As for getting a second puppy when I did not have money. I knew my financial situation, I knew I could pay for a second puppy and I knew I had money for medical care if need be including shots, checkups and etc. I also know my vet and know that if need be she would let me make payments on any care that my babies need from her. To me there was no question that my babies would be cared for. Unfortunately I did not anticipate an emergency that would require going to another location and paying thousands of dollars. So you think I should not have a yorkie unless i have thousands of dollars put a way for medical. How many thousands? Where do you draw the line. Maybe I should wait till I have two thousand, no maybe I need to wait till I have five thousand, or wait that may not be enough, maybe I will wait till I have ten thousand. Who knows what may happen maybe I might need fifty thousand dollars, I better wait until I have a hundred thousand dollars before I get a yorkie, just in case something happens! Tell me how you draw that line.
That is something you failed to anticipate and the outcome could have been very, very different because of it.

You got lucky this time and I'm happy for you and your pup. But luck has a tendency to run out.

Please go back to your first post and re-read it. You were the one who brought up the lack of funds as an issue that was directing care. You posted it and people commented on it because that's what happens in a forum.

You might not like the comments people make, but oh well. That's life. No where did Ladyjane or anyone else say you don't deserve a yorkie because you don't have tons of money. That's your interpretation of what was said. For that you need to look in the mirror and find out why you are interpreting it that way. Perhaps you had a real scare and you are afraid that next time you won't get out of things so inexpensively. That's a legitimate fear and one we all have and need to figure out how to deal with.

The younger they are when you get the insurance the cheaper it is. I currently have VPI but would not recommend them as they don't cover genetic or preexisting conditions. Which of course mine had. I pay about 32.00 a month for each of my 3 dogs. I have heard good things about Trupanion Insurance.
Having the insurance gives me some peace of mind. My DH passed last year cutting my income in half, my DD has a chronic disease that has run her medical bills into the thousands just the past 3 months. Even with insurance she can't afford the balance so I help her. No I didn't expect any of the above to happen when I got 3 yorkies. Having the safety net of pet insurance is great peace of mind.

Im sorry I should have said "IF" anyone. I in no way meant that your vet was subpar or inadequate. I simply wanted to state to anyone who may be reading this that there are always other options and opinions that a second veterinarian may be able to shed light on or possibly find anther way, and even a better way to provide the proper care. Sometime even a less expensive way as well. And yes, I agree, having trust in the abilities of your vet is very important.

I know I recently has a very scary incident with one of my pups that took insisting that our regular vets see her before I get answers.

So, how is your pup doing today ?
Well I hope . .

My thought is get the insurance ASAP when you get your puppy, before any pre-existing conditions appear. That first year or so of a dog's life sure seems to be the most expensive with unexpected healthcare. Insurance can always be cancelled if you feel it wasn't a good investment, but to me the first year is definitely a great investment.

I have had many pets and have always taken care of them even choosing to care for them before myself but I have always managed. I have never purchased insurance and really never knew anything about it. Having people telling me how much money I should have in savings and that I should have insurance at the moment I had a puppy in crisis was not any help. Even if I had purchased insurance right then and there it would not have done any good right then. Planning on putting money away for a crisis would not put the money in my pocket for this crisis! Sure you say you wanted to give advice so I wouldn't be in that situation again...why not let me get through that crisis first, then share your opinions of what things work for you. Not put me down. because I did not do it your way in the first place.

My spare money and credit had just gotten eaten up by many unforseen things at once. I did not plan on being stuck with no money to fall back on. Don't get me wrong, i don't have a lot of money but I always try to make sure I have spare money and credit for ANY emergency. Unfortunately quite a few things happened around the same time that took that buffer away at the most inopportune time. Buying one puppy, then having medical bills trying to save it, buying a second puppy, and having my main car needing major repairs are all just a few of the things that have hit at once, leaving me with not much to work with. But I was still determined to get my Jazi help. Luckily my vet is a very good, talented and kind vet and far from incompetent! We talked about the options, she explained what she could do what the risks were and what other options I had and what those risks were. We then made a decision based on the circumstances as to which option gave Jazi the best chance for a good recovery. I told her to do what she felt was the best for Jazi as I know her to be a good caring person that really loves animals. She is not one of those vets that are just out to make as much money as she can. She does a lot of volunteering to help animals and she is always taking in strays and helping them and finding them homes or keeping them if she can't find them a suitable home. I knew she would take good care of Jazi! And she did!

Jazi is doing great today! She greeted me by standing on her hind legs on the pen gate, whining, barking and wagging her tail, wanting me to pick her up! When I did, she wouldn't stop kissing me, my face, my neck, my ears! I could hardly hold her still she was so excited and so energetic! She still has a cough but it is a lot better than yesterday. Her incision is healing nicely, no redness or swelling. I am very happy with her progress and will never be able to thank my vet enough for all she has done. Thank you all for the prayers that have gotten her through this.

You're welcome.

I agree about insurance, Care Credit, etc. I've seen so many animals euthanized because of finances (ER vets aren't quick to set up payment plans). But all you can do is be prepared for next time now.

Anytime there is a money issue or a perceived money issue on YT threads can get hairy. I've had to get to the point where I don't take what posters think so seriously because it was really not doing me any favors. I also had to come to realize that people are good at spending others' money. So I don't start many health threads on my pups anymore. I just keep it to myself and a select few. Much less stressful for me that way.

Just an update on Jazi - Jazi is doing great!

She does better each day. She is feeling so much better it is hard to keep her from playing with Mia. She is eating well and keeping it all down. She even looks as though she re-gained some of the weight she had lost. She still has a very, very slight cough and she is still on antibiotics. She goes back to the doctor tomorrow and I am sure she will have good things to say.

Again, thank you for all the prayers and good wishes from both Jazi and I.

Jazi is getting better and that is really all that matters, and I for one am so very happy to hear this update. Hope her vet visit goes well, I'll keep my fingers crossed for her.

Default Jazi's vet checkup

Jazi saw the vet and the vet was very happy with her progress! She is now able to resume eating her normal food and get a bath. She has gained back almost all the weight she lost. She was 3 lbs the day of surgery, she is 2.8 lbs today!

Plus she can play with Mia again! Mia is being so gentle with her, she has become a very good big sister in such a short time. I am very proud of Mia for being so good with her during all of this. It is amazing that they can tell when another animal is not well enough to play!

Thank you for all your support and prayers.

Great news on Jazi. I'm with Ellie May, I don't post anymore on my girls health issues. It's hard enough worrying about a health issue with one or sometime more of my babies. Then to have people imply that you are not doing what they would do. I don't need the grief I have enough in my day to day life. I know my girls get the best care. I respect my vets and at all times they refer me to a specialist if it is beyond their scope. I have access to a great specialty clinic 5 minutes away and for many years I think I kept them in business! lol I am just so glad it worked out for you and Jazi.

I agree. I spent over 8,000 on Cali the first year I had her even with insurance. She got sick during her waiting period and they pre existed on it and she was diagnosed with MVD which they denied as hereditary. I have thought many times to cancel the insurance as it is expensive for 3 but I love having the peace of mind.

I agree with you. My eyes are open now. I came here looking for prayers and good thoughts for my baby but said too much and got a lot of bad vibes. Luckily there were enough prayers to override the negativity and Jazi is now doing great. Thank you for your support. It is good to know there are people in this world that care about people and their babies.
Thanks again,
Colette
