Where to find that gullet?

If you have a slaughterhouse in your city, then you can probably get all of those "hard to find items". Even your local butcher might be of some help there! I get mine from this place;
GreenTripe.Com Main Index
as I order my green tripe from them anyways, I also get trachea and gullet. I often also order their xcalibur. See the products section.
Here's another place to order exotics and hard to find items from although I haven't ordered from them yet, I plan on it if they're shipping $ is reasonable;
Beef Cartilage

My senior baby has a bad hip joint and I'd rather not feed artificial Glucosamine so I feed gullets and tracheas, in any form that I can get it raw. Whole or ground! :)

Well, I jumped in and tried it for the first time...I fed all 5 of my dogs chicken legs and wing drumettes tonight. I have 3 yorkies and 2 chis. My larger yorkie male, Booboo got it right away!! He took his piece and started crunching right away!! He finished the whole drumstick and then came back for more!! My tiny chi girl growled at him when he came over and she was still chewing on her bone!! All of them did well, the only one that didn't do so well was my older female yorkie who is missing all her front teeth. I was kind of pulling the meat off of the bone so she could get started. She ate about half of the leg meat but got lazy and walked away. I figured she will be hungrier tomorrow and will take more time to eat her leg!! I fed them out in the yard on the grass but I need to come up with a better plan. They don't have crates and I like to feed them all at once because it takes forever otherwise. Plus they seem to eat better when there is some competition, otherwise they don't want to eat. My kitchen floor is tile, so I am worried about the grout absorbing the juices. I might just put down a vinyl tablecloth with a sheet over it and teach them all to eat on the sheet. Thanks for all the info. I am still alittle concerned with Brooke because she is currently still on a chemo treatment and is immune deficient. She has a brain disease, but will be done with treatment in July. Thanks for all the info and links! Can you give us some inside info on meat sourcing?

Chicken feet: natural source of glucosamine and chondriotin.

This is normal, at first, as they probably think they're dreaming! Once they realize this is not a treat, and will be the daily offering, they will settle down and regulate.

You may fine this is anoher 'plus' of PMR. Once they are busy with real food, and their systems are beginning to benefit from the nourishment, they might not show this need for competition. They probably needed that push to eat the nutrient-lacking k*bble.

The vinyl sounds like a plan. Some, who have multiple dogs, use an old shower curtain, with feeding towels. Many of us use feeding towels - myself, included. The towels can be laundered, and they learn that the texture actually helps them with traction for holding of RMBs.

I am so sorry about your Brooke. Prayers for her. What is she eating, now? Actually, the species-appropriate diet is the most easily digested for any of our furfriends; but, is a particular benefit for those with digestive problems. I'm sure the chemo is affecting her that way, too. I recomment joining RAW Chat. Talk to this group about your concerns re Brooke, and you may also be able to do some networking for a meat coop in your area. Many people are doing that, now, to order in bulk or exchange sources.

Also, check out surrounding asian markets for more exotic items.

Makes me think of racing on a track!

"Traction"; ROFL!

I tried the towel thing in the beginning but instead of eating, all they did was roll around on those towels as they do after bath time! My dogs are crazy! So I'm using an old cotton sheet. They spend about 5 minutes moving their RMB's from one side to the other inside their xpen until everybody has settled into a spot that suits them, lol. Plus there's the coveting of things! "Even though his bone looks exactly like mine, maybe his tastes better!" I have watched them "exchange" their pieces between each other without any aggression at all but actually with a lot of love and respect. Have you heard of this? My 1 year old female even appeared to be showing the new female puppy how to do this chewing thing and kept bringing the chicken wing to her the first couple of times when I first switched her diet!
Yeah, well, I guess another myth is that pack behavior is savage!
Btw. thanks for mentioning the chicken feet, I totally forgot about those! Past Halloween, I colored the nails on the chicken feet with KoolAid because my dear friend from Seattle was visiting and I wanted to freak her out as she's totally squeamish about prey model and feeding time! ROFL

Yeah....actually. Well, my Mozart is a pretty smart guy, and he learned the rule Keep the food on the towel, when I made him pick it up and "put it back" when he would drag it off onto the floor. In the beginning, if he left the room with his meal, it was taken, and he fasted that meal. No towel = no food. And, he has learned that it slips around less if he keeps it on the towel. I've watched him pick it up from the floor and return it to the towel and use it as a tool! Mine don't roll around on the towels; but, I do have to watch Ms. Abigail, as she'll just walk all over it if I don't pick it up right away.

