetarian. I couldn't bring myself to cook chicken and such for him. Now and then, I have cooked him an egg and/or oatmeal. |
