| Gatsby in surgery after vicious attack Our little boy Gatsby was attacked this evening on our regular walk. This Corgi (of all the breeds you would not think a Corgi would be dangerous) was off its leash and ran from across the street and without any barking or sniffing, just grabbed my little Gatsby in his jaws before I could do anything about it. I was shocked, and thought the stupid dog was just running over to sniff; I was really just concerned that this dog was going to be hit by a car. I had to remove its jaws from around the torso of my boy. I could not believe a small breed could act like that, when Gatsby did not provoke anything! Gatsby is a delightful eight pound Yorkie and this Corgi that attacked him was maybe a 25 lb dog. We took him to the ER straight away and he is there now awaiting surgery. X-rays showed that at least one of the puncture wounds could have damaged his intestines, since it looked like air was apparent in the x-ray. We are so sad about our little boy and still in shock. The initial payment for the operation was also a staggering 6K deposit/7K estimate if more aggressive treatment is necessary. We are waiting for the postoperative assessment. Just looking for thoughts and prayers from you folks and maybe some advise. I don’t like to post in this forum topic, its usually just sad and depressing, but I can see where it can help you to cope. If the owners of the Corgi (who seemed very sorry) do not pay all medical costs I am going to take legal action, that’s for sure. Should I report this to the police now, or see if they agree to pay all the bills first? I checked the dangerous dog registry we have in northern VA and this dog was not on the list (in fact there are only 2 dogs on that list in the entire zip code). I just need thoughts and prayers that he pulls though, he is only 3 1/2 years old and a wonderful pet. Last edited by shawnzeppi; 10-16-2011 at 06:02 PM. |

| Sending prayers.........Praying your boy will be ok & home soon. Also that you will have the bill taken care of. I can not imagine such a bill. Our vets here seem really cheap compared to there. My sons rat terrier had 8 cyst removed , teeth cleaned & some pulled.nails clipped & also my pom had teeth cleaning & some pulled.together the bill was only 500.00....And his dog had some major surgery in some areas. Sending prayers for minor damage & the surgeons to have wisdom........

| I just wanted to say how very sorry I am that this happened to your little Gatsby. I hope and will pray that he does well after surgery. I don't really know the rules and regulations in the US as we are from Canada. It does seem that this owner should take responsibility for your vet bills though, given that it was their dog that inflicted the injuries. If they knew their dog had the tendency to be aggressive like this then they never should have had him off leash. The cost of vet bills are really unbelievable nowadays. I can't believe that they quoted this much to you right at the onset. Hopefully some of the other members that live closer to you will be able to help you out more about what the specific bylaws are regarding vicious dogs in your area. |

| Healing Prayers I am so sorry for your boy Gatsy, what a tragic thing to happen and should not of happened, sending prayers your way. Yes Police report and with the Animal control for your city, you just never know if it has happened before or not but you should help to prevent future tragedies! Report so to prevent another incident from happening! , that is my person opinion, no matter if they do pay or not. Look into Credit Care to help with the bill if need be, we used that for our Shelby's diagnosis and surgery, now beyond $10k ! There will be of course follow up for him but I pray he gets through surgery and recovery so he can be at home with you again! God Bless and special healing prayers to you and your Gatsby.

| So sorry about your little boy! I'm sure the Corgi's owners would be held responsible in the eyes of the law. I didn't understand if you meant the bill was estimated at 6 hundred, or 6 thousand?

| Prayers are definitely being said for Gatsby. I am so sorry this happened. Who would ever have thought something like this would happen when you were just out for a walk with your baby. Please let us know how the surgery went and how your precious little one is doing.

| My prayers and thoughts are with you and your little baby!! Hoping for a quick recovery!! I agree to definitely file a police report AND with the animal control officer. One thing i have always learned is to always have a paper trail!!! You need it documented! Good luck with everything.

| Same thing happened to my Jilly and I am so sorry it happened again - this time to you and Gatsby. Of course you and your Gatsby are in my prayers. My little Jilly came out fine and wasn't even scared of other dogs after the attack so I pray your baby has a similar great outcome.

| I'm so very sorry. I hope he'll be ok very soon. You should definitely report it to the police immediately. That's so sad that you were just walking and that happened.
