Default Black spot circles on skin

Our 8 year old Yorkie developed small black brown spots...that are on his skin...have a odor and come off when you wipe them..... it seems to itch him..... I have taken him to the vet... Vet tested him for everything...ring worm, fleas, did blood work....gave him antibiotics, put him on steroids , benedryl and other meds.....shaved his hair...all test came out negative..... The Vet tried everything....finally out of desparation for me and the dog ....I used clorox wipes to wipe the areas and then used calamine to dry it out....seems to help him for short term....

Has anyone experienced anything like this.......

I googled and didn't find much information. A few of the things mentioned are: an allergic reaction, change in pigmentation. Most ideas weren't too concerning. The suggestion was always made to see your vet. I second that idea. Better to be safe than sorry. ~Joanne~

omg please do not use clorox wipes that is highly toxic and anything you put on the skin goes into the blood stream. Please take to a dermatologist and they will do cytology and send out to lab to get exact bacteria infection this is and get the correct antibiotic you need to kill this. It is a staph infection most likely -- does it look like anything in my pics?

DEE DEE ALLERGIES pictures by dwerten - Photobucket

go get some nutiva coconut oil at whole foods or lassens- give 1/4 tsp one time a day. Also buy dr bronners mild unscented baby shampoo from whole foods and wash in that weekly --- this is either a fungal infection or staph infection

did your vet ever give you antibiotic simplicef? That and keflex work for staph infections but at this point i would get them to send to lab cytology and get exact antibiotic.

also go get some dds plus probiotics from vitamin shop and give 2 capsules on a plate 30 min before food to add good bacteria into the digestive tract to fight off the bad bacteria.

what are you feeding? Healing the dog from the inside out is very important. Your vet is trying to mask the symptoms and not getting to the bottom of it and cause. Temarilp will help with itchiness so when you go to dermatologist get temarilp to give 1/2 tab every other day until this is all resolved

Bella gets these little brown specks on her tummy around her bootie. My vet said it's from urine, which makes sense that it could be a fungus. But it always washes off when I bathe her. I use PetSilk and put some on a wash cloth and it comes right off. I hope that your issues are as minor as Bella's. Best of luck to you.

Oh your poor baby! PLEASE don't use Clorox on your kiddo's skin - that's really dangerous.

It is hard to say what this is. Skin issues are always either from allergies or secondary to some kind of illness/disease. My Wylie had some skin issues and my regular vet was useless and misdiagnosed him for months. Finally, I took to a Vet Dermatologist and it was the BEST thing I ever did for him. He not only had Pyoderma (skin infection, easily treated), but ended up having hypothyroid and Atypical Cushing's Disease.

This is the clinic I went to - click on FAQs to see various skin disorders and see if anything looks like what your baby has: Dermatology Clinic for Animals

Welcome to YT. My pom got those all over and her hair would come out in those spots. You can just peel them off. They are waxy feeling. She was diagnosed with bacterial infections and was put on topical antibiotics(panalog) and when really bad she was put on oral antibiotics. She was later diagnosed with Cushing' s Disease because of her other symptoms of excessive drinking and hunger and heavy panting. If the only thing is the skin I would try a dermatologist. Hope they can find out what's bothering him.

Oh, I am so glad that some others answered this thread. I did read at one place that black spots could be related to Cushings. Does you furbaby show any of the symptoms listed on this site? Pet Owner's Crash Course in Canine Cushing's Disease Two of my Yorkies have been tested for Cushings but it turned out to be something else. Hope you can figure out what's going on. ~Joanne~

if it is cushings it will show up in blood work

what vet do you go to as the vet on my other group is from lafayette and she recommended you go to LSU vet school as they do dermatology there and probably less expensive

If for some reason you suspect Cushing's, as others have mentioned - the screening test (which can rule it OUT, but not definitively diagnose it - but this is the first step) is a Urine cortisol-creatinine test - the urine must be collected at home, at a stress free time. If this test shows high cortisol - then you have to move on to an ACTH or LDDS test, or....like my Wylie - a special Adrenal Panel from the U of Tenn., but that's for a more complicated case.
