Conditioner will definitely help. I wouldn't be able to get a comb through my boys' silk coats without conditioner.
I also find that the cleaner I keep my boys, the less tangles they have. It's hard to find a balance during the winter between keeping them clean and not torturing them with too many baths.
Make sure you are finishing with a fine tooth comb to ensure no little tangles are lurking around. Small tangles missed by a brush lead to larger tangles.
