| ![]() I was wondering if anyone has any experience with mammary cancer? I tried a search, but I only came up with a few old posts. My friend is fostering a 7-8 year old girl who was found on the West Side Hwy of NYC wearing a little pink sweater, with a top knot & was bloody from a ruptured tumor from mammary cancer!!! I can't imagine what kind of person would get their dog dressed & hair did before dropping her off in the middle of one of the busiest, most congested streets in New York City!!??! ![]() The doctors are in the process of making a decision as to whether or not to perform surgery. I can't imagine why they wouldn't...maybe it's a cost thing? I offered to sponsor her pending a conversation with the vet. But I'm curious to know if anyone has a pup who has mammary cancer - or if anyone knows if, since the tumor has ruptured...is it too late in the game to try & fix? My friend named her Sophie. I attached a photo. I'm waiting to hear from the rescue to see if the decision to proceed with her treatment is a financial issue - or if it's purely medical. Until then, please keep little Sophie in your prayers!

| ![]() I cannot imagine not doing the surgery unless something else is going on with her. Not all mammary tumors are cancerous and even if they are the pups often live a long time. Google mammary tumors in dogs and you will find a lot of information.

| ![]() LadyJane, I was so hoping you would see this post and reply! Thank you! Yes, I did a Google search & was also wondering why they are waiting to perform surgery. That's what got me thinking that it might be an issue of cost. It's good to know that it is possible for Sophie to recover if the tumor is her only issue. I am waiting to hear from the rescue to find out more details. However, the vet did diagnose cancer. She was not spayed. Thank you!

| ![]() Sending prayers and best wishes for Sophie. What a sweet sad face. As for the ex owner I am disgusted by their treatment of this poor baby. Many thanks to you and your friend for being her guardian angels.

| ![]() Poor little thing! Glad she's in good hands now. I hope money is not the issue, I'm sure they could raise the funds if they got the word out. Thoughts and well wishes for poor little Sophie ![]()

| ![]() She was found on the West Side Hwy early this morning. The pathology results came in at about 4 this afternoon. I'm not sure if they found any other medical issues. It would seem to me that there must be something else going on since the doctors have to make a decision about surgery. Since the tumor has actually ruptured, I'm assuming that the cancer is in the late stages. Maybe that's one of the reasons they are delaying surgery? I'm totally assuming all of these things. I haven't spoken with the vet directly. I've only communicated with the rescue & my friend who is fostering her. Sophie is hospitalized now & on pain killers until the vet/rescue decide what to do. I feel so bad for her, all alone, in pain. I just can not believe that someone could let a pup suffer like this & then have the nerve to dress her up and literally throw her on the streets of NYC! And apparently, if females are spayed before their first heat, they have a ZERO PERCENT chance of developing mammary cancer. Just one more reason to get your pet fixed NOW.

| ![]() My first yorkie had mammory cancer, I moved away and had to leave her behind with a family member for a year, I wasn't told she had developed a lump until she actually chewed herself open! Only then did they informed me of the problem and I took her straight to the vets who operated and removed the tumour. They said there was a chance it would spread in the future, which it did but they operated again and removed as much as they could but she was old at 12 and didn't react to well to the anasetic, so they closed her up before they could finish but she went on to live a further 3 or 4 years. She died at 15 years old. |

| ![]() Thanks for sharing your story. I have heard that if the tumor is removed, they can go on to live for many more years. It seems like your pup did just that! The rescue says that before they can perform any surgery, they have to wait 72 hours in case someone claims her. It's unlikely that she she ran out of someone's front door. We don't have front doors in NYC. We have doormen and lobbies. But she could have gotten off her leash. She was wearing a collar with no tags. The rescue is also getting a second opinion from another vet. I'll update when I hear news. I'm just hoping that Sophie will make it through the next 72 hours ![]()
