Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Never brush them dry? Dumb guy question #9,872 (this year): I've always heard to never brush our Yorkies while their hair is dry, but I guess I haven't paid attention to what you wet them with. I've been using a detangler spray, but I find that the more I brush and comb with the detangler, the more, for lack of a better word, "poofy" Jillie gets. Her hair is silky and thin, and it looks almost staticky. We use Coat Handler products that I've come to love. There's a 15-1 conditioner that I use straight without dilution after a bath. I'm wondering if I could dilute it 15-1 and use it as the daily combing spray?

| I don't know if anyone else has tried this, or if it works for anyone else.. but since Tashi's hair is fine and straight (almost exactly like my hair), I brush her hair like mine. I put a pea-sized amount of coconut oil on my palms, rub it together very well so it's liquified, make sure there isn't too much on my hands (if there is, i just rub it on my arms, etc) and then rub it through her coat before brushing. Personally, I find that it works better for her than any detangling spray I've tried. Sometimes I mist her with water lightly before I start, sometimes I don't. It's safe for them to eat, so I don't have to worry about her ingesting it while self-grooming. It has antibacterial/microbial proprieties, and it's healthy and natural, so it's become my go-to. Plus, no frizzies and no breakage. If you can see it on their hair, you put way too much. Edit: Tashi is by no means a show-dog, so if you're looking for show-dog coat, you might want to wait for some other posters to respond. This is just what I use to keep her hair healthy, with no tangles and no breakage. It keeps it pretty shiny, the pic I attached was about 4 days after brushing. I buy it in a 15 Oz tub for $7 with free amazon prime shipping. I usually split that tub into a couple of jars. One for my hair, one for cooking, and one for tashi's hair. The jar I use for tashi's hair is a repurposed caper jar, which holds about as much as 1 or 2 "travel size" shampoo bottles. I don't have to refill it too often. The one I buy is here , but the ones at the health food store should be just fine. Last edited by pandaleigh; 04-25-2013 at 03:16 PM. | |

| I brush both Jack and Izzy dry. Jack's hair is really fine and silky and really only needs brushing a couple of times a week. Izzy is more of a cottony coat and seems to get a bit "static-y" too. I brush her one to two times a day. Usually in the morning and usually at night. Since I am not showing either of them, I am not too worried about breakage - so far Izzy's fur has been fine and no breaking.

QUOTE] I've seen this written many times here on YT and don't get why. If yorkie hair is hair (not fur), and is like human hair, wouldn't the "to dos" "not to dos" be the same as caring for human hair. Brushing human hair when wet, causes damage, so I'd assume the same would apply to yorkies.

I brush and comb my guys dry for the most part, unless I am using Pet Silk silk serum for detangling.

| What type of brush do you use when you use the coconut oil?? Bristles or pin, or do you think it matters. I'm preparing a shopping list for when my boy comes. I already use coconut oil and have dry shampoo spray from pet head. |

Coming from a cotton coat human I can tell you that the worse thing that I can do is to brush my hair when it is dry. Plus if I dont put something on it, it will frizz. Our pups are the same way, like you said. Poof ! I never brush/comb my pups dry. I use a spray bottle with some conditioner in it. I've tried other over the counter product but they like the detangler just dont work as well and as you know get sticky and I think add to the problem with the clumping of the hair once they go out and role around on the ground. I'd like to find something that would make it shine too. I recently heard of Halo Dream Coat. I ordered it and have been giving it to the pups now for a little over a week. Crossing my finders that it help with shine and with their allergies as it claims to do so. I'll know soon enough!

| I always mist Mandie when I brush her. I don't like "wet her down" or anything. I alternate what I use. Some days, I use the Madan Brilliant Sheen Spray (it has a misting spray which I love and I also think the smell of it calms Mandie for grooming - just from experience with her). The other days, I use a leave-in conditioner spray that has argan oil in it. It also mists when it sprays. Mandie spends a lot of time outdoors playing so I feel it helps between baths to use sprays when I brush her. Otherwise, I think I might her her hair more brushing dirty hair while dry. With that said, I'm still searching for the perfect solution for her coat. It is beautiful but gets a little frizzy just along the spine and it doesn't really have that "yorkie shine" to it. I, also, have ordered halo dreamcoat but haven't received it yet. I have also ordered Yorkie Splash & Shine Shamp, Cond, AND their grooming Yorkie Sheen spray. She gets coconut oil everyday in her diet but I don't rub it on her hair.

| I admit I feel the same about detangling spray, it seems to make Luma frizzy, or did when she still had full coat. I would say most detangling sprays are better used as "finishing sprays" ie, brush their hair dry with a pin brush and lightly mist them (currently using Yorkie Sheen but not impressed...) then use a bristle brush to smooth the hair along the saddle part down flat. I use a metal flea comb/mustache comb to create the part. That's what works for Luma at least. I rub her tummy and paw pads (when they are looking dry) with coconut oil every once in a while. Dawn and Terri, please let me know how the Halo Dreamcoat works for your crew. We use it and it might have been me who suggested it, can't remember. I hope it works for you as well as it does for Luma!
