Airline question and venting

To make a long story short they both screamed their lungs out for about two and a half of the three hour flight. It was insane I had my ipod on full blast and could still hear the screams right in my ear. Their were passengers 10 rows up that kept turning around looking p^^sed off. The 2 yr old kicking my seat so I turn and say your child is kicking my back. Their response is we'll try but she's a two year old. My dh had to grab my hand with the Calm Down look. I understand that you cannot have complete control over your children, but both kids screaming bloody murder the entire time of the flight is ridiculous. I'm pretty sure when your on an early flight and pay a good amount of money for your ticket as my dh and I paid for our tickets even thought we work for the company cause we didn't want to take a chance of not making destination because of holidays the least your entitled to is some peace. All this and my two yorkies who didn't even make a peep the whole flight get a hard time for wanting water. Sorry just had to vent.....

I was on a return Christmas flight out of San Antonio to Chicago. The plane was maxxed out and there were plenty of kids on laps. One woman decided to "discipline" her extremely tired/cranky two year old by slapping him with a thick leather belt and all the passengers sat there like idiots. Well, not me. I called the flight attendant over and said sternly and bitchily: Please take the belt away from her or I am sitting in first class. I haven't slept all night. I just left my son who is graduating from basic training and this is not fair." The belt was removed. The child continued to act up until I leaned over to my dad and said almost screaming with frustration, I wish that child would just SHUT UP!!! and the child quickly fell asleep. But everyone on the plane was talking about me. The crabby lady. Chicago looks beautiful at night.

I've never flown with a pet before, and I can't imagine not being able to take one of my little ones out of the carrier to hold!

I do want to share what happened with one of the guys I work with. He recently took his wife and 2 daughters on a trip to Colorado. On the flight back, a very young mother with 3 small children ( 1 was an infant) was trying to deal with all 3 crying and upset.

My co-worker and his wife were behind her and tried to help out when he casually mentioned how difficult it was to travel alone with children.

She told him her husband was in the back of the plane because there were several empty seats A lady across the aisle went to the back of the plane and told him to "get his butt back up there and help his wife with the children. Who do you think you are to leave her alone to take care of them?"

My co-worker said he and his wife along with a couple of other passengers clapped for this woman. The sorry excuse for a Daddy came back up and helped out after that.

I guess you have forgotten what it is like to be a child in pain and or afraid of something. There are always circumstances that we don't always know about.



I truly hope admin closes this as it has gotten FAR too off topic and has turned into people complaining about kids and not the original topic.

Not too far. Some of us feel we are getting cheated when WE PAY for our "kids" to be shoved under a seat while the screaming child in front of us just smacked us for the third time with a flying bottle. Venting is good. Most of the kids don't look in pain to me. We are either still on the tarmack or been up in the air for an hour when they really let go and MOM AND DAD ARE OBLIVIOUS. I have received more nasty looks and comments about the dogs in the bags THAT I PAID FOR, than bad mom and dad get for IGNORING their probs. Shew. The parents truly trying to alleviate the prob, get my understanding. The ones that sit there and put ipod buds in and IGNORE, well they get something else. But I am always chided on bringing pups aboard. And I pay extra.

Barbra, don't forget, we have to pay to bring our kids on too. I agree, if the parent is doing nothing, then yes...it is a burden. But, there are a lot of generalized statements flying around here and they are not fair to those of us with kids and fur kids. I can only imagine the looks I will be getting with a 4 year old, a 2 year old and 2 Yorkies in tow from Tokyo to LA.

Sorry if I am a little sore about this as I don't think it is fair to categorize most kids in this type of behavior when a lot of people posting here are arguing for the people generalizing about their pups. It isn't fair for the dogs nor the children to be put into categories.

Not being nasty but this is a Yorkie talk site. Sorry, I thought most airlines didn't charge for babies on laps, my bad. And you're right. Parents doing nothing of BOTH children and Pets acting up can be a big headache. I personally wouldn't allow my children to scream kick yell, stiffen up etc while I sat there turning the pages on my inflight mag. There are times when they could try to take it somewhere in the back and compromise, but usually *it* began when the seat belt restriction was on. And I understand the need for the pets to be contained - I fully agree and comply. It can be a fun time, it can be horrific. It's just nice to see what others feel and think and I think and feel we pet owners sometimes just get that nasty end of those stix and we pay sometimes what it might cost for a CHAIR.

Wow..this thread is old and got a bit off topic. But I think the point is, yes maybe the flight attendent was rude. And the OP was upset because she had to keep the carrier under the seat. But I think if the OP had fully researched the airlines policy prior to flying she would have realized this was the case and been less upset. I have yet to fly with my baby yet, but I've read up on the pet travel policies for all the US airlines for when I am ready to take her someplace, and as a result would not be the least bit upset I couldn't have her on my lap - because I know its against the rules.

I guess my child would be considered one of the bratty kids you guys are referring to. my daughter got hurt before the flight so when we boarded she was crying, she was in pain. for most of the flight she cried and I thank god that the people next to us were so nice. They offered cookies etc to try to calm her down, of course nothing helped because she was in PAIN. I cant imagine what would have happen if I had rude,nasty people next to me that would have given me nasty looks and attitude...cuz I tell you there would have been screaming and it wouldn't have been just my daughters. They are children...period. its unfortunate for the people who don't understand that. should i have canceled my flight because my daughter was crying? I think not...I paid to be on that plane like everyone else. what everyone fails to realize is that you are comparing a dog to a child and there is no comparison.

Now you understand what the pet people go thru and their pets are just sitting there in a bag that they paid to carry on, not to mention losing one carry on, and shoved under the seat. I believe most of the people are upset when it is children acting up not in pain, that are being ignored by their parents that seem so wrong, kwim?

Maybe she should have gone to a doctor instead of board a plane and crying the most of the time?????

I think its safe to assume that you have no children because my daughter had fallen and scrapped her knee....I was not going to cancel my family vacation because of a scrapped knee. nothing a doctor could do, that I didnt do. does that answer your question or do you need further explanation?

Wow. A child is a child and clearly they are not going to be put in a carrier under a seat, my gosh. Yes, it's less than ideal when there's a child throwing a tantrum, but they are a child and sometimes they do that!

I also get upset when I'm flying and the parents are not trying to keep their children occupied and therefore they become restless and upsetting sometimes to the rest of a flight. I can understand that, but I don't blame the child, it's the parent that is at fault.

I definitely wish that the airlines would reconsider the rules and allow the furbabies to be upgraded to a seat, or to let us hold their carriers on our laps. But I also think with proper practice leading up to a flight with most furbabies, they would do fine.

I don't have children yet, but I would suspect it's much more difficult to travel with them than with a yorkie

I agree, we should be able to hold our dogs or have them in the seat next to us, it isnt fair that you pay and they are treated so badly. as far as the kids being kept occupied, it is so true. my kids had a bag full of stuff from nintendo ds to coloring books, word puzzles,reading books etc. you wouldnt believe how much that helps.