...No, but I'm not surprised, and how sweeeeeeet is this?! It makes sense, too; if nutritional needs of each member of the pack is being fulfilled, no need for food aggression. Well, unless one member is a little snot, like Abigail, and just throws her weight around. Mozart has always deferred to her. He could easily snap her neck with one bite; but, rather views her as a necessary annoyance. I've only heard him even growl at her once at mealtime, and that was recently. She was soooooooooo insulted! And, shocked , I might add.

....heheheheh...you sound like my evil twin :D. About three years ago, my Red Hat chapter was hosting a 'Hen Party'. The object was to dress as any bird or fowl of your choice, and bring bird-related dishes, etc. Well, I put together a costume of sorts (a chicken); but could not attend, so I sent my representative. I sealed a chicken foot in a food saver bag, so it would be safe for handling; and left instructions that it should be passed around, and each member should share something about themselves when it was their turn. LOL They weren't at all surprised that I would do that.

cococalypso 05-08-2008 02:31 PM

How funny! I am feeding them once a day with a little kibble in the morning until tommorrow and then it's no more of that stuff! I am gonna get some organ meat for their "breakfast" I just have to put out something or Coco will scratch at the door all morning long cuz she's a piggy. I guess they will slow down soon. Thanks ya'll for the help.

I am so glad someone else is starting this and enjoying it too! Aren't they so cute when they are being vicious?:aimeeyork

My babies have had raw for there last 3 meals now. They are eating the chicken leg meat but won't eat the bone. Do you just keep giving them back the bone until they eat it?

I am glad it is "tomorrow", and hopefully you will rethink any K*bble at all. Real food, and K*bble digest at a different rate, and if you run into tummy upset, you're more likely to believe it's the PMR, instead of the K*bble, since K*bble is what you know, and the majority opinion is that it is "best". I encourage you to please, Read Here, about k*bble, and toss what you have left!

Hi Betty ~ Yes, just continue to offer the bone. You might (depending on how small their mouths are) even crush the bone a little, or cut it with kitchen scissors, so the dogs can get a taste of the marrow. Right now, they don't know it's really food.

tortoisekeeper 05-09-2008 04:58 AM

Thanks Ada. I have cut into the bone guess they just need to give it a try. I won't give them another leg until they eat the bone too.

My 14 yr old lab, Zack has experienced such a huge change in his stiffness.

His front left leg was the worst and he now leads with that leg again when running.

He looks graceful again when doing his ballerina twirls when we come home.

My son noticed he again leaps up from his bed first thing in the morning.

We are all just amazed at how this diet has changed his quality of life.

I had to do that with Milo---------I just offer the leftover at the next meal.

I have to do that with the cats too.

Last night was the second night with chicken and they were loving it. My small chi, 3 lbs, gorged a little too much and threw up some of her dinner. It came out the same as it went in!! She is just so excited for it that I think she tries to eat too fast! I've never seen her excited for food like that before! I also got a deal at Safeway yesterday, they have the Foster Farm's chicken breast, thighs and legs at $.99/lb!! How long can you keep the meat frozen? I bought a bunch and split it into baggies for their daily rations.

