| Matts, always matts! All summer long, I kept Teddy in a short cut as it is no secret that I hate his cottony coat. (God, do I hate his coat). But, now that winter is upon us, I have allowed his coat to grow out as he takes a chill easily. Additionally, I have never clothed him and I'm hesitant to because of matts! I comb him every other day with a comb and a brush and yet I still find matts as I pet him the same day or the next! It drives me insane!!!! I have taken to shaving them out but could I ask if any of you have any advice for me? I know his harness may cause some matting but he only wears that every other day and the matts are on his legs where the harness doesn't go. I don't use conditioner on him so is this causing a problem? Any advice would be gratefully appreciated and many thanks in advance! |

| Conditioner will definitely help. I wouldn't be able to get a comb through my boys' silk coats without conditioner. I also find that the cleaner I keep my boys, the less tangles they have. It's hard to find a balance during the winter between keeping them clean and not torturing them with too many baths. Make sure you are finishing with a fine tooth comb to ensure no little tangles are lurking around. Small tangles missed by a brush lead to larger tangles.

Thanks for responding! I may try conditioner. I bathe Teddy twice a week at a minimum. I do worry about bathing him too much but his cottony fur picks up everything including smells so I don't see a way around bathing him. I tend to use a comb more than a brush because Teddy hates the brush for some reason! He is getting better but I don't see the point of making him tolerant of the brush when it doesn't do the same job as the comb. I am going to shave parts of him off again tonight. He has a vet apt tomorrow and I hope they don't mention the various light patches of fur...ha.

| Legs are our trouble spot too, sigh. I suppose it is just easy for lilah to tuck them under her and wiggle more during a snugly evening brushing. Our next step (and a long overdue one) is getting a proper grooming table with a noose loop. I conceptually understood the importance of grooming for routine development when I originally got lilah but now I have hands on experience as to the 'why' of that, lol- and I swear we will not have another Yorkie before owning a grooming table!

Yes, I think you're right about the table and noose loop! I didn't realize I was going to have a cottony coated Yorkie and wouldn't have understood the implications re: grooming had I known since I'd never had a cotton baby before! Well, I think I'm going to opt for a mobile groomer soon because I just don't know what else to do at this point apart from continue to shave him bald in some spots and hope his thick fur covers the damage..lol

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I have *such* trouble w/ matts on Marcel too...his fur is like the old "angel hair" you used to see a long time ago at Xmas, remember that? God I'm dating myself so much right now. Anyway, his hair is uber fine and tangles like crazy. You just look at his fur, and it jumps into a tangle, I swear. I've tried sooo many sprays and rinse out conditioners and leave-in conditioner and coat conditioners...and really, nothing actually helps. It's such a high maintenance texture!

For combing out legs, I use the clips that hairstylists use to separate hair segments when they are cutting human hair, the ones that slide in and out easily and clamp. I use them to hold the 'skirt' hair and beards out of the way to make it easier to get at the leg hair. Max and Teddy are pretty good about standing on the counter while I groom them. After a bath and zoomies, they are sleepy and tend to sit or lie down more so I have to coax them to stand. A grooming table is nice, but I don't think the loop is necessary. For me, I think it would be dangerous.

My groomer told me not to put around the neck area. Instead we put it where a harness would go. I think that makes it better.

| Some of my yorkies have had cottony coats also and my newest baby girl seems to have it too! I know how you feel I used to be a groomer many years ago and really have just found a product that's helped with my babies. Not sure what others might think about it but my little girl was always matting terrible she was one tiny cotton ball. Everyday I was challenged with getting the mats out! I finally tried Johnson's no more tangles using it first on dry hair. I sprayed the area that was matted and worked the Mat with my fingers. It did great because I wasn't pulling her hair it smells clean and softened the coat and helps give shine. After their bath and I towel dried them I spray the Johnson conditioner on the coat work through the coat. I then blow dry and brush. I felt if it was safe for infants and if used carefully would be helpful with my fur babies too!
