and Bear too! ♥ Donating Member | has anyone ever dealt with hemorrhagic gastroenteritis? My 3 year old Yorkie/Maltese Rusty died on Monday 9/19/11 after a day of sudden vomiting and bleeding. He woke up that morning refusing to eat. I tried to feed him rice, boiled chicken breast and ground Venison burger. We have no idea what happened. I called the ER Vet clinic as soon as I saw him pass blood on Sunday afternoon. He passed some worms in the blood and the girl who answered the phone told me it was normal for a dog to pass blood and that as long as he was drinking he would be okay until I took him to my vet in the morning. I shouldn't have listened to her. I watched him all night long. At 6 am he had a seizure and collapsed. my husband called the ER vet and they said to bring him to my vet at 7:30. I took him to the ER clinic anyway because I knew he was dying. I got there at 6:36. The Dr. yelled at me and told me that my dog had been sick for along time and that he had been up all night with emergencies and he was leaving at 7 am. He gave my dog some subq. fliuds under the skin and put 2 hot water bottles on him to get his temp. back up and sent me out the door to my vet! I was in shock. We got to my vet at 7:20 and she took him in right away and tried to save him, with no luck. The vet has no idea what caused this to happen. she doesn't think the worms had anything to do with it. Five days later my male mix Ziggy started the same thing. I rushed him to the vet that Saturday morning as soon as he passed the blood. he wasn't vomiting. They started him on atibiotics and doggy Pepto. I ended up rushing him to the ER vet that afternoon because he vomitted and passed more blood. They kept him on IV and gave him meds and he came home Sunday afternoon. Still no answer as to why this happened. MyBlack Lab Leo started passing blood 2 days later. My vet put him on meds and he cleared right up. They are running several tests on his stool to see what this might be. The weird thing is that my girls Ella (a Yellow Lab) and Sophie (a Yorkie/Maltese) are fine. I would love to have some answers and both vets say we may never know the cause! |

| welcome to yorkie talk. i am truly sorry for your sudden loss of rusty, especially at such a young age. i sincerely hope that you have found much better help for your ziggy and leo and they are getting better. i wish the er clinic you took rusty to could have done more to help your poor baby. i have also had a bad experience with an er clinic, but i have fortunately found a different (im sure better based on recommendations) one in case of future emergencies and i suggest you do the same. first thought would be that they must have got into something? did you recently change their diet? did they eat any fatty, rich, spicy, or dairy table foods? has the vet determined what kind of worms were found and have they been treated for the parasite? 8/29/2010 i lost my precious baby girl nika to an extreme case of pancreatitis that was possibly hemorrhagic necrotizing pancreatitis. i woke up on a saturday morning to find her having bloody liquidy stools and vomitting. we rushed her right in to our dr's office but our regular vet was not in that day, she saw a dr we had never had before. they kept her for the day on fluids and ran bloodwork, stool tests, radiographs and made the above diagnosis. she was to go home for the evening as no one would be in overnight and come back first thing sunday morning for hospitalization again. later in the evening, nika collapsed and had a terrible seizure. i called 411 and found the after hours clinic a half hour away. we drove as fast as we could to get there, my fiance giving her kayro syrup the whole way to bring her sugar up, but she kept seizing. they finally had to give her valium to stop the seizing at the er. her temp was low too, they kept her on heating pads and on fluids. i visited her around 5am sunday morning, then went back to move her to the regular vet's office a little after 7am. 8 am the dr she saw the day before met with us to rehospitalize nika, she passed away around 930am. we have no clue what caused this to happen either. before that saturday morning, she was acting perfectly normal. eating, drinking, normal stool, etc. 30-some hours later, she was gone. it breaks my heart she passed so young. i think about her every day and miss her all the time. not knowing what the cause of this was doesn't help either. you will be in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. i wish i had more answers for you. how are leo and ziggy doing now? are sophie and ella still doing ok? | I'm so sorry. We're they all vaccinated? It spread, so it had to be "catchy". What is the bloodwork looking like? What food do they eat?