You know....y'all may just think I'm overly emotional, or melodramatic about this whole thing; but, I'm hearing this a lot, and it just makes me weep, for joy. Yes....literally, weep. And, I so regret that I did not know about PMR, sooner for my Mr. Mozart. Yes, that's what it is, don't worry. She just thinks she's dreaming, or that this is a rare occurrence. Once she learns that THIS is her diet, she'll slow down and regulate. Also, try giving her larger pieces, that she must take time with, to work at.

....... Exciting, huh?! Again, dogs are not people, and freezer burn does not affect them. Though, if you have a good freezing system (food saver) that will keep it longer, that is optimum. And, if you find they turn their noses up after it's been frozen several weeks, then you'll know - they just don't 'do' freezer burn. But, if you shop for bargains (be careful of 'enhanced' meats!), it hurts a lot less when they refuse it! LOL

Love your piccies! You should add them to the PMR album, here!

RawfedYorkieLuv 05-09-2008 02:31 PM

Awesome, just awesome!

:D :D :D
Pure joy! I'm so excited and happy to see those pictures!

Spread the word! K*bble must die! Vets are having to cave in to the pressure from people like us who are raising healthy animals!

My friend and her 3 morbidly obese/sick cats just made the switch 14 weeks ago after she read and listened to the facts and get ready for this, guys; Squiggy, the diabetic feline is HAS LOST 6 POUNDS and his insulin dosage has been adjusted down to a minimum as of yesterday! She's hoping he'll eventually fully recover from type II diabetes (the other two kitties were saved from further damage and are now at a healthy weight)!!!! :D I was given the happy news and the following story earlier today;
My friend's vet was very pleased but seemed oddly surprised with the progress and asked her if she needed another prescription for the Hill's RX crap when my friend replied that she's been feeding prey model raw and that's the reason for the great progress, therefore *Pet Crack* was not needed any longer! The vet argued that the cat was just responding really well to the insulin therapy!( Please note; all of her cats have been eating Hill's k*bble their entire lives!) What followed is a great, somewhat funny and true story as I know my friend real well and we initially clicked due to similar personalities so I KNOW she actually did this; this vet (a woman-to clear up any "she" confusions) urged my friend to make an appointment for the other two cats, wanting to evaluate them as she was worried about what this *new* diet could've done to them! My friend agreed (:p) but instead of her cats, she drove the leftover bag of k*bble she kept just in case, over to the vet's office and exclaimed to the entire waiting room that this stuff almost killed her cats and that since she's feeding raw, the cats are recovering! Oh, I should also mention that the bag of k*bble had a copy of the Veterinarian Oath stapled onto it! LOL. Needless to say that my friend is now seeing a Holistic Veterinarian who understands that cats are obligate carnivores- NOT rabbits.....

The dogs got livers and gizzards for breakfast this morning and a leftover chicken leg from the cat, who does not seem too keen on this like the dogs were. DANG! The dogs are done with k*bble now though. I don't think they would really eat it anyway now. I think it will take some work with Miss Sophia the kitty. :cat

At first I smashed the bone little bit with a hammer and that did the trick. I don't have to do that any more.:)

....... :clapsmile.....I think you're right. This is pretty much the pattern once they get a taste of real food. They can now smell and determine the difference in fresh meat and the rancid by-products and fat that are sprayed on the k*bble to entice the dog to eat it. :sickie:

RawfedYorkieLuv 05-10-2008 10:31 AM

Frustrated with faulty equipment!!!!

Grrrrrr, I chopped in half yet another cutting board yesterday!!!! :thumbdown
It's not like I'm trying to hack a buffalo carcass in half; just dismembered a whole chicken....my poultry shears are fine, just getting faster results with the cleaver!
The cleaver that I'm using is just a run of the mill kind (Farberware $9 @ Walmart) and it keeps breaking my polythyrene cutting boards! Because it's a cheap one, it might not be balanced right
I am seriously thinking about investing in a wooden chopping block, which I KNOW will hold up to the job!

