| Panicking yorkie Hi everybody I've never used one of these before hopefully I do it right. My Jasmine will be 15 in July she's in good health although she does have a collapsing trachea a kidney disease and she's completely deaf however the vet said she has a good quality of life and is in good health for her age. I recently left town and my Jasmine had some trouble at my sisters house while we were gone she threw up had a slight seizure and paced the house and wouldn't sleep very much at all this is not her normal behavior so I was concerned and looking forward to getting home to see her I assumed she was just upset that we had left, although she's never responded to separation in that way before. So I got home about 10:30 Saturday night went to bed and at 1 o'clock in the morning she woke us up screaming frantically we held her and she urinated on me she defecated on my husband and was looking around the room straight through us as though we weren't there. She was fighting to be put down so when we let her down she ran around the house bumping into things and would get herself stuck against a wall or in a corner and would just scream. After a moment she stopped bumping into things but continue to want to run frantically around the house it was as though she was trying to get away from something but she would not let us comfort her so after a moment we were concerned with her heart rate and her frantic breathing we took her into the emergency vet. They did bloodwork and said she has an infection gave her an antibiotic and a steroid shot to calm her down we slept in the car outside of the vet all night just in case she had another episode we wanted to be close. (We love our baby don't judge lol) Throughout the night she had quite a lot of gas some of it with mucus coming out of the same time. We suspected that maybe her food had made her sick so when I got home I made rice with carrots and potatoes and that's what we've been feeding her. She slept quite a lot of the day Sunday and at 6 o'clock I thought she was feeling better so I let her out to use the restroom and she did it again ran around the backside of the house and was trying to get into the back door this time she did let us hold her although she fought to be free you could tell she wanted to be with us, this episode only lasted about 15 minutes in comparison to the hour of the night before. I took her to the vet Monday (her vet, not my favorite but one that works at her clinic & has seen her before, my second favorite) and he said she has colitis & as far as the episodes he didn't know why she would behave that way I asked if he thought it was extreme pain from colitis and he said that is possible but not normal so he couldn't say that that's what was causing it. I asked if it was simply in an emotional reaction to me leaving town and he did not think so although he said that it could have made her symptoms worse he did not think it was the cause. I noticed that every time she had an episode she urinated and defecated throughout the day Sunday she would urinate fine but the next time she had her episode at 6 PM was when she was trying to defecate after that she defecated again and ran away from it as though she was afraid of it since then her bowel movements have become more normal and she has not had an episode since 6 PM Sunday. From Sunday at 6 o'clock to now Tuesday morning she has had many bowel movements more than normal. But she has not had another panicked screaming running episode since then. My question for all of you is have you ever heard of this behavior, do you have any thoughts on what has caused it? If it is emotional what can I do to help her I do not have a lifestyle that I can stay home with her all day every day I am for now until she gets completely better but I can't risk her ever going through something like that again it was horrible. If your recommendation is to give her medication to calm her what would you suggest I give her I'm not a huge fan of drugs but she is very old and right now I'm more interested in her quality-of-life versus quantity because I don't think I have that much time left with her so I just want her to be comfortable and happy. If you have questions about for instance why is a suspect her food please feel free to ask or if you need clarification of anything in my story please send me questions I'm home I'll be watching the form thank you all so much for your time. ( BTW I'm not very good at this hopefully I will see your questions and figure out how to respond ) |

I'm not a Vet, but you should watch her closely. My little boy Titan had similar problems, he was just 5 years old. Wouldn't sleep, run around with no purpose, far away look in his eyes, panting, but no potty accidents. With many Vet visits, many different opinions, he was finely diagnosed with GME. A brain disease that is fatal. Not saying this is what you are looking at. She is much older than my boy, so there could be many possibilities that can be managed. Thinking of you & the little angel 😇Good luck & keep me informed.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | The "looking thru you" and running/moving frantically sounds either like a seizure or reaction to extreme pain. The urinating and defecating can come w/ any seizure, but could also be from extreme pain. Treat any colitis, that's number one. If she has any seizures at all, she should be on seizure meds like phenobarbital or similar. What is she on for seizures? I don't think any of this has to do with an emotional reaction to you being out of town. Except for the fact that colitis can be triggered/worsened by stress...as can anything w/ the GI. So sorry she has gone thru this, bless her little heart. If/when you think she is getting doggie dementia, you may want to consider Anipryl.

