| Have to take my little one to get spayed! Or do I?? Help! Ok I need some advice here. I have heard both the positive and negatives about getting our doggies fixed. My 2 year old (Coby) has been neutured and all is well. He weighs a little over 5 lbs. But my newer pup (Shelby) is the one I am worried about. she just turned 1 yr old and weighs 3.2 lbs. she's a tiny little thing! i am worried about the risk of surgery. should i be? my vet says it is fairly common to get dogs her size spayed, but that there is always a risk. this did not reassure me! she also needs 4 baby teeth pulled which he said he would do at the same time. very scary! anyone have any feedback or thoughts on my situation? because coby is the only other dog she is really ever around, and because she is only in heat like twice a year, i am almost considering not getting it done. one more thing - she was recently in heat the past two days (had her period or whatever the correct terminology is!). if I WAS to get her spayed, would I need to wait for a period of time before doing so? thanks SO much! |

| As long as she is three pounds, she should be fine with anesthesia. Just make sure you get pre op bloodwork done to see if her organs are healthy and can metabolize the anesthesia. She definitely needs those retained baby teeth out and that has to be done under anesthesia so you might as well spay her. Has she just had one heat cycle? If you get her spayed before she has her second cycle, you can still lower her risk of getting mammary cancer to 8%. (If you had her spayed before she ever came into heat, you would have eliminated her risk of cancer.) If you wait until after her 2nd heat cycle, her risk of cancer rises to 25%, the same as for an unspayed dog. Having her spayed also eliminates her chance of ever getting pyometra, a dangerous uterine infection. If she has only been in heat for two days, it will be another three weeks before her heat cycle is complete. Be very careful that she doesn't get out and get pregnant as she is too small to carry and deliver puppies safely. Check with your vet, but he will probably have you wait a few weeks after she finishes her cycle before he spays her. |

| poor baby She is very cute! I would get her spayed for sure!! I use to work at a vet and we would do tons and tons of spays on little girls. I had peanut neutered when he was 4 months at 3lbs. Esp that she is going to need her baby teeth out, and I can tell you pulling the teeth takes about 5 mins!! I have seen it done so many times. ( i was the doc's assit in sx) I would just make sure you trust your vet and make sure all the vet techs are good and they know what they are doing in sx, and if something went wrong the techs are quick to help the doc. dont be scared to ask the hospital about the techs!! If they are certified or just training I am sure everything will be fine. Spays and neuters come and go all day, thats the most done sx. She will just need xtra xtra post sx care I would also make sure that all he baby teeth that she is going to need out is there, thats the thing you dont want is to get her sx and her teeth pulled and then have to put her under again!!!

| thanks! also, the vet said they would have to keep her over night. is that normal? by the way, shelby has been having abnormal bowels the last few days (very soft). is this normal? or maybe it has nothing to do with the heat cycle? thanks! |

| My puppy is 8 months and weighs 2 lbs and i got her spayed and had teeth pulled out two weeks ago and everything went perfectly. I was really worried about getting it done at first because she is so small but i'm really happy i got it done. If you're vet is exerienced with small animals everything will go great. And yes it is normal to keep her overnight its just regular procedure to make sure everything is alright. My vet also made sure she wasn't in heat since they lose more blood, so you're probably going to have to wait...hope i helped and good luck! |

My furkids Donating Member | I had both of my girls spayed over a month ago. Like you I was a nervous wreck!!! to say the least! Sadie is 4yrs old 5 1/2 lbs and Lillie is 2 yrs old 4 1/2 lbs. I had blood work done on both of them. They had both come in heat and my vet said I had to wait 1 month before having them spayed. They did fine. I had their teeth cleaned at the same time. Sadie had to have one of her adult teeth removed. I only wish I had had it done sooner. I was so nervous to have it done (I also read alot of horror stories), that I waited.

Yorkie Yakker | I have a 2lb yorkie who is 11 months and hasn't had her first heat cycle. I dropped her off this morning to be spayed. The Dr. reassured me that she would be fine. I'm still worried about her because she is so tiny. They told me that if she was to go in heat before her surgery that they would still be able to do the surgery. Your little Shelby looks like my Katie, awww she's so sweet. I am going to call this evening and check on her. I will keep you posted. Yes, they have to keep them overnight. I don't like that either. |

| Great answers! I too, had the same querry. Our little Sugar is 5 1/2 months and just went in for her blood work and needles today. The doctor is very good and once the blood work is back, if no problems sees not issues. But, we remain nervous, until I read all the positive here! Thanks so much. Next week she will get the spay completed |

| KT - yesterday spayed KT, at 6 mons, was spayed yesterday. She also had 7 teeth extractions, and is doing just fine. She was 3.3 lbs prior to the surgery. I was able to take her in that morning, and bring her home that afternoon!! Today my big problem is how to keep her from playing!! (I have a great vet and have been with him for almost 20 years.) |

| When I got my first two Yorkies, one was only 3 1/2 pounds at a year old. The other was 5 lbs. I was a big chicken and didnt have them spayed. I couldnt help thinking that I would lose them under anesthesia. Well, fast forward 9 years. Both HAD to be spayed and they were 10 years old. One had a prolapsed uterus and the other had pyrometria. Well, everything turned out ok and both lived another 5 years with no problems. It was scary though. Good luck on your decision!

| Overnight hospitalization is fairly common but it is not okay if somebody isn't there awake watching her.
