I finally got the courage up to pluck the hair out of Hoku and Kalani's ears a bit ago. I used my eyebrow tweezer and it didn't phase them a bit. The only reaction I got out of either of them was if I pulled a sizable clump they shook their heads like they had an itch but allowed me to continue
