| Scared about Spaying!!! I just called the vet to make appointments for Jordan, our golden retriever, 6 months and Lexie, my yorkie, 7 months to be spayed. They said no problem with Jordan, but they are very hesitant to do Lexie because she's between 4 and 6 pounds. I asked if they use isofluorane (sp?) for the anestesia and he said it's all they used. He compared it to operating on a preemie baby. With a 40 lb. dog there is margin for error, blood loss, etc. but with a 5 pounder if something happens there's nothing that can be done. What am I supposed to do? I DEFINITELY don't want to breed and I don't want her to get cancer because she wasn't spayed. I'm just so upset because I don't want to lose my baby in surgery! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I want to take care of this before she goes into her first heat!

| I would look for another vet. Your Yorkie is in the average size range for this age, the same size and age both of mine were when they had their spay. I was told it was very safe because they use pediatric doses of everything. You might consider finding a vet who is more comfortable and experienced with small breed dogs. Go to the regional forum here for your area and request a recommendation.

| I think that finding another vet is the best option. I don't want to take any chances. While I was upset with what the vet said, my hubby was FURIOUS! He said you can't tell me that if I bring my girl in to get a routine surgery that you are prepared for her not to make it through! That's not okay with us! I sure hope we can find someone new. What are the average ages for a yorkie's first heat? I just want to know how much time we have to look. Thank you for the feedback!

| I would find another vet. I have had 4 or 5 dogs altered when they under 5lbs. All of them did just fine. The shelter I use to volunteer at did dogs as soon as they were 8 wks old and many of those weren't much bigger than 4 or 5 lbs, and as far as I know they all did just fine as well.

| Yeah, he is probably not experienced with smaller dogs. His comments were silly. Small dogs are neutered/spayed everyday without complications (not to say there aren't or can't be).

| i think spaying is a more difficult procedure than neutering... but i'll give my input anyway... Kash got neutered on Thursday and he is 2.7 lbs... my vet uses isoflurane... but they still have to use a different medication to sedate the dog, and i requested ProPoFlo. it costs extra, but it's safer for the dog... isoflurane is the gas anethesia used to keep the dog sleeping after he/she has already been sedated. Kash is already back to normal. he's sitting behind me on my chair chewing on an empty pill bottle... throroughly rinsed out, of course. i think your pups (especially Lexie) will do great! maybe your vet just isn't confident in what he/she can do? i would be upset (like you were) if the vet was going into the whole procedure expecting failure. ever heard of the saying, "if you think you're going to fail, you will??" well, that's actually only ever said for taking tests in school, lol. but you get what i'm trying to say. the vet should keep a positive mindset... but who am i to say that since i'm not remotely close to being any sort of doctor. maybe he has to prepare you for the worst JUST INCASE. that way he can say he warned you?? ack, i don't know... i'm rambling now. do what's in your heart. good luck!

| I just took Cassie home from the Vets at about 6PM tonight after being spayed and having three baby teeth pulled because they never came out, and after having her teeth cleaned. She is fourteen months and her weight varies between 1.8 and 2.2 lbs. She is full grown and very tiny. She is fine. My vet uses isoflorine. When I asked my vet could she tell me if Cassie would be alright- she replied that there is always a risk when using anesthesia, just as there is with people. But they take EVERY precaution, and they reassured me that most likely everything would be alright. They do TONs of these with little dogs all the time. I was a wreck because last week I had just lost my almost 17 yo Yorkie Merlin, the love of my life. He was about 4-6 months old when I had him neutered and was pretty much about the same size as Cassie is fullgrown. He was about 3.5lbs full grown. I was still grieving his loss but knew I had to do Cassie soon because the breeder never got her spayed and she either had a false first heat or a real one, so I didn't want to wait too long before getting it done. To make a long story short, she is resting comfortably in her bed now. I just checked on her. Of course she is a little sore and squeaks a little because it is hurting her a bit. After all, she just had a historectomy. But I have pain meds to give her and I will give them to her as soon as I can so she will sleep okay, and they say by tommorrow or the next day she will want to be jumping around and I will need to keep her quiet for about 10 to fourteen days. Thats probably going to be hard because she likes to jump around like a little jack rabbit. I may have to carry her in her shoulder pouch. WHEW! Anyway, get another Vet. You know of course there are never any guarantees, with people or with pets. But with most vets who really know what they are doing and take every precaution, most dogs come out with flying colors. Actually, I've never heard a vet say what your vet said to you. Your little one is gigantic next to Cassie, so I don't think her size is too small. It really is very average for a Yorkie. If what your vet said was accurate, then 90% of all Yorkies would never get spayed because they would all be deemed too small. Doesn't make sense. Tons of yorkies are 5lbs and even smaller and are spayed everyday. Most are not as small as Cassie fullgrown. But 5lbs, this really is about average. Sorry for ranting. I would get another vets opinionn- one who is experienced with small dogs. That being said, as my vet said to me, of course in things medical there is always a risk. I guess you have to weigh the risks against the potential benefits. Good luck with whatever decision you make. Take Care,Shellie |

| Just to update everyone, I called around a little more in my town and found a vet who was very confident about doing the procedure. They are also going to pull any double/baby teeth while she's under. They seemed so confident! So Lexie's scheduled for spay on May 13th at 8:00am. So now, if she's about 4-5 lbs (haven't weighed her in a while) what size onesie should I get her so she doesn't have to wear the cone on her head?
