| Can a cotton coat not mat? I have a silky/yorkie puppy that seems to have a cottony coat. She is 4 1/2 months old and when you look closely about half of the hair almost seems to zig-zag back and forth on the ends. The other hair is mostly straight. I'm guessing that is what makes it look more fuzzy versus silky. However, I've read often that a cotton coat mats easily and I've had yet to encounter one on Isla (knock on wood). She's worn sweaters, wrestled with other dogs, rolled in the grass, etc. Since she hasn't matted yet I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on that-or what type of coat maybe she has? |

| I still am not convinced that the difference in coats is all in the eye of the beholder. It is hard to get a good to expert handle on identifying the differences. I have pups that have a thick cottony coat that will mat. After they shed this puppy coat they have a thin wavy coat. I have bought a male that has a long stringy coat but it is thin but it gets tangled but easily with applying a detangler will comb out. The hair falls wonderfully on his torso and does not bunch up . I talked to a groomer and the hair is scarce to fine on his legs and will probably grow and flow but it will not get that full look I fear. Getting a good detangler is a key to keeping coats from matting. If you get a handle on distinguishing these coats keep me informed. Even if you see the parents etc. I don't think you can ever really predict or get exactly what you wanted to see with a breeding. You try to get it down to a science but I still believe you can't totally manipulate or predict mother nature, or Gods divine creation. |

| Both of mine have cotton coats. Neither have a thick coat and Jewels lays down straight and both of their coats have a dry feel. They both matt and I am going to get them both shaved down

| Okay, so if cotton coats mat, at what age do they typically start doing so? Otherwise is it possible she still has her puppy coat? When does that usually grow out? I did try the camera flash technique and her eyes flashed gold. At 4 months is that too early? Also I've noticed the sheen of her coat in the sun and sometimes it's brown/red and sometimes it's bluer. I've also read that the brown hue can come from a hormone imbalance in the puppy stage. I'm just not sure what to think. Her coat does look awfully dry though. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Once when I mentioned to Roxie's breeder that her coat didn't mat even though she had a cottony coat she said it was because she was still so young (4 months) sure enough by 6 months she was matting a lot. I have attached pics of Roxie who is a cottony coat (first 2 pics) and Pixe who I think has a silky coat (last 2 pics) Roxie's coat only looks that good right after grooming. Pixie's always looks good.

| They are beautiful girls!!! Your cotton coat girl looks an aweful lot like my Isla. Not as shiny as the silky coats, huh? So have you found any tricks that help the cotton not mat so easily? I had a yorkie growing up and his coat was a long silky coat and that's what I'm drawn to. I would rather Isla's coat be longer than just getting a puppy cut so anything to help combat future mats would be appreciated!! |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Thanks. The only way I was able to get my silky coated one was I bought her when she was 13 months old. Actually her and Roxie in the pictures are related. They are both from the same breeder and Pixie's father is Roxie's grandfather. With Roxie I use Petsilk products which help her coat look better and I brush/comb her every day. I am starting them all on a supplement, Missing Link since Cali and Roxie's coats seem dry. I don't know if it will make a big difference or not.

| I was wondering this same thing. I know Zaccheus has a cotton coat, but have not had any problems with matting yet. But it's getting longer, and I suspect we will be matting more in a couple of months. He's 6+ months. He has a dull black coat. Last night I sat and combed Roxy and Cricket out. I hadn't combed them in a few days. They were pretty tangled, but not matted. Then I combed Zacchie. He screamed all the way through it. He's such a baby!

| I think Milo has a cotton coat, because he mats so easily!! He's seven months and when I take off his shirt he's completely tangled!! I bought him a detangler and I brush him, but his coat is very dry also. I've heard of fish oil, does giving them this make any difference on the coat? |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I thought matting was how you knew they had a cotton coat. Some silk coats are thick. I'm not sure if you are saying that your dog is part Silky and part Yorkshire terrier, and if so, that could account for the different coat. I know Silky's usually have silky coats, but they don't grow very long.

Yes, I was saying that I have a Silky Terrier/Yorkshire Terrier. She is now 7 months old as opposed to 4 when this thread started and she has started to get small mats under her back legs and sometimes really small ones on her hindquarters. They usually come out with the bath, lots of conditioner, and for really hard ones, spray leave-in conditioner and a comb. It seems that her hair does better with once a week baths, sometimes more frequently if she's dirty from outside or if she has food in her hair (I have kids that like to drop snacks ). I've heard you aren't supposed to bathe them that much, but she looks and FEELS aweful! Her hair actually looks drier without the bath! I don't get it! Anyways, I do believe she has a cotton coat now cause there just isn't any 'silkiness' to it. Oh well. I guess that means more grooming for me!