Oh, on the flip side; hubby has a client who's the head butcher at a local grocery store. This very nice man (my new best friend, lol) is bringing us a big bag full of goodies this afternoon and I'm soooo grateful! Thank Goodness, I have an extra freezer!!! I'm hoping to score some nice lamb meat and organs as this can get pricey! :(
Jeez, I'm starting to feel like a meat hoarder, rofl.

Happy Saturday everyone! :)
P.S. have you noticed how many times our ever growing thread has been viewed yet!!!??? After all this time, it's still on top of the list!

Boy o boy did I learn the hard way about the gizzards and liver!!! YUCK! Coco let me learn ALL about it on my carpet!! YIKES, I think she ate all of them and didn't leave Maggie any. I think we will wait a bit longer on that again.... Luckily, I am not all that fond of this carpet and we will be tearing it out this summer because there are wood floors underneath anyway. She had been doing so good and no accidents too:( Oh well, you live you learn. But, on a good note, Maggie's fur is soooo soft feeling now! She's so silky smooth feeling.:)

tjdmom 05-14-2008 05:31 PM

This is what we've been doing....
In the morning, I give Zoe (yorkie) a small meal. Sometimes it's a gizzard or two, or a heart, or liver or just plain chicken that I have cut off of a boneless breast from our dinner (before I cooked it of course). This makes it a quick meal and not much for me to do and I'm able to have the time to watch her eat since that doesn't take near as long as when a bone is involved. Sometimes I give Sasha(the collie) the same but she's not a big morning eater and by the way, does not like liver at all. At dinner time, they both get something with bone in it and a bigger meal for both. Mostly that has been chicken but I have had 4 or 5 days of pork but after the first day of Sasha having a loose stool, I switched to more like 1/2 pork 1/2 chicken. I have some pork "hocks" no idea just what they are and don't really want to know but thought I would try more pork this week. I also got a really great deal on chicken quarters - only .59/lb. I was excited about that! And the last thing I wanted to mention is about the gizzards and hearts. It is without a doubt, both my dogs favorite thing - especially the hearts I think they would be awesome training treats except for the fact that they are slimey and I don't really like to touch them. :p Any suggestions for me, am I doing this right so far?

All in all, this has not been nearly as difficult as I thought it would be and it makes me feel so good to see the improvements. One of these days, I will post photo's of Sasha's teeth which look better and better every day!

But I do have one question, someone asked me and I couldn't answer it and had to admit that it had crossed my mind..... If your dogs eats whatever, say chicken, and it has salmonella or something and they get it their hair or their mouth can it be transmitted to you when you kiss them?

tjdmom 05-16-2008 04:52 PM

anyone?

RawfedYorkieLuv 05-16-2008 05:48 PM

Transfer of salmonella

Well, I guess anything could happen in theory. No cases have been reported though. Technically, anything food can have salmonella, kibble is no exception! Only because a dog eats kibble, does not mean that his mouth or poop is sterile or sanitary for that matter. Dogs are licking their privates when we may not be aware of it then go over and kiss them. Nobody in my family has ever gotten sick from our dogs licking us and I haven't heard of anybody getting sick from prey model fed dogs. After my dogs are done eating, sometimes there are meat remnants around the mouth and feet so I baby wipe them. I'm not french kissing any animals so I personally am not worried about it. If my dogs feel like planting one on me after feeding, I let them! After all, I have an immune system, too. LOL

My little Missy got SO sick from that Heartworm dose. She is 13 now and I have only given it that once. Never again!

miss_marley 05-18-2008 11:52 AM

I started Marley on a raw diet over a week ago. She's been doing great, she loves it, so far I've been giving her premade chicken patties from Urban Carnivore, and a few chicken necks. When I tried her on beef patties, she threw it up.

Today I was at the grocery store, and I bought her turkey necks (which I broke into smaller chunks), chicken hearts, and chicken gizzards. I put them in the freezer to freeze for a couple days. Are these all good to give her? How often should I give the hearts and gizzards, and how many? What other things can I buy from the grocery store that's good for her?
