| Please help- Bladder Stones- Need Surgery Hi everyone, Last Friday (so a little over a week ago) Bella was acting funny. My vet did not have any appointments and I knew she had a UTI by the way she was acting- my vet kept telling me to get a urine sample but I couldn't bc all she would pee at that point was little drops. So, I went to my old vet and they fit me in and my friends mom was working there so it worked out nicely to have her there. Long story short, bella has a bladder stone. The vet tech said he saw it through the ultrasound that he did. They put her on antibiotic for a UTI and then said I needed to come back in a week to get an X-Ray and she needed surgery to remove it. In addition she is on this special Royal Canin food for Urinary issues. I was in the middle of law school exams and so they said it was alright for me to wait a week for the surgery. My dad suggested that she have some laser done that breaks up the stones instead of surgery bc it is less invasive etc. I guess I just really need all your advice! I have tried online research on the laser but it is difficult to really figure out what is going on. In addition, I will be going out of town Friday- Sunday and then again Sat- Sat. So I am wondering what the recovery time is going to be for my baby. My sister will be watching her when I am out of town but I do not want her to be recovering without me. Any advice would be awesome! Thank you all so so so so much in advance!

| I'm so sorry to hear about this, Joy. Whenever you talk about her, I can feel the love you have for her. I can't offer you any advice, but want to let you know that I will be keeping you both in my thoughts and prayers. I really hope Bella gets better quickly.

| Thank you so so very much for your kind words. It helps just to know that you are thinking about us. I just do not know what to expect with surgery and how long it will take my little angel to heal, etc. Thank you again for your sweet thoughts.

| So I guess that we are going to go to talk to a doctor on Wed. and get his advice. It appears that the laser that breaks up the stones is not used very much, so we will just have to see what the doctor says about that. I spoke to a friend of mine in vet school, and she said that it takes about 2 weeks for them to heal until they are completely back to normal. Right now my angel is just sleeping so that is good. I will give an update soon if I hear or find out anything else.

| Sending well wishes for Bella. Here is a thread about Capt Noonie's foster girl who had huge bladder stones removed: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...e-katie-4.html Priscilla (the Capt) would be a great person to private message and ask about her experience.

| Hi everyone, thank you all for your posts. She appears to be urinating normally now. It is a stream, so I believe that is good. I called my vet and spoke to her about the surgery and x-rays etc. I seems that surgery is the best option. She said that it is a surgery they do all the time and that it is similar to getting spayed. She also said that in 3 days she will be feeling much much better. At the time I took her to the vet, she had nothing in her bladder so they were unable to do a urine sample. They gave her medicine for the UTI, two types, to cover any type of UTI she had. I guess the reason surgery was not done right away is that is was not blocking the urine flow. Since she has been urinating in a stream I assume that means it is not blocking yet, and surgery is not yet immediately necessary. She has a few more days of meds and she still is on her rx wet dog food. I am going to PM Priscilla now to ask about the recovery. That is what I am most worried about at this point because of me going out of town. I know my baby will want me there and I want to be there to take care of her. But at the same time I am nervous to wait and have the stone get stuck and then her need immediate surgery when I am gone. I am pretty torn with what to do for her. I am wondering if I could take her with me? Would the airplane upset the stone situation if I did not have surgery for her right away? Or would it be ok to travel with her if she did have surgery tomorrow (Wed.) and we left on Friday.

I have no experience with flying with a pet, but I'd think that probably wouldn't be good to put her under that stress right now. The biggest part about recovery is that there can be a bit of incontinence sometimes. The incision itself is usually pretty small. She'll recover much faster too if your vet will be using a laser vs. a scalpal, but either way your vet is right, it's not a big invasive surgery, she should be just fine

| I know how much you love your little girl and that you will do everything you can to make sure that she gets better. I can still remember how moved I was when you described your relationship with Bella when you wrote me about her several months ago. Please keep us posted about her, and I pray that all goes well for both of you.

| Hi everyone! I wanted to give an update on Bella and what I decided to do. I decided to schedule the surgery for this morning. I dropped her off at the vet at 9am so Bella is at the vet now having the surgery done . The vet told me that I could fly with her after the surgery so I have decided to take her with me for the weekend. I do have my sister who could watch her at home and give her the medicines, but I would feel more comfortable if she was with me and I think she would prefer to be with me also, lol. Please pray for my baby as she is in surgery today. I just hate putting these little ones under! My nerves are going crazy but I am just trying to stay calm. I cannot wait for them to call me. They are supposed to call me between 3 and 6pm to pick her up. Hopefully, she does not need to stay the night. Any advice on what I will need to know or what I should expect after the surgery? I imagine I will just give her the medicine they give me and be very gentle with her. I wonder how often she will want to go out to go the bathroom after the surgery. I remember reading that for 1-2 days after the surgery she will have blood in her pee, so I will try to stay calm when I see that. Is there any other complication or issue I should expect or be on the look out for? I will have the number to a vet in San Antonio, Texas- since that is where we are flying into- just in case something goes wrong during the flight and I need to go to a vet immediately. Thanks again for all your thoughts and prayers! I will give another update soon!

| Ok, sooo I just received a very very strange phone call from the vet- they said they did 2 x-rays and that they cannot see a stone?!?!?! She said that about 90% of stones show up on an x-ray and about 10% you cannot see or are too small to see. She said that she doesn't see any reason to open her up for surgery right now. She said she is going to do a urine sample to see if there is any blood or crystals in her urine, but other than that my only option is to do an ultrasound, which will cost about $325!!!!! I am just so confused?!? The other vet saw the stone with the ultrasound.....is it possible she passed it????? I really do not know what to take from this right now......

| I'm glad that Bella didn't need the surgery. I'm sure you will take good care of her and watch her carefully. Just love her like you usually do. I don't have any experience with this with my babies, but my husband had several bouts of kidney stones many years ago, and although he was unable to pass them without having lithotrypsies, many people do. I don't know if it's the same with our babies. I'm hoping it's the end of Bella's health problems. Enjoy your trip.

| Hello Joy and Bella. My yorkie, Pasha had a calcium oxolate stone removed back in Feb. He had surgery but continued to strain to pee. To make a ver long story short, he was sensitive to the sutures inside the bladder, which gave him more of an infection and a grauloma--very rare, but something to ask your vet about. He had to have a second surgery to remove the stitches and they also took out half of the granuloma in his bladder. The granuloma is now taking up about one quarter of his bladder, therefore he has to constantly pee. They say that the granuloma should go away on it's own. After his surgeries he did have one blood stained pee. He acted normal in every other way. He has been on clavomox and is now on metcam and he will have to be on potassium citrate for the rest of his life to prevent another stone. He is also on royal canin SO food. For us it has been a long hard road that is not yet over. Ask the vet about the potassim citrate. I think it depends on what kind of stone it is. Bella will surely do fine as most dogs do, but after surgery get ready for plenty of potty mistakes and perhaps straining. Maybe even have some doggie diapers on hand if Bella sleeps with you. A healing bladder sometimes does not have the control it needs right after surgery. Pasha still wears one at night and after this second surgery the diaper is usually wet. Poor Pasha he does'nt know what's going on. My prayers go to you and Bella and if you ever have any other questions about the surgery or post op problems, just ask me. After three months of dealing with stones, exrays, ultrasounds and urine cultures, I have become almost an expert. My best to you. |
