As long as she is three pounds, she should be fine with anesthesia. Just make sure you get pre op bloodwork done to see if her organs are healthy and can metabolize the anesthesia.
She definitely needs those retained baby teeth out and that has to be done under anesthesia so you might as well spay her.
Has she just had one heat cycle? If you get her spayed before she has her second cycle, you can still lower her risk of getting mammary cancer to 8%. (If you had her spayed before she ever came into heat, you would have eliminated her risk of cancer.) If you wait until after her 2nd heat cycle, her risk of cancer rises to 25%, the same as for an unspayed dog. Having her spayed also eliminates her chance of ever getting pyometra, a dangerous uterine infection.
If she has only been in heat for two days, it will be another three weeks before her heat cycle is complete. Be very careful that she doesn't get out and get pregnant as she is too small to carry and deliver puppies safely. Check with your vet, but he will probably have you wait a few weeks after she finishes her cycle before he spays her. |
