| Interceptor - prescription medicine.. When I went for Sprinkles microchipping the lady at the reception mentioned that the Vet has recommended Interceptor for my puppy. At that time I thought they just want to rip me off and said I will call later for that. My question is , is it mandatory to have this heartworm prevention medicine just to be on safe side? If i go back to vet she will charge me $50 just to write this prescription medicine. Instead can I get it from a pound or a shelter? Thanks |

| You need a prescription to get it. You need to keep your puppy on this heartworm medicine year round. Usually they do a blood test to rule out that they have heartworm. Then you start the monthly pills. You can't miss a month otherwise you have to get another blood test. I take my babies to a rescue to get the pills. They are great there and they keep great records. They will even sell the pills 1 month dose at a time so I don't have to say buy a 6mo supply all at once.

| Heartworm meds are necessary. Heartworm is deadly if they get it. I dont know if you can get it at the pound or the shelter. There are some places online like petshed that you can buy the heartworm med heartquard without a prescription. I havent seen interceptor for sale anywhere without a prescription but maybe you could get a prescription from your vet

| It is highly recommended that you use heartworm meds but since it isn't a common problem in CA, some people don't. I think it's still a good idea though...

| recently I had discussed this with a holistic vet in my area and she said it is a personal decision if you want to use it or not. Some dogs can still get heartworm even if they are on the pills. And there are less invasive ways of treating it if your dog does get it. Also, here in Minnesota we were told we only need it during warm months. Usually begin in spring and then keep them on it one month after the first frost. http://www.dogs4dogs.com/blog/2009/0...cation-safety/ Last edited by ambocken; 08-09-2009 at 10:00 AM. | Our vet said we don't need it here in the Pacific Northwest because the weather is too mild. Of course we hadn't had the week of record weather in the 90's either. Myrna Proud Mom of Tiki. |

| Hmm I am confused ? I am in LA and it gets hot during summer and spring.. So the heartworm, fleas issue happens during hot or cold weather ? Petshed has this topical medication for both flea and heartworm. Anyone used it ? Revolution Pink for Puppies and Kittens - Buy at PetShed and save $$$ |

| Heartworm is spread by mosquitoes, so if you live in a climate where you have them even part of the year, it is recommended you keep them on heartworm year round. Heartworm is very deadly and there is no non-invasive way to treat. Once diagnosed with heartworm, arsenic is the prescribed method to get rid of them and many tiny furbabies die from the treatment. Interceptor has the least reported problems out of all the heartworm meds and there is one available for 2-10 lb size furbabies. A year supply costs me $42 at my vet.......

| WHen I moved here 15 yr ago my vet said he does see some heartworm cases, but not many at all. Now he sees them much more frequently and recommends all his patients get treated.

| Your vet shouldn't charge you again to give you a prescription, if she's already recommended it...If you decide to get heartworm meds, just go into the vet and tell them you are ready to get the heartworm medication for your pup...I use interceptor every single month, because I live in S.E.Texas, and some of the mosquitoes are as big as jack rabbits lol...Just kidding, but we do have mosquitoes year round I actually buy mine from www.myvetsmeds.com and they send for approval to my vet (via fax)...It's actually cheaper this way, than buying them in the vet's office.... |

| I agree with the others here. We have tons of Mosquitoes here and we keep the doggies on it year round. The ounces of prevention kind of thing. I use Interceptor on all my babies and love it. I had a doberman puppy that had hookworms or whipworms and after the nasty medicine to get rid of them, the vet advised me that Interceptor would keep her from getting them again. And it worked. She stayed on it all of her four short years on earth and never had a worm problem again. I looked at the like for myvetmeds that Sweet Apple recommended and their prices are amazing. Some vets will sell you the meds at the on line price if you bring them proof of the other price; kind of like Walmart. It's worth a try all they can say is they can't price match. Either way they have to write the prescription at no cost if they seen her and she's been heart worm tested and is clear. To buy it on line all you have to do is register with the site and give them your vet's information. They will call and get everything for you...it's very easy. I don't like the revolution topical treatment as my vet told me it was recalled for not working correctly before. So I stay clear of it until the experts say otherwise.
