| PLEASE help! BIG BIG BIG skin problem Hi guys, We are getting desperate here. Our little boy, Ari, 7 months, has always been verrrrrry itchy. One day, we took him to play with another Yorkie and they played around a bit. Ari cut his paw a bit so we took him home and cleaned it out. Being outside was new for him because he's so little and it's so cold here so he is an inside baby. A few days later, I came home to found our apartment covered in his blood. He apparently licked and bit his feet so much that he cut himself and bled. He was fine and excited to see me so I cleaned out his paws again, cleaned up the apartment and left it at that. Now, it's becoming almost daily that this is happening. Not to mention he has severe separation anxiety and cannot be crated. His skin on his paws and nose is going from black to pink but those are the only abnormalities I have noticed on his skin. Oh, and he has scratched his ear so badly they are cut up and missing chunks, too! I don't know what to do and it does not sound like anything else I have seen on the internet. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm worried sick! Thanks, Ari's Mommy |

| Sounds to me like he is having an severe allergic reaction. I would get him to the vet asap. If he is chewing himself to bleed, then there is definitely a problem going on that needs to be addressed by a professional. |

Luv my 7 Furkids Donating Member | I agree, alergies and scratching can lead to secondary infections. Go see your vet. And good luck to you. |

| This all sounds to me like a serious thing that needs veterinary attention ASAP. It could be allergies, mange, fleas or many other different things. Until you have a professional answer and help you can put a shirt on him and little booties made from garden gloves (the ones that have little rubber dots on it.) Cut the fingers off and fix the 'booties' on his feet with either elastic band or double sided velcro... What are you feeding him? Some dogs are allergic to chicken, wheat and/or corn in their food... Last edited by Mitzis Mom; 03-05-2009 at 05:49 PM. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I also think you should get to a vet ASAP - there is really something going on here. Could be mites, mange, flea allergy, environmental allergy, staph infection - a skin scraping should be done and a culture. Remember that allergies are sort of like a domino effect - so once there is an allergy to *anything*, a dog's immune system is then more vulnerable to any allergy (bc the system is suppressed).

| fish oil is good for skin allergies (itching, etc.) kidney problems, arthritis, high cholestrol and a multitude of other things...it also is used for behavior issues and learning...small dogs/cats get a 1/4 a human dose...Liquid is the best, and I use Carlson's Brand, because it is mercury free...so I use 1/8 tsp. twice a day...also will give gorgeous coat...Do NOT give a cat flax seed oil!!!! |

| We are going to take him to the vet asap. Money is just a little tight so we had to wait until payday (today). I just wanted to get opinions of other people with Yorkies. The bootie thing was a good idea though. He wasn't happy but at least he couldn't hurt himself more. |

| Poor Ari! I hope he is doing better.. My Coco has an itching problem too. Luckily she never itches so much I see blood. I have read on here that they do have very sensitive skin. My husband always tells me "she's a dog she is going to itch", but I want to take her to the vet but since money is tight I am going to have to wait till income tax. Anyone know why they itch? She does not have flea's I check her all the time, and her hair is not dull it has a shine to it. |

| my two month old also scratches, as well as my 10 month old. the vet told me that puppies will scratch because they're getting rid of their puppy hair. i checked for fleas, and tried different food products because i thought it was an allergy thing, but nothing stopped the itching. i even tried giving fish oil. i'm hoping the vet is right and it's just them getting rid of their puppy hair.

YT 3000 Club Member | He needs to see the vet could be fleas, chester has itches to the enviroment, I use fish oil, run a flea comb thorugh him every nite, all soap with no dyes and also dryer sheets, , it could be something from the grass, a allergic reaction to something, chester does the temerail p which is benadryl and prednisone. If they give him a steriod shot it will make them urinate alot. Sometimes you can rinse them in the bathtub or try some benadyrl if you cannot get into the vet right away. |

| so we took ari to the vet and they checked for demidex (sp?) and it came back negative. the vet said he had no obvious signs of any infection or allergies so he gave us this antibiotic/steroid spray to put on his paws and ears. he seemed to be doing really well and not scratching as much. and then yest we came home to find that he had bit his paws again and bled everywhere. i dont know what to do. we have decided to try to continue using the spray and putting his booties back on and do this for two weeks hoping that everything will heal. if after those two weeks he is still biting and bleeding, we r going to take him back to the vet. thanks for your concern everyone and if you come up with anything else please let me know. |

Since so many members have had success with our Calm Eyes product, I just wanted to recommend our Calm Coat all natural topical spray which will stop ithcing & scrathcing immediatly as well as soothe insect bites, promote hair growth & wound healing as well as soothing skin allergies & rash. It is all natural & really does work. I use it on my own dogs daily! |
