| Toe nail break, way short I finally found this on Adonis last night. Him and Venus would play, and he'd yelp really loud and not walk on this foot for a few minutes, and lick it constantly. I clipped the hair on his paw, and discovered this on inside nail on his back right paw, looked like its broken at the cuticle (for lack of better yorkie words). But its not broke all the way off. We have an 11:30 appointment to have it removed. They say it'll hurt and bleed, but it needs to be removed the rest of the way off. I have to agree, cause seems when him and Venus play she gets it every time again. I never have noticed any blood on it. But he licks it a lot. He did let me examine it last night. I didn't see blood, but when I wiggled it, he yelped. I could see its broken almost in 1/2. Still no blood. I think this happend one day on the sofa, about a month or so ago. I used to keep an afgan on it, cause he liked to lay on it. His paw got stuck in the afgan and I helped him out of it. I didn't know he'd wiggled enought to break that nail. I never noticed him licking it that much when this happend. Its just been this last week, he's been doing all the licking, and yelping loud when Venus grabbs it playing. Something I really need to learn to do is clip his nails. He's never had them done. Honest to God, till I got on this forum in August, I had no idea dogs needed their nails clipped. Had I been clipping them, I'm sure I'd noticed this right after it happend. Wish us luck, and pray for us, as we go to the vet to have this done in 2 hours. I'm so scared for him. Its going to break my heart to see him bleed, but I know this needs to be done now. If it were down by the bottom part of the nail, instead of the top, I'd do it myself. But its way too far up there for me to attempt. They said he might also need some antibiodics. This is the first thing thats ever happened to him in the 5 years I've had him. It will be our first "emergency" with him. Scaring me to death. |

My furkids Donating Member | I feel bad for your little guy! That must hurt. Be very careful if you cut his nails...you have to make sure you don't cut the quick, which is hard to see because their nails are black. This is what I do...Sadie DOES NOT like having her nails cut so,,,,,when I give her a bath (every 2 weeks) I put enough water in the sink to cover her feet, this will soften the nails and they won't make quite a "click" sound and scare them...this has worked for me...I started cutting Lillies as soon as I got her...she is now 22 wks old...I do need someone to hold her because she is a puppy and wants to play..but she is easier to do than Sadie. Do you think maybe he was born with a defective nail? I would have thought it would have bled if he pulled it that bad. poor little furguy! Good Luck at the Vet!

| If it bled, he licked it as soon as the blood came. I never saw blood anywhere. And the afgan, is light beige, and there was no blood on it either. But he couldn't get himself out of it, and I had to help him. The afgan has been put in a room my dogs don't go into now. And when him and Venus played, and it got hurt again, he'd always let me look at it. Was always wet from his licking, but I never saw blood. Had I ever seen blood, we'd went to the vet long time ago. I thought for a while, it was just a spot on the foot that Venus would bite when they played. I found this last night, when I finally cut the hair on that foot, to see if I could find something. That one nail looked funny after I got the hair off the foot. I wiggled it, and finally found its cracked, way way up top. Thank you for the tips on cutting nails. Yea, when they're soft would be a better time. I need all the tips I can get. This ought to be intersting, cutting his nails after 5 years! But I was able to get him to wear a top not after 5 years, so all hope isn't lost. Soon as I get the nail cutter, I will start on Venus too. She's only 5 months old. Earlier the better. I'm so scared already. Adonis is like my best friend. I'll be glad when 11:30 is gone, and this is all over with. |

I think the breeder (where I got Sadie) might have try clipping her nails and might have hurt her and this is why she gave me such a hard time...she is so much better now....don't get me wrong, this is her favorite thing to have done...but, it has gotten easier..

| Ok, I'm making my Petsmart list with your replies! Thank you so much for the information! Depends on how he's doing, we might make a Petsmart run before we come back home. If he's not doing well, I will bring him home first before going to Petsmart. I hate this, it breaks my heart, knowing my stupidity could cause this. And seems most of the time, he'd walk on that foot just fine...till him and Venus would get playing, and she'd nip him on it again. Could she have caused this to begin with? Maybe it wasn't him getting his foot caught in the afgan? |

| Afgan was put away right after this happend. He was yelping, as he was trying to pull his leg/claw out of it. I wasn't about to risk that again. After this trip, its going to be really interesting trying to ever cut his nails. No wonder I couldn't find much of anything using the search forum. I tried "nail cracked too short" and "nail broke too short. Not "nail got caught". I use this search engine sooooo much! I have 2 afgans. But one is on a sewing machine, where they can't get to, cause my great grandmother made it for me. The other used to be on the sofa. Adonis loved laying on it. But after that...it went in the guest room, which stays shut off. I don't think 11:30 will get her soon enough for me. I am about 5 minutes away, but will leave at 11, to get there early. I hope he does ok enough for a trip to petsmart. He needs a good treat after this. |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | POOR little guy - all the best to you ! That does sound really painful - I hope it goes well and he'll be on the mend before you know it... on nail cutting - that's one of the hardest things to do with yorkies - my Cocker is great about it but the yorkie girls act like I'm doing Chinese Torture on them - IF you can't cut them yourself - many vets will do it for a minor fee |

| Oh, btw....thank GOD for this forum. I've learned so much in the short time I've been here! I feel like I'm a better Mommie now! Also, I don't feel I'm going through this alone. I will be starting to spay Venus next month too. Which scares me to death putting either of these under anesthesia. |

| He never acted in pain much red98vett. Only time he ever acted in pain, was when him and Venus would start playing, and she'd hit that foot. Shortly after licking it, he seemed fine. Would walk on it, but wouldn't want her to play with him for a while. I'm just so glad you all are here for me. Another 10 minutes and I leave with him. Keep him in your prayers. I just hope they don't want to knock him out to do this. |

| I always trim Lucy's nails after her bath when they're soft, too. I leave her wrapped in a towel and take out one paw at a time to trim. She's used to it now and doesn't fight me at all. I trimmed them for the first time the day I got her. I used baby nail clippers because they were so tiny! Now I use the same clippers on Rebel.

| He did great at the vet!!!!! But it did bleed, and he did let out a yelp. I was shocked when the vet said the rest didn't really need clipping! I suppose its cause he walks on my 12x26 patio a lot. She clipped a couple more after that, and one did bleed. I asked what to put on it if it started bleeding again, and she said Corn Starch, or red pepper ( ). The visit cost less than the clippers I bought! They only charged $10.50 for the vist. We went to Petsmart afterwards. I got clippers and Styptic powder (sorry no red pepper on my babies feet!). Suff looks like the same color stuff she was using! Now that I'm home looking at it, the stypict also comes with the clippers too. I'm sure it cost a lot more than corn starch but my babies deserve the best. And I got this boy some beggin strips, since I couldn't get him interested in a toy. I know he likes them, my sister gives them to her dogs, and when he's down there, he gets one too. He deserved something yummy after going through that. I was so afraid they were going to ask me to leave the room! I just know I'd die in the waiting area, especially if I heard one yelp out of him. I heald him while they did this, with my face really close and talked to him the whole time. He was a champ through the whole thing. Thank you all so much for being here! This place means sooo much to me! |

| Well, if its a home remedy, my vet suggested it too! He's doing just fine tonight, and like nothing ever happened. |