| Update on Jasmine Gosh thanks guys I really appreciate y'all responding! I will keep an eye on her & ask her vet about that gme I've never heard of that. The vet does think she's going a little sinale. She hasn't had one of those episodes still since Sunday at 6pm, that makes me happy . But she isn't sleeping well at night at all, she walks around us (we are sleeping on the floor until she gets better so she doesn't jump off the bed while we're asleep) most of the night. And in the day time she sleeps better but still struggles to get comfortable. Her stool is looking more normal in shape, but still pretty soft (she's only eating rice, carrots, potatoes,& apples so maybe that's why) and there are still some dark spots like she may still be bleeding some from the colitis. I think she's getting better but I'm still watching her closely. I ordered Hills dd canned food from the vet it should be here tomorrow but we are leaving town tonight the vet said her current diet will do fine until Monday. She isn't on any seizure meds we've always managed them in the past with her diet. I haven't seen her have one since forever ago I was surprised when my sister said she had one after vomiting bile at her house. The vet said if she has more of those episodes he will send her to a neurologist. So far she hasn't had anymore so I'm leaning towards that behavior being caused by sever pain from the colitis. What do y'all think? Does that sound plausible? Thanks again will you all get this response or do you have to come back here to see it?? |

| Old dogs can get dementia. There also is medicine for it. She could be having bouts of it. You might want to bring it up with your vet.

| My Max starting having terrible night episodes when he reached 14. The vet called it night time dementia. It was so sad. The only way I could calm his was to carry him around the house. I think some of it was congestive heart failure was filling his lungs when he would try to sleep. I'm so sorry you are going through this. It was a very difficult time.

| My Duchess has bouts of colitis but she has never experience any pain with her colitis. My last yorkie went through something similar. The vet prescribe pain medication until we could figure what was wrong. Her pain was so extreme that it was blinding her. Her waves of pain was occurring monthly. I was reluctant to put her to sleep because in between those episodes she was fine. Unfortunately, my little one decided she wanted to go over the rainbow bridge and I let her go. When they bump their heads and get stuck in the corners of the walls, that is a sure sign they are in extreme pain. My Brandi went through the exact same thing. You might want to do more extensive testing to find out what's causing the pain. If you ever see this, again she will need pain relief. My Yorkie's pain was so server, she went blind for the time she was in pain. That's when the vet prescribe pain meds for her. The pain meds worked almost instantly and basically put her to sleep for 12 hours. When she woke up, she would be okay. Unfortunately, her quality of life deteriorated in a month and that's when we both knew it was time to say goodbye. RIP Brandi. |

| Jasmine had a really bad night, we are staying in a hotel & she was basically up all night. She is finally laying on my lap now. I asked the vet about her heart & he said it was strong but now I'm wondering cuz she does wheeze more now & has ever since her dental & teeth extraction in February. They told me it was stress put on her collapsing trachea by the tube down her throat. I decided not to get the Hills dd, I'm going to make her food myself so if any of y'all have trusted sources of suplaments or recipes for yorkie's with kidney disease please let me know. Today I'm going to try & find a holistic pet store & look for something to help her sleep...any suggestions? My vet suggested melatonin or benedryl. Thanks so much for the support everyone it feels like you care about her too, I'll keep you posted. |

To me, it really does sound like dementia, and I really do think you should highly consider Anipryl - it can utterly *change* an elderly dog's life around, just like that. It can realllllly help their brain/anxiety/restlessness change markedly. I know Benadryl sounds logical here, and I get where you're coming from...but it's not wonderful for elderly dogs or humans - it can have an opposing effect. The Melatonin may be more worth adding, though I wouldn't expect a large change with it...it's not really that kind of med...but like I said, may assist a tad. Keep us posted. Hoping for great outcomes for you and your kiddo!

YT 500 Club Member | To be on the safest side I would want a specialist to see her & know all the issues she has had. I wouldn't give her anything on my own. Since she has had these symptoms, she probably will have them again. If you do decide to see a specialist get ready for Hugh amounts of money. My Titan was treated for 2 years from the University of Tennessee Vet Hospital. They do excellent work. They gave him 2 years of quality life, but couldn't save him. Thinking of her, bless her heart & yours.

| So thank you all for your replies especially the one about Anipryl. Yesterday the vet did an X-ray, I brought her in bcz she is gagging & coughing up mucus from her nose. The X-ray showed her lungs are clear but she has a lot of mucus in her trachea were it meets the bronchial. It also showed a strange thing on the top of her heart, the vet described it as a hat sitting on her heart. He has no idea what it is, he's never seen anything like it he says, it could be a tumor or an aneurysm. She would have to see a specialist. My husband & I decided against that for two reasons, her age & health coupled with the expense for one, and secondly she hates doctors! It doesn't feel right to stress her for something that may not save her. For right now she is on an antibiotic to see if it clears up, we should know in a couple of days. No solid decisions have been made however we are taking one day at a time & trying to decide what is best for her not us. |
