I just made an appointment to have Toby neutered. I was quoted the following prices (I almost flipped) $210 canadian for neutering, $60 dollars extra for laser(optional) and $120.00 for the pre-anthesic bloodwork. Just wondering if all this stuff is necessary. I have phoned other vets in my area and they are about $60.00 cheaper for just the regular surgery. One vet told me he wouldn't recommend the bloodwork unless he was an older dog. I have been going to my vet for about 16 years. I do feel somewhat loyal, but I don't know.????

When I spayed Coco I wanted the best for her, but I was also financialy strapped. So her vet was charging about 250 all together. He kept talking about bloodwork, but I didn't want to put Coco through one more thing the day before her surgery. Plus many vets and people I talked to said it wasn't really necessary. So long story short, I had a gut feeling about the vet. So I looked around and found a great clinic that spayed and pulled teeth and whatever else was necessary for $50. It was great! The people were awesome, and the clinic great clean looking. They did a great job on her, infact there's not even a scar. Maybe you can check out some of the clinics around your area.

I live in Northern California, to get Sebastian fixed it was about $250.00, but I got his micro chip put in and they gave me meds for him. I thought that was costly also. He didn't have blood work because he was a young pup. Now I have to get Sweet Pea fixed..ughhh

Its costly to love these lil' fur balls

If your dog is healty and has no history of being sick at all. I wouldn't do the bloodwork this is just my opinion. If you had a dotg 7+ years it would be different. I would call other vets and see what their policy is. But to me if it is that big of a difference in price and the vet had no concerns I wouldn't do bloodwork. Of course, they are going to tell you there is always a risk with any type of surgery. The $210 does that include the laser?

In GA there is an organization called spay GA that you can purchase discounted certificates and they give you a list of vets that accept them. I had our Chocolate Lab spayed a couple of years ago and I paid $60 for the certificate and had to pay and additonal $50 I had a umbilicial hernia repaired at the same time and of course they went ahead and gave her antibotics just as a precaution. This was still about $100- $150 cheaper than just going to the vet without it. I live in the Atlanta area and things tend to be a little higher.

The 210.00 does not include the laser, that is an additional 60.00. Our city did give out 75.00 vouchers to spay or neuter your pet, but there are none available anymore. Just my luck.

Why in the world would they have a set amount of vouchers? Anyway I would just call different vets. If you live in or close to a big city maybe considering driving out about 20 miles that's what I did.

For Thor, all I have to do is go down tot the local animal shelter, pay them $54 dollars in cash, and bring the certificate to my vet. Actually, my regular vet didn't take certificates, so I had to find another vet that did take them, but I found one under the suggestion of a friend that just had 3 dogs neutered at this place. When you put your zip code in on the website above, it will give yo a lis of places that accept the certificate. Good luck. Oh, but you also have to pay for antibiotics which my friend said was $20.

I just had my 2nd one done - Zeus had the compete work up including blood work and thank goodness - they found a problem and we are now treating it. Left untreated who know what could have happened. My final cost for the surgery to include Micro Chip $343.......to me no amount of money is too much they are both like kids and I know just how much I've spent on the one who is in college and Zeus is much cheaper (hahahaha)

At my clinic , they did'nt do the bloodwork when Jade and Mitsou have been spayed . When Brianne will be spayed , they told me it is not necessary . They do it for older dog only . ????

I booked Deegan's neuter a couple weeks ago and the costs that they gave me were $250 for the neuter (regular, because they don't do laser.), $30 for pre-anesethia testing, $85 for the microchip, and $10 per each tooth to be withdrawn. I figure it's going to cost about $400. It's steep, but the pre anestethia test is only an extra $30, so I am going to have it done. But it's pretty steep for what you were quoted at ($120)! Ouch, I would just wait to see how many people actually had the pretest done and it they think it was helpful or not. And of course maybe call some vets for their opinions.

When I was looking for a place to bring Gidget I was getting quoted all these crazy prices....while I wanted the best for her i didnt have the $ just sitting around to get her laser etc. But at the same notion i didnt want to bring her to a "butcher" Our vets quote was over $250 and then I talked to my mothers neighbor (he is a vet and a teacher of vet science as well) and he said that if you want to pay that and get all the blood work done etc then go for it but it isnt any safer then if you go to a clinic. he siad that personaly he would prefer a clinic seeing that they are set up to do that and only that, they do it day in and day out. And that it is a simple thing to do...he said the only thing he would watch for was if they were in the middle of a heat to wait so that they wouldnt bleed out (that was the only major issue) then I called the local Humane Society (I was calling everywhere) And the lady who awnsered was talking with me for almost 1/2 hr she had sugested a place near my house that was a animal "birth control" center. and that she had brought several of her small dogs there and have never had any problems....she did say however that if your pup is smaller then 4 lbs that she would pay more to bring them to your usual vet. But Gidget was over 6lbs so I brought her....it was $70 something and that was for the after surgery (bring home) painkillers and having her baby teeth taken out too. They were really clean and friendly and super nice with the animals. She had no issues healing and now doesnt even have a scar. So it is up to you... but I was happy with my choice.

i feel your pain. its time for me to get my boy neutered also. ive been calling around trying to find decent rates. so far nothing under 250.00 including meds and everything but his teeth havnt all fallen out so that gonna be extra about 10.00 per tooth. ouch !!!!!! the city does neutering for 10.00 once a month( on a 1st come 1st serve and only 30 a day) but i dont think they care about the animals just about stopping the growing animal population so i'm afraid they will butcher my boy and i would feel terrible so i'm going to have to bite the bullet and pay for it......im sure there will be more needed to raise the price (the aftercare) products.....

yes it can be expensive. Mac neuter and Mellie's spay combined cost me $625.00 I live in NJ and they go to a vet who specializes in small animals. I just felt very safe with my vet so I decided it was worth the money.

I noticed that several posters live in SoCal. I took both my boys on the same day to the Golden West Humane Society on Gilbert in Garden Grove. I now use them as my non emergency vets. I had bloodwork, both boys fixed, pain meds, antibiotics and microchipped for $160 for both. Neither one of my boys had any problems, they do not even have a scar and they were running around within an hour after getting home. They have treated my boys for minor things since and their prices are extremely reasonable. Garett had a minor skin infection, $12 for the visit, $20 for meds. I like the staff there, they love the boys and I will continue using them for non-emergency stuff (unfortunately they do not handle emergencies). Another member also got her boy fixed there and was happy with the services. Check out your local Humane Society.
