| Large Lump in Penis Help! I hate for this to be my very first posting - I much prefer to lurk in the shadows and try to learn as much as possible from reading - but there is nothing under the search words of "lump in penis" and only one posting under "swollen penis" which doesn't quite fit the situation here. NOTE: I'm inserting this paragraph here to save you from reading all the details you probably don't need for this instance. After this paragraph, the detailed stuff picks up again. Here's the problem. Mikie has twice had large swollen, hard lumps in his penis upon being let out of his night time crate. Once a week ago. At the time I thought it was due to a belly band and threw it out and prayed I hadn't ruined my baby for life. He returned to normal after an hour or two. Today, the same thing happened, only he is not using belly bands, so I'm thinking I was "off" about thinking the belly band caused it. He has no aversion to peeing or poohing in his crate and/or body painting in it afterwards (Not his fault - the Mill kept him in a cage for 4 years ) , I noticed it as I was cleaning him (which I do quite often around here ). I took him outside, he found a loose board in my fence and made his escape while my handicapped azz just stood there in my jammies. After retrieving a flash light, ten long minutes later, I found him coming towards me on the sidewalk. He could easily have been killed by feral animals out here, or injure himself ! (he thinks he can jump, but can't do stairs) . After getting into dry clothes, I saw the ""lump" was almost completely gone. But I am still worried. The lump was the size of his balls or a large quarter sized 'ball' located about two inches from the tip and about an inch from his balls. He had no signs of an erection. I've fixed the fence temporarily, but I'm very worried about Mikie. He's the sweetest most loving little fellow. Kind of like a fragile bird who rests it's head in your palm and closes his eyes. OH** I can not have him 'altered' until after his worming is done - and he is healthy.. I hope someone has experience with this. It's a strange early morning hour, but I'll keep checking back. THANKS! Mike's History Mikie is my first Yorkie. He's a 4 year old Puppy Mill rescue that was no longer needed for breeding. It's hard to know what life was like for him, but he was kept in a cage, taught to potty in his crate for four years, did not get proper exercise, has only one molar left and very loose knees. Everything is new to him, and me, as we try to adapt to a different world. I forgot to say that he was not 'fixed' by the rescue group. He came with some mutant fleas that filled the house and attacked my Bichon, who has many sores and crusty scabs and shaved areas now due to her allergies to fleas. They both had been treated for fleas, and I had Mikie bathed the day after I picked him up, and retreated him. That's a whole different issue though and not at all an emergency (though I am very worried about my Maggie) The rescue that got him, is a Coon hound rescue, so they're experience may not be as well as say a Yorkie rescue. I took him to the vet the first week, though he'd been reported as vetted . He was extremely lethargic, very weak, eye infection crusting his right eye. I was terribly worried he wouldn't make it. They did blood work and told me his knees were very loose and his lack of teeth and possible gum infection and eye infection. The bloodwork showed minor anemia and a minor deviation in the thyroid results which after further testing proved to be nothing. They gave me antibiotics for his eye and oral antibiotics for his gums. The rescue sent me Worming meds to give both dogs in two week intervals because they thought Mikie must have worms with his fleas and recurring lethargy . I gave him his first dose on the fourth. Wow , that's enough details. I'll have to take other concerns to their appropriate area, but I thought you would need a bit of his history. He's 4 years and 6lbs. Thanks |

| Poor Mikie! What a horrible life he had. And what an angel you are for rescuing him and giving him all the love and care he never had. I have absolutely no advice on Mikie's problem, but one thing popped into my head. I don't know if it's even possible, but could he be getting excited but not able to fully extend (pardon my lack of knowledge of proper terms in this area). Just a thought since it goes away and there are no other problems. I am sure someone will have better advice or information for you. There are many breeders who can help. I hope everything is ok for Mikie, he has suffered for long enough. Hugs to you and Roxy sends lots of puppie kisses to Mikie. Oh, and welcome to YT.

| Roxie, Diva and Yorkie Rose Thank you so much for responding first thing in your morning. All normal Yorkies were probably sleeping when I posted the problem. Roxie Jo's Mom: I love your attempt at putting it 'delicately'. I'm pretty sure it's not a 'partial' because it's normal both before and after the lump. Thanks for the reply, and Mikie thinks Roxy Jo is a "really hot babe" . Yep, those were exactly the words he used to describe her. I suppose Mikie is still eager to please as it's probably the only thing he got praise for in the past. Maggie set him straight from the start it's no problem. Plus he can't catch her . He goes for everything else on four legs though. Diva Puppy and Yorkie Rose: I'm glad it's something simple and normal. You sound pretty certain and that's reassuring. I searched high and low for info on it while waiting, and found nothing. Nada. I should mention that urinating is what starts his return to normal. It takes a while, but it's clearly better after he's marked a few spots outside. It's not like he's holding it while in the crate, because, well, he doesn't. As a matter of fact, it's the only place he will pooh. Hmm, maybe I'll start moving it towards the door where the wee pads are. No, he's not fixed yet. I've only had him 3 1/2 weeks now and he's been too sick. But we've got his blood work out of the way. Once he's de wormed, I'll ask the clinic about it. Sadly ( and that 'wouldn't you know it' timing ) Maggie's tearing her skin up so I've been treating her wounds twice daily ( though, I think I can drive now and get her some children's benadryl (sp?) - we all have fleas - . When it rains it pours. Mikie had to stay in his crate alot. And I just knew there was a mess in there when I crawled to the bathroom. I could see his little face looking up at me - and you KNOW what a Yorkie can do with that face. I feel so very guilty. The toilet broke this morning too. I need some serious ice cream. And a plumber. Wait, a maid first, because we can't have the plumber seeing the place like this.. HELP ! Thanks for the welcome. You're very kind. I would love to be able to read something about this gland thing . Do any of you know where I would begin to search for it ? Some type of veterinary guide or keyword ? Thanks again. I'll check back for more info. Angel , Maggie and Mikie : (aka: Studley) Last edited by admin; 12-10-2006 at 02:21 AM. |