and Bear too! ♥ Donating Member | clostridium So sorry to hear about Nika. They were all vaccinated and the worm was tapeworm. My vet called with Leo's results yesterday afternoon and said he had clostridium. I guess it's a bacteria overgrowth that causes diarrhea. It's treated with antibiotics. He said he's still not sure if this is what Rusty had or not. From what I've read on my own, it appears to be contagious. Dogs can also get it from drinking out of mud puddles. |

| Clostridium could have caused the bloody diarrhea and such. It's difficult to figure out if this was the actual cause of the problem though because a lot of healthy dogs have it in their stool. What do your pups chew on (what types of bones)?

| So sorry for your loss. I know your heart is broken. I lost my darling Gina last year to this. She was sick for a while but I didn't notice any thing in particular until it was too late. Five days in the hospital, blood transfusions and nothing worked. Brought her home and she seizured the next day and we had to put her down. Saddest day of our lives. I still cry when I think of her and what a wonderful little girl she was. She was almost 12 years old.

and Bear too! ♥ Donating Member | I didn't even get 3 yrs with Rusty. It would've been 3 yrs on 11/1/11. He was such a playful little guy. He loved his toys. He was a Yorkie/Maltese mix but he had the face and ears of a Yorkie. His death was so sudden. I am so lost without him and so are Sophie and Ziggy. If anyone has a dog with bloody stool and vomiting, I strongly urge them to get to the vet a.s.a.p. |

| Bubba has had HGE. About 2yrs ago, he came in from the yard and asked to go out again. Drops of blood from his bottom dripped onto the floor by the door. I called the Vet and had him there within 15mins. They examined him but didn't know what was wrong, possible HGE, possible someone threw something into the yard and poisoned him (not worms-stool had been tested)(Sissy was fine). So they kept him, started and IV in his neck, sedated him to keep him quite (someone is there 24hrs a day). Next day he was worse, dropping hemoglobin and still bleeding. They gave him antibiotics, antifungals and plasma expanders. Next day he began to pick up a little and was doing better. They let me visit him a couple times every day and set up a chair by his cage, they would take him out, secure all his IV lines and put him in my lap and we would sit there and watch the vets and techs work. After a couple of days he stabilized and they sent him home on meds. Needless to say, Bubba loves to go to the vets and they love to see him.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am so sorry for your loss. My Cali had 2 bouts of HGE. The first one I got her to the ER vet when she first started to look sick, hunched over, not eating throwing up etc. They treated her for an upset tummy and I took her home. 2 days later she was worse so I got her in to my vet right away. They tested her and she had HGE. They kept her all day and gave her IV fluids and meds. Then each night I would bring her home with the IV shunt left in and take her back each day for more IV fluids. It took well over a week for her to get better. The second bout happened a few months later and as soon as I saw the look in her eyes and the hunching over I got her to my vet. She was just starting in again with HGE. We were able to treat it pretty quickly this time. The only thing I thought may have been contributing to it was the cow hooves they loved to chew on. Even though I changed them monthly. Once I stopped giving them any type of chews or bones other than nylabones she has been fine.

| This all sounds so painfully familiar! This time last year Bunkey (9yrs,poodle,5lbs) started having tummy problems. Between Oct and the end of Nov we did antibiotics 2 times, ran all kinds of tests,,no worms and then he seemed to be fine. Then in mid Feb he got sick again. On March 8 he woke me up having a seizure (lasted 2min,at 6am),I stayed up and was at the vets door at 8am. The vet drew blood for more blood work gave me specific feeding instructions and we went home (he had not lost weight nor was he dehydrated),he never quite recovered from that seizure and we were going to make an apt with a specialist for as soon as they could get us in. At 11pm Bunkey began seizing again (all of my other dogs would of usually run to his aid,but they all got up on the furniture and just sat,,they knew how bad it was). By the time we got Bunkey to the ER he had been seizing for 40min and had a stroke. He was given Valium. I was called at 2am and told that he was paralized,I told them that they were to keep him from seizing again and I would get him at 7am,they had him ready when I arrived. On March 9,2011 @ 9am,My lil friend passed away and I am still crying. None of the other 5 dogs have exibited any problems until two weeks ago,we own Bunkey's twin brother. I am so very sorry for your loss,I know that you are devistated. I hope that at some point you will be able to hang on to the good memories. |

and Bear too! ♥ Donating Member | Thanks to everyone for your support I had never heard of HGE before this happened. I can't believe it can happen more than once. The vet says we may never know the cause for Rusty's incident. It gives me some comfort knowing that I'm not the only one who's been through this. This is a great group for support
