| Long coat advice My pup Sophie is about 4 months old. She has a silky coat and I am thinking about letting her hair grow out some. Right now her coat is 1 1/2-2 inches long....I comb it daily but it seems to get sort of tangled or stuck together (I think from being in the dew covered grass)...I've never had a silky coated yorkie in a longer cut only a soft coated that I kept in a puppy cut. Can anyone offer me basic long coat advice? Is there a product that keeps the hair tangle free and what are the best tools for combing/brushing the longer coat? Here she is a few days ago to give you an idea of her coat... |

| Her head looks silky, are you sure her body is. If it's getting tangled like that it could be soft. Mind you she is still young, so you could end up with a very silky, very soft, or very inbetween pup. I'm growing Maci's cotton coat out for winter, but keeping her belly shaved/trimmed as that is the only area that really mattes up and tangles. Sorry I don't have much advice for growing out... good food, regular grooming, and some good shampoo/conditioner!

| I have two in floor length coats. I wash them once a week. I like Biogroom shampoo (protein lanolin) and conditioner (silk) or Chris Christensen Day to Day shampoo and conditioner. I use the Chris Christensen ice on ice detangler spray a couple of times a week. It is a lot of work to keep them long. I comb them twice a day - I use a madan brush and follow with a steel comb. Also, don't brush a dirty coat or it will break.

| At 4 months, Sophie probably has a lot of puppy coat, which can be a challenge. Good products and lots of combing....and patience. Cathy gave great advice above for products. I also like to use a little PetSilk Silk Serum on Teddy before I brush and comb him.

| Pet boutiques in the States rarely have it in store. I order it through YT member Mimimomo.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | To keep a yorkie in long coat, you will need to groom daily and best to bathe every 4-5 days. You will always have tangles, there are products to make combing out tangles easier, but nothing will really prevent tangles. It's best to brush/comb out a coat using a detangling spray, never brush out a dry coat. To help prevent some tangles and better protect the hair, you can either wrap or band the coat. I use Iv San Bernard products (specifically use PEK conditioner), which are available in Canada, through their website. I like Chris Christensen brushes, the metal and wood pin brushes, also love our boar bristle brush, my favorite combs are a metal teflon coated (.....the only place I know that has the comb.....Dog Bows: Yorkie Bows, Maltese and Shih Tzu Show Dog Bows & Show Leads) and a Christensen butter comb. This is my Reno with long coat. He has a nice coat for a pet, but with wrapping/oiling, etc. could have a much prettier coat. Reno.jpg

| Brush, brush, and brush more. Lol. Rosie has a long coat. Like the others have said, bathing about once a week in a good shampoo and conditioner. I like Minksheen, Chris Christensen, Yorkie Splash and Shine, and Isle of Dogs. Detanglers are a must. I use the Ice on Ice and the Isle of Dogs Number 62. Both are great. A madan brush and comb will work wonders. Highly recommend these. Here is a picture of Rosie. DSCN0458a.jpg

| Ok...that all makes sense...I was brushing/combing dry so I will get some detangling spray. Sophie is just a pet but if I am going to let her coat grow out I want it to look nice. I will probably just do longer on the bottom and shorter on top. Is Buddy Wash and Buddy Rinse a good shampoo/conditioner? That's what I have right now. My yorkie that passed away was a soft coat...looked like a little bear. I really wanted another soft coat but the breeder says Sophie is silky....at what age does the coat change? and could her hair still turn softer? |

If she has a silky coat, it's not going to change to a soft coat. It can take up to 2 years for the adult coat to come in completely. Even at that coats can change throughout a yorkie's life, with aging, heat cycles, etc. Although you wanted a softer coat yorkie, silk is desired by many (it's part of the standard) also, silk is much easier to care for, soft coats tangle much more easily.

| Haha it's funny you WANT a soft coat :P so much harder to manage. But if you say her body already tangles easily it could be soft? The yorkies I've seen with shorter puppy coats that were silky wouldn't tangle unless they were constantly wearing clothing or just not brushed for a week. They should "stick together" that sounds like matting. But it's hard to tell from that picture of her and since she's so young! If she developes a natural part down her back, then she's proooobably silky. I think silk coats are just BEAUTIFUL!
