| Removing inner ear hair/ ear mite question Gizmo is 12 weeks old today. When we took him for his well puppy check a couple of days after we picked him up, we discovered that he had ear mites. The vet gave us Earadimite, and we have faithfully put the drops in once a day. His last day for the drops will be Tuesday. I have noticed that Gizmo has a lot of hair inside his ear, and I have read that those hairs need to be plucked. That seems like a LOT of hair to pluck! How do I make that less painful and what is the common feeling about removing that hair? Do I do it now or after the ear mite medicine finishes on Tuesday? Would it help to prevent the ear mites from coming back? Or do I need to let the ears heal? I would appreciate your thoughts.

| You can pull the hair after ear mites are gone if you want. Take a Q-tip and twirl the hair around it and give a quick yank. They do cry out when hair is pulled out but sometimes if they have a lot of inner ear hair it's necessary to have it removed. The hair holds moisture, dirt and wax and can also lead to ear infections. I have a tool called a hemostat that I remove the hair with. Here is a very informative site about careing for the dogs ears. http://www.articlecity.com/articles/...icle_591.shtml |

| Thank you for your suggestions and hints. The website was very helpful as well. I really appreciate it. One question though...the article mentions an ear powder. I did a google search and found this product... http://www.epetpals.com/cgi-bin/comm...y=073626618010 Does the powder actually make the hair softer or just easier to grip to pluck out? Does it help prevent infection? On another site I saw a product with "astringent" in the title...wouldn't that sting?

| The powder helps you get a good grip. Some eveen say that it helps deaden the pain. Just make sure that you thoroughly remove the powder after the hair is pulled. I hand strip some of the softer stuff and use a hemostat to get the rest. I think it's alot like waxing, it hurts like crazy the first time but a bit less each time after that.

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | good luck getting rid of them - if you're like me you won't want to inflict that pain - I had my girls done by a groomer once a long time ago - and really never had the need to do it again |

| I finally got the courage up to pluck the hair out of Hoku and Kalani's ears a bit ago. I used my eyebrow tweezer and it didn't phase them a bit. The only reaction I got out of either of them was if I pulled a sizable clump they shook their heads like they had an itch but allowed me to continue

| Thanks everyone! I appreciate a site where I can ask "silly" questions when necessary, but no one treats them as silly! After doing the suggested research, it appears that I just have to bite the bullet and remove the hair. It's for his own good, so a brief sting is better than an infection of any kind. That would be much more painful in the long run.

| I bought a locking hemostat to remove the ear hair. I also use the powder. It says the powder is also good to dry out the ear, like after baths... Mine never make a sound when I do it. The trick is to just grab a couple hairs at a time and it makes it much easier on them. (hence, easier on you!) If you grab a bunch at a time, it's going to hurt a lot more. |

| My groomer is very good friends with my Vet. She gets a numbing solution from the vet so it doesn't hurt when she plucks their ears.