| The first time I noticed Logan having these lumps was shortly after he was neutuered, so I took him to my moms (big animal expert) to see if we needed to call the vet. By the time we got there they were gone (like 5 minutes). He has sense gotten these lumps on & off, it's usually when he first wakes up or starts to get excited. It has something to do with getting an erection. Like when he gets excited those glands fill with blood or something (this is just speculation). I did talk to my vet about them & it's nothing to worry about, it's just more pronounced in some dogs. This was my first male dog so some of these things are a little bit shocking.

| glands Do a serach on the internet for "canine bulbus glands"...they are two glands on the side of the penis that swell during mating..they are what causes the dogs to "tie" or lock together during the breeding...neutering will help, but it may take a long time in a male that was used for breeding...but in any case it is totally harm free... I have had qutie a few stud dogs and know this is okay. |

| Awww, Roxy is so happy to have an admirer. She loves all the attention she can get. You will have to post pics of Mikie for us. I am sorry you are having such a difficult time right now. Mikie knows how much you love him because you rescued him, so I'm sure he won't mind a few inconveniences until you are feeling better. But I know how well they can use "The Look" to make us feel guilty. LOL They are pros at that. Sorry about the fleas, they are such a pain when they get a good grip on a household. I had a cat one time that lost 7 lbs before I found out that he was allergic to the flea bites. Good thing he was a big cat. Sending prayers that things start working out for you and your babies and you all start feeling a whole lot better. Mikie and Maggie are lucky to have you for their mommy. Take care and God Bless PS - So glad you found out the lumps are normal. See, I am such a doltz when it comes to that stuff.

| Mikie and Maggie are both Well [F]Thank you PonyUp, Yorkie Rose and RoxieJo's Mom for all the info. I am so relieved to hear Mikie is fine. Hearing it from a breeder lends more assurance. Roxie Jo's Mom - I think the fleas are finally handled. At least Maggie's allergic reactions and scratching. I read on here about using quick dissolve children's benedryl (cut to size) with your dog for allergies and found some at Walmart. I used it right away, and what a difference ! And she didn't get sleepy either. I also found some flea spray for dogs that kill the fleas and eggs ( I only had the household 3 in 1) and while using it, found a little nest of hidden terrorists in her thick thick hair. I never took joy in watching something die before. Also, today, my order for Revolution arrived in the mail and I was able to treat Maggie and Mike at the same time. I'm so glad for the benedryl tip on this site. Maggie was really looking pathetic, constantly tormented and I was about to take her to the vet. I was well enough to walk a bit today, so we all had a grand hour outside in the sun while teaching Mikie how to walk with a leash and he did great. He's not used to much walking yet either, so we both took rests after short stints. He was such a happy camper. He really came ALIVE outside. He fell asleep in the ( just mowed) grass and you almost couldn't see him there. But seeing how he was outside; the life in his eyes, made me think how he'd be so good with a family who can take him for walks... and also provide a safe place for him of course. As beautiful as he was too look at, I hated to think about it, but I can not provide that type of life. Just a simple walk once or twice a day would make him the King of the hill. I haven't made any permanent decision, or spoken to the Rescue about it. But our 30 day testing period is almost at an end and I won't be able to waffle for long. Mikie was SO happy out there today. U know ? He's snoring peacefully beneath my chair right now . And Maggie's asleep on her private chair next to me. Ahhh, the benefits of seniority. Mikie and Maggie are both well now. All is well. I wish Mike's knees were better though. They pop in and out of joint so easily. I would love to a picture of Mikie. My digital camera broke and I'm using film, so it will take a while. He's quite a handsome dude. Biscuits to all ! Angel Maggie and Mike Last edited by admin; 12-08-2006 at 11:16 PM. |

| Both dogs are well now. Thanks ! [F] Strange . I had posted another report and response to PonyUP and a couple other folks, but their posts and mine have all disappeared. Do the moderators delete them when they feel they're not Emergency or Health related issues ? They were all definitely related only I tend to add alot of other stuff. Anyway, to cut it short, Both dogs are well now. Fleas and allergic reactions to them are all gone now. Yeah! Mikie has had a small swelling since, but is fine. Thank you all for your kind words and input! Angel Maggie and Mike ( Mr. Studley ) |
